Breebaart Slijterij (Beer Store)
NECKERDIJK 5A
“Small typical Dutch slijteij in the centre of Purmerend near the canal. Ample choice, besides the usual suspect nice choice of local and regional North-Holland beers and a few interesting outsiders. Very good service by the friendly and knowledgable owner.“

“Finished here after trying Aad de Wolf and Bakker on the same square. A really nice combination for a quiet sunny Sunday afternoon. Bonte Koe like the other bars around has a nice terrace on the square, though distinguished by super comfy covered seats. The bar itself is a nice brown café style and looks like a nice place to be on cooler days. The tap selection is mostly local focussed is a couple of Belgians and the fairly extensive bottle selection is fairly Belgian and Dutch focussed with a few US represented. An above average list for an ABT bar. There’s even a barrel aged seperate menu though the prices were pretty high so I didn’t take any from there. A nice place with friendly and helpful service. Worth a visit for sure if you’re in the area.“

“A smaller place on the Koemarkt square with a pleasant terrace where I spent my time here on a sunny day. The tap selection was a pleasant surprise with four rotating specials which offered up two new entries on Ratebeer! Service was very friendly and helpful and definitely knew what they were selling. Nice little bar!“

“Located amongst a bunch of bars on Koemarkt near the cow statues at the end. As with all of the bars around here it’s nice to sit on the terrace looking over a quiet and pretty square. The bar inside is more brown café style but on a lovely sunny afternoon I didn’t linger there. There’s not a bad selection of Dutch bottles available, with a fair few Snab beers. Nothing too crazy but certainly better than the average bar. Service was friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about what they had.“

“Small bottle shop in a rather non-descript shopping mall. Has a decent selection of small regional and other Dutch breweres, and a nice selection of foreign brands. Very friendly service.“

“There is a good reason why this place has been in the Top 10 of bars in Holland since the beginning of time. Everything you expect from a local, special beer events and very knowledgeable staff. A beer of the month and and endless list of bottled and draft beers (as well as whiskies and wines). I noticed some of the regulars even have their own glasses and their favourite beer is kept at a preferred temperature. Never seen this anywhere before!“

We visited De Bonte Koe on Friday 30th September 2016, this was our last beer stop of the day before finishing our cycle ride back to Edam. De Bonte Koe is located in the Koemarkt near the other cafés listed on this site, the Koemarkt is on the south eastern edge of the centre of town at about 4 ’o’ clock if considered the centre as clock face.

Its an attractive bar, red brick, traditional Dutch looking, with an outside seating area covered by a large awning. I also believe that this is one of the ABT bars in the Netherlands so you can be assured of a good choice and that the beer will be well kept. Inside the bar is immediately ahead located on the LH wall, there is seating off to the RH side and to the rear. The rear had lots of glass fronted wooden cabinets which had bottles and other nic-naks in, from where we sat this area has the appearance of an old pharmacy. Lots of wood and a nice soft lighting in here made this a very nice cosy place to sit. The music playing in the background amused me a little as did the landlord who happily sang quietly along to those tracks he knew. So a typical blast from the past selection with Alphaville ’Big in Japan’, Foreigner ’Your as Cold as Ice’, Phil Collins ’Against all Odds’, Cock Robin ’Remember the Promise you Made’, sad to say I got them all without any shazam assistance.

We’d noticed a large marquee immediately outside the café on the Koemarkt and as we sat here inside we saw many of the staff getting changed into traditional Bavarian costume of Leiderhosen and Drindl, then customers were coming in all kitted out similarly. We spoke to the landlady who said it was their annual October Fest this weekend starting at 18:00 tonight, you paid €75 each for an evening of entertainment (oompah band etc), food and beer as much as you can drink (about thirty October Fest beers to choose from I believe) . It looked great fun I must say and we vowed to go along next year.

We must have had 3-4 rounds of beers here as we watched proceedings for the October Fest’, amongst the beers we enjoyed were Mashing Pumpkins, Lagunitas IPA, Thornbridge Squatters Ale, Arthurs Legacy 05 Jack the RIPA. We loved this bar, we’d been meaning to come here for a few years now when staying at the campsite in Landsmeer. This place had a great atmosphere and was a great find, staff were exceptionally friendly and professional and knew their stuff.

