44 /100 101 OAKWOOD LOOP A conveniently located brewpub situated to snag the tourists on their way to and from Wimberly. 15 house beers on tap, no guests on. An unhappy, unsmiling little man named Hennigan cut me off at two micro-samples. He seemed annoyed at my questions regarding inconsistencies in the database and what they currently offered. Pushed me to buy a taster of 5 four-ounce pours instead of helping me out with another sample or two (out of 15 beers I’d never seen or heard of). I don’t rate individual beers any more, didn’t see a need to hope I got something decent and declined, simply wanting to enjoy a full pour or two with my girlfriend. I settled for the dubbel which was fairly pedestrian. My girlfriend had the tripel which was lightly phenolic and boozy. Watching several employees run around shooting flies inside the brewpub, with the Bug-a-salt was entertaining. Decent beer in the middle of nowhere. Not really a destination. |
100 /100 The Taproom Pub & Grub (Bar) 129 E HOPKINS ST STE 120 My favorite place. College would not have been the same without Travis & his crew. Cheers! |
76 /100 101 OAKWOOD LOOP Nice little brewery in San Marcos. Dog friendly inside and out. Good beer selection, quick service and nice indoor / outdoor seating. Only complaint was there was dog crap everywhere on the patio. Not the brewery’s fault that dog owners aren’t cleaning up after the pets, but detracted from the atmosphere outside. One poop was in the middle of the bag toss area. |
72 /100 H-E-B - San Marcos (Grocery Store) 641 E. HOPKINS ST. Visited here in early June ’15 on my way from Austin to the San Antonio area during a business trip. Was familiar with H.E.B. during my time in Austin several years ago but was amazed at the progress they have made in the area of craft beer. They have a growler station fulli of local beers, beers by the cup for shopping and a n extremely large selection of local, regional and craft beer. They have a whole section of mix your own singles of mainly local stuff which is what I was interested in only being in the are for a few days. Was able to ad a few Texas ticks to my ratings. Probably all H.E.B.s are this way these days, but this out of towner was impressed. |

This is one of two breweries discovered on the untapped map. I really should start comparing the place listing with the brewer listing here. I regularly find breweries with no place added or like in this case the brewery and place weren’t linked. In any event this is on the highway that runs through the country side from Jester King on down to San Antonio. It’s right on the main road so it’s an easy stop. Kind of a neat setup. They have a castle-looking building with a large metal sign outside. Inside is a pretty looking brew setup and a nice tasting room. To be honest I don’t remember if they sell food or not but I don’t remember seeing a menu. Lots of people there just before closing time on a Sunday night. They have some house beers on tap and some guest beers in the bottle. Kind of a smart idea I suppose. Most of the guest beers in bottles were Belgian. I saw some Westmalle, Rochefort, Orval, and Lindemans. On tap they split the house beers between Belgian style, American style, and English style. In the English column they only had an ESB and a porter. The American column had 2 IPAs, a pale, and a red. The Belgian column contained a bunch of stuff including a tripel and a saison. The IPAs were alright and the saison was my favorite. It’s a decent pit stop if you’re taking the scenic route from Austin to San Antonio. |
56 /100 The Root Cellar Cafe (Restaurant) 215 N LBJ Small place basically in the center of this university town. Looks like the whole town center is being renovated, or at least all the roads are being repaved. Access was easy enough, and street parking abundant. Food was tasty enough although a bit greasy. Good prices. Small selection of interesting beers from near and far. It’ll do. |
86 /100 101 OAKWOOD LOOP Wow, what a great place. Well worth the ten minute drive from 35. Beers were delicious, and there were tons of guest taps and bottles. Serbice was exceptionally friendly. Nice porch, plus an indoor area. They are expanding into a new space soon, and planning releases of some of their bottled sours. A must-stop while anywhere near Austin. |
72 /100 The Taproom Pub & Grub (Bar) 129 E HOPKINS ST STE 120 Good service at the bar. Knowledgeable bartender, helpful and friendly.
Selection was good on draft brews, but would have liked to see more local brews.
The Firestone selection was nice though!
Will try the food next visit. |
60 /100 The Root Cellar Cafe (Restaurant) 215 N LBJ Visited October 2011.
