“Not really a beer destination - it has mainly bog standards on keg and Greene King on cask plus a few bottles - but a pleasant enough place inside and out on the patio. The steak menu is quite good.“

“Visited this pub a few times in the last.. Cosy modern style pub. Lots of seatings, modern stykke. Friendly service. Not the biggest selection of beers, beers served in good condition. They do nice pubfood with a twist. For sure worth a visit being in the area and having the time..“

“Our local cinema. Small and intimate. Run by volunteers as a social enterprise. You can have a Moncada beer - they stock the full range - or a couple of Brewdog s or Meantime while you wait. Or during the film. What’s not to like. Not a beer destination obviously.“

“Visited on the way to Chriso and Ruth’s pre GBBF bash on 7th August 2016 and a couple of minutes down road from Kensal Rise station this is a nice, bright airy bottle shop. Beers are to the left as you walk in and there’s a good list of local London beers plus a few more exotic beers in can and bottle. Shelves were well stocked and picked up a new beer here from To Ol. Service friendly, prices decent enough. A decent little stop off.“

64 /100 30 STATION TERRACE, KENSAL RISE

We visited here on Friday 20th May 2016 en route to Moncada. We’ve stopped around here on Peploe road in Frank (camper) on many occasions but not walked past this place when it’s been open. It is situated at the bottom end of a row of shops and where Station Terrace peels off of Chamberlayne Road, Kensal Rise Overground station is at the top of this row of shops just past Arthurs Café which I guess you would describe as an excellent greasy spoon.

Tables outside and inside I guess means that you can drink on site, a few chaps were sat inside. I can’t say as I blame them as ongoing roadworks meant a constant stream of buses were queueing up just outside and unless you are into collecting bus numbers or carbon monoxide fumes I can’t see the appeal of an outside seat.

Inside it is quite a nice place (to be fair it looks quite posh from the outside also) then beers are on shelves on the LH side with wine on the RH side just past the centrally located till/payment area. The beer range concentrated mainly on London micros, Five Points, 40Ft, Kernel, Gypsy Hill and Pressure Drop, were amongst the offerings. Prices seemed ok, I picked up a 40ft Pale and a Hitachino Nest Coffee Porter/Stout. There were two good sized well stocked fridges either side of the store. Service was ok, they were reasonably friendly, though did take an eternity to serve the one chap his one bottle of wine before we got served, by which time a queue was forming behind us. I liked it, Loz did also however did use pretentious when describing it later as we walked on to Moncada.

Alice House (Restaurant)
53-55 SALUSBURY ROAD

We visited Alice House Thursday 24th March 2016 (Easter w/e). The we being me, Loz, Lynn and Barry. We came here after a curry and also because our intended beery stop (Moncada Tap) was rather disappointingly closed tonight.

It is easy to find as it is located on the corner of Salusbury and Brondesbury roads and is a 1 minute walk from Queens Park tube station which is just past a few shops on the other side of the road.

The beer choice isn’t large but it is fine amongst the tap offerings when we arrived was Thornbridge Sequoia, Barry had a pint of this, I had Fourpure Beartooth, Loz and Lynn had a glass of Malbec each (not a small glass) and this was £25 so it ain’t cheap, our next round was similar in terms of choices though Loz and Lynn had Merlot or Shiraz this time and it was £23.

It is a popular place, the music was quite loud but not too intrusive, but the selection was good, reading Ruths review below I didn’t notice a DJ but there could have been one. We sat upstairs in a small raised section overlooking the entrance. Decor seemed quite modern, staff friendly, service pretty quick. I didn’t have a walk around and it was quite subdued lighting so other than lots of glass on the exterior I cannot really describe it too well, but even allowing for the prices we quite enjoyed it here.