We visited here after a pretty long cycle ride, we were shattered and deserved a beer. This place like a couple of the other bars in town are all conveniently situated together on Koemarkt which is at the south eastern edge of the centre of town. This sits almost opposite De Boente Koe.

It being a lovely day we elected to sit outside in the sunshine, in fact everyone else was taking the opportunity to today with no one inside at all. I only nipped inside to use the facilities so cannot really provide a detailed description, suffice to say the bar is centrally placed and this is a big café with lots of seating off to the right and left. There were some large blown up old photos of what the Koe (cow) market looked like earlier in the twentieth century on the way to the toilets which are on the LH side of the pub. It looked mostly dark wooden floors, furnishings etc and was a nice looking café.

The chap who served us was really helpful, instantly knowing from the list what was/wasn’t available and was just a genuinely friendly, happy person in his role. As others have mentioned there is a good choice of SNAB beers but the beer choice on the whole I found to be pretty good. We liked it here and were it not for De Boente Koe opposite we’d have likely stayed here for another.

We visited this XL Albert Heijn on Friday 30th September 2016, we were heading back to Edam and needed to get something for tea en route after a 30+ mile cycle trip. This is located about a kilometre or so from town on the east side. It’s one of those places with a few other stores inside such as a Gall and Gall.

The beers are located at the rear of the store far left, and occupy a corner here. Ok so there was plenty of your usual multi nationals, however I was surprised to see Oedipus, De Molen, Jopen and not all the core range, we picked up a few bottles from here and as you might expect the prices were very decent. I wouldn’t go out of my way to go beer shopping here but if grocery shopping, it’s worth checking out what they have, I think it was perhaps a little better than the Gall and Gall in the same complex.

I think this is another slightly better than your average Gall and Gall, hence reason for adding it. We visited it on Friday 30th September 2016, it’s within the large Albert Heijn XL complex which is about a kilometre or so to the east of the town centre.

As you enter the store the beer selection can be found on the far wall at the rear, the usual Belgian suspects could be found but also a decent if unspectacular Dutch range of beers were also available and the odd Flying Dog beer as well. I saw quite a few Jopen and De Prael and there was seasonal Bok choice just in front of this area with 6-8 Bok beers. Not a place to go out of your way for but if shopping next door (like we were) it’s worth popping in, though on this occasion I think that the range in Albert Heijn might have been better.

“Visited during their small beer fest. Large double room bar, with a decent but not very outspoken tap and bottle list. Lots of wood, typical Dutch brown café, beer ornaments etc. Friendly staff.“

“Fairly average place, reasonable selection of local beer, but nothing terribly exciting.“

“Pretty varied and decent selection, stuck in the middle of a small mall in a residential area. Good selection of Dutch micros, usual Belgian suspects and a few interesting imports.“

“Visited on a Saturday evening, before dinner time. Reasonably spaceous bar, typical Dutch brown café/beer café interior with lots of beer memorabilia, stone jugs, ornaments. Looks nice. Very soft music if any at all. Good service, decent bottle list with mostly the usual suspects, tap list is OK but prices were a bit steep for rural Holland if you ask me, all between €3.50-4.-, even for something like De Koninck. Would visit more often if I lived nearby though.“

“Another interesting place in Purmerend. This pub is well known for its cosy, open atmosphere, but has an interesting beer list too, extended over the years. A lot of evergreens, but a decent selection of local brews from SNAB too. Some staff members know a lot about beer, others seem not so interested.“

“Another good beer location in Purmerend. Proeflokaal Bakker has a nice selection of international classics and regional brews (Jopen, Beemster, SNAB). Staff is open and interested. Their beerlist is not as exhaustive as Bontekoe’s, but intersting enough to make this pub a mustvisit if you are in Purmerend.“

“Great beerpub in Purmerend. The taplist is rather easy, but the bottled selection is very interesting. They have extra bottles if you ask for it. Staff is nice and interested. One of the best beer pubs in North Holland "boven het IJ" (so outside the Amsterdam/Haarlem area).“