“Wineshop located a few hundred meters from Queens Park underground. A few beer shelves can be found, and selection is good. Good enough but there are better places if you wanna get a lot of local beers in London.“

“Quite nice beer shop close to Kensal Rise. Focus on english micros with mostly London-based brews. Kernel, Pressure Drop and Beavertown among the beers on the shelves. Small area with possibility to sit down and enjoy your beers. Decent prices and all the service you need. Second best in the area, after Schnoodlepip...“

“The Masons Arms is almost opposite Kensal Green station, sandwiched between Harrow Road and the wonderfully Gothic Kensal Green cemetery. Many years ago, when Kensal Green was my tube stop, it was a pub to be avoided but all that’s changed and it’s no longer the dump it once was. It’s been nicely refurbished in a traditional yet modern style and it’s light, airy and pleasant. There’s one large open plan room downstairs with fish wallpaper, a function room upstairs with parakeet wallpaper, a small patio and a balcony. There’s not much for the beer connoisseur in this area - the Union Tavern at Westbourne Grove is the closest “beer destination” - but the Masons has four hand pumps and around eight keg taps, some with local beers (for example Portobello, Windsor and Eton and Camden). (Visited 2 October 2015).“

“The Lexi Cinema isn’t a beer destination by any stretch of the imagination but it’s a lovely little cinema run as a social enterprise and it has a bar which is open to the general public. It’s entered through a side passage used for small art exhibitions. They promote locally brewed Moncada beers and also have a few other bottles of beer and cider. (Last visited 28 May 2017).“

“Decent little wine shop with a modest selection of beer. There were roughly 30 beers on offer. Most of the beer came from small local producers (Kernel, Fourpure, 40ft, Pressure Drop). There was also some BrewDog stuff sprinkled in. A growler filling station had been set up, but was not in use. Prices were a touch dear, service was profoundly disinterested. Overall, an OK local place. Certainly not worth a detour.“

“Visited around 5pm on Saturday 04/04/15. Located at the end of the terrace of shops by Kensal Rise station, Borough Wines carries a good selection of London micros. Around 7 or 8 Kernel, Beavertown, Pressure Drop and Partizan also well represented allied to a few others. Service was good with someone inside the store to greet and take questions. No must visit by any means but if you’re in the area worth popping in for some solid London brews.“

“We visited here on Friday 6th March 2015, we nipped in here first before going for a beer next door. This is another place that is situated close to Queens Park tube. It is a smallish Deli’ with wines and spirits down one side and fridges with cheese and also fridges with beer on the other/RH side most of the beers are close to the counter. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by this place, I wasn’t expecting an awful lot of beers and whilst there wasn’t a large selection what there was, was very well chosen. Most of the choice was London micros which was great, but even bottles of Mikkeller Invasion were to be found in the fridge, admittedly not a cheap beer but it is excellent. I picked up a Beaver Heavy Water the Cherry & Sea Salt version and at £4.50 I thought that was quite reasonable, Loz picked up some cheese for us to take to Siren for the following day. The chap who served us seemed pleasant and helpful, I have to say as this is so close to our London residence on Peploe Rd, we will be visiting here again.“

“We visited here on Friday 6th March 2015, it is very close to Caldo and couple of other places on here. We only nipped in for a swift half so didn’t really get a very good look. However it is quite a dark place, not helped by large heavy curtains these were seemingly sectioning areas off. It was popular in fact very busy with no free tables. We stood at the bar, and having chosen what turned out to be a very well kept and superb Moncada Ruby prior to getting this beer we waited and watched, it would have been amusing if it weren’t so annoying because the staff appeared to have excelled in their ignoring, scowling and surliness classes. We didn’t hang about as we didn’t really feel welcome. Beer choice was predominantly from the GK range with specials and one tap as already indicated had Moncada. Ok.“

Caldo (Restaurant)
79 SALUSBURY ROAD
“We visited here on Friday 6th March 2015, this following a recommendation from Chris and Ruth, and a very good recommendation as it happens. Firstly whilst this place clearly sells beer it isn’t ’go to’ beery venue, but it is a great tapas bar/café where you can also get a pint of local beer, Redemption Hotspur on tap or some of the more usual Spanish suspects, it was happy hour and we settled for a cold, fizzy pint of the latter. It was really busy when we arrived with a good mixed crowd of after work types, couples and friends. It is narrow with the bar near the front on the RH side and tables on the LH side and to the rear of the bar leading onto a further connected room (where we sat) at the rear. The decor was interesting and to some if they recognised what it was it might seem a tad macabre or plain weird, the wall had a wallpaper design (it must be custom made) of images of tombs but just the front and looking old with peeling paint and facia, Spanish tombs are often stacked above ground on top of each other with just a square door showing, which is what this repeated design showed, all very gothic. The food was excellent we had 3 tapas each, mini Paella, Duck with Beans and the Spanish Black Pudding, Patatas Bravas etc, all very, very good. The staff were really smiley and friendly and happy to explain the menu. I liked it here, thanks to Chris and Ruth for recommending this place.“

“The Salusbury pub has been long established as a trendy gastropub - scrubbed pine tables and clean lines - and has always served good food. The beer selection now seems to be improving a lot and they have ten keg beers, five hand pumps and a selection of around 15 bottles, many of them from small London breweries. The cask beers include rotating taps and Moncada Amber, which has recently become a regular. (Last visited 26 August 2014).

Update, April 2017: Unfortunately the Salusbury has been going downhill for a while now. The Moncada has disappeared, leaving just Greene King IPA (not great at the best of times but in poor condition the last couple of times I visited) and a few nondescript kegs. (Last visited 10 April 2017).“

Caldo (Restaurant)

“Caldo is a small restaurant (formerly Penk’s) serving very good tapas. It’s certainly not a beer destination but it has three keg taps and three hand pumps. The cask taps seem to be used only sporadically but when they are in use they usually have beer from local craft breweries. When we last visited they had Redemption Hopspur on cask and Estrella and Meantime London Lager on keg. (Last visited 16 July 2015).“

“A nice restaurant and bar serving very good food. There are five beers available on tap plus some bottles - most of them from small local breweries, with no macros in sight - and a cider. The decor is very attractive and the service was excellent. The waitress told us that they were expected to memorise the bottle list as it changes regularly and they had received "beer training" from Logan at Beavertown. All very positive. The only downside is that for some inexplicable reason they have a DJ playing very loud music on weekend evenings. (Visited 22 August 2014).“

“A fun and chic place in a central location. Service was great, beer was local but not really inspired on tap. In bottles they carry the better locals, but prices are a bit on the high side. Food is very good. A great date place.“

“Borough Wines and Beers has recently opened in Kensal Rise and already seems to be thriving. It’s quite spacious and the staff are enthusiastic and friendly. The shelves and fridges on the left hand side are dedicated to beer and there’s a very good range, with many of the best breweries in London and the south east well represented. After living in a beer desert for so long, things just keep looking up and up round here! First we had the Salusbury Winestore with its small but excellent beer selection and now, with Borough Wines and Beers, we have a shop on either side of the park. All we need now is a good pub or two and the picture will be complete. (Last visited 19 October 2014).“

Salusbury Winestore (Beer Store)

“Solid little shop. Mostly a wine store, and the beer range isn’t massive, but they do get some really nice beers, including one-off specials from Beavertown. There is a good range of other London breweries, too. Service is good, prices are average. There aren’t many beer shops in this part of town, so if you happen to be in the area this is your best bet.“

“Visited quickly after work. Quite a nice little shop, mostly wine plus some cheese/meats plus a selection of maybe 40-50 beers mostly from modern craft brewers. Pretty good selection, you can certainly find something here worth drinking and prices not ridiculous.“

Salusbury Winestore (Beer Store)
54 SALUSBURY ROAD
“The Salusbury Winestore is wedged between the pub and the food store / café of the same name. It’s quite small but packs in a lot of delectable high quality goodies. The main focus is on wine, beer and whiskies but it also sells cheeses and meats. The beer shelves and fridges are at the back, opposite the counter, and I was delighted to find a really good selection – not least because the shop is only a few minutes walk from where I live and this area has traditionally been a bit of a beer desert. They have perhaps fifty or more bottles, mainly from small craft breweries including the Kernel, Camden Town, London Fields, Bristol Beer Factory, Redwillow, Oakham and a host of others. The service is very good and the prices, surprisingly, are very reasonable. (Last visited 7 September 2014).“