Stopped in on the way from San Antonio to Austin to try some of the Dark Side Fermentation beers. I had emailed the brewer ahead of time to ask if he could sell me some of the quad that he only does occasionally and he said he didn’t have any for sale but he’d get me one from his personal stash. Unfortunately traffic sucked and he had left already but the bottle was there as promised. Other than that there were some bottles of a tripel with some herbs in it available for sale. There was a single Dark Side beer on tap, which was kind of disappointing. Maybe he can’t make enough beer, I don’t know. Didn’t try the food. Prices on the bottles were a bit high but the tap was reasonable. The glasses were cool but not for sale unfortunately. |
72 /100 Gabriel’s Liquor (Beer Store) 4200 IH-35 Best beer supply in the San Marcos area. |
88 /100 Sean Patrick’s Irish Pub (Bar) 202 EAST SAN ANTONIO ST. STE 119 Nice location in San Marcus near the square. Indoor and outdoor seating. Nice selection of beers at reasonable prices - on tap and in bottles. Extensive food selection. Worth a visit! |
88 /100 The Taproom Pub & Grub (Bar) 129 E HOPKINS ST STE 120 Good selection. Great service. Good specials. Good burgers. |
36 /100 The Yellow Store (Beer Store) 301 EAST HOPKINS A small, run-down looking gas station with a decent craft beer selection. Disappointingly, it’s all pretty much the standard stuff, and there’s nothing local. Oh well, it was the cheapest gas I’ve seen anywhere lately. |
38 /100 The Root Cellar Cafe (Restaurant) 215 N LBJ Apparently the Darkside brewmaster is gone...Bummer. They had two house beers on tap and no bottles to sell, even though the menu and website still advertise the Darkside stuff. Oh well, the Santa Fe Stout wasn’t bad, and the appetizers weren’t either. |
68 /100 The Taproom Pub & Grub (Bar) 129 E HOPKINS ST STE 120 Cool place, and plenty of taps and bottles, but nothing local, and nothing that I can’t get any day at Specs. Still, staying in San Marcos with no time to make the trip to Austin, this was the best around. |
64 /100 The Taproom Pub & Grub (Bar) 129 E HOPKINS ST STE 120 Comfortable place. Easy to miss since it’s actually in the alley behind Harper’s Public House. Respectable tap list, but not many local offerings, which I was a bit let down by. Kind service and decent pub fare to boot. |
50 /100 The Yellow Store (Beer Store) 301 EAST HOPKINS Odd store. It’s basically a standard (at least for Texas) drive-thru liquor store that surprisingly stocks items like Avery Mephistopheles and Big Eddy. Respectable. |
60 /100 The Root Cellar Cafe (Restaurant) 215 N LBJ pretty snug little place .. 1 house beer on tap ... small but tasty breakfast menu (stopped on the way to a Freetail bottle release) .. polite friendly staff .. just a small cozy restaurant that happens to have a beer or two (usually have a bottle or two for sale also) .. . BUT with the brewmaster just leaving, who knows whats gonna happen with the future of brewing here.. |
90 /100 101 OAKWOOD LOOP This a great place to drink really good beer brewed by someone who loves what they are doing and is very knowable about beers in general. If you like a variety of handcrafted beers and especially Belgian style brews this the place to go. |
92 /100 101 OAKWOOD LOOP Both a nano-brewery/taproom and a home brew shop... this place is small and cozy in a neat place outside of town. They have no food (other than peanuts and sometimes cheese) but there is a wonder pizza place and a Mexican food place in the same parking lot. (The pizza place is ALSO a brewpub, so you can try out two sets of beer in one stop.)
Kim and Dennis (the owners) are great people and they know a lot about beer. They recently moved from San Diego and Belgium-style beers are the specialty here.
A local home brew club also meets here. (The Hill Country Worthogs) |
90 /100 The Taproom Pub & Grub (Bar) 129 E HOPKINS ST STE 120 Great selection (for Texas), a lot of cool stuff ON TAP, not just in bottles. Unfortunately they tend to run out of a lot, so think of 2-3 beers you’d like to have. Creative beer blends, awesome food (try the hot wings and homemade burgers). Lots of TVs, reasonably loud music. |
82 /100 101 OAKWOOD LOOP A combination nano-brewery and homebrew shop located in Wimberley right next to Wimberley brewing.
The place is run by a husband and wife team that recently moved to the state from San Antonio. Downstairs is a small six seat bar, while upstairs is a homebrew shop. I believe a local homebrew club also meets here. The man and woman who run the place were very friendly and seemed very interested in other Texas breweries.
When I went, there were five beers on tap (they typically have six but one keg had just blown) and there was also another beer available in bottles. The beer was pretty good and they are planning on doing experimental beers such as sours in the future. The food appeared to be a cheese plate and peanuts, so eat before you come. Outside of the bottles, the owner said they were not allowed to fill growlers. Not sure of the reason, but they said they are trying to rectify the situation.
Definitely a place that shows some potential. |
84 /100 101 OAKWOOD LOOP Half sort of nano small brewpub and half homebrew shop. A few of their own taps and some guest taps. Only a cheese plate for snacks. A real small but nice place. Husband and wife owned and operated. Very good and nice service. Very knowledge on good beer. |
60 /100 The Yellow Store (Beer Store) 301 EAST HOPKINS This place has the best selection of brews in San Marcos. That having been said, it is still limited compared to big city places, but it is great for what it is. When I lived in San Marcos I was there regularly. Prices were steep but I guess you can get away with it when no other places in town offer an impressive selection. |
60 /100 The Root Cellar Cafe (Restaurant) 215 N LBJ This place has been around for a while, but I just went back recently and saw they had started to brew, awesome! Food has always been very good and it still is, did not get a chance to try the brew however. Anyway, if you’re in San Marcos, this is a great place to try. |
74 /100 The Root Cellar Cafe (Restaurant) 215 N LBJ nice quiet place to grab an excellent meal and their beer. |
78 /100 The Root Cellar Cafe (Restaurant) 215 N LBJ Quaint little place...food was great and the beer was really good...sadly, they only had one of their beers on when we were there, but everyone was friendly and the service was great...I’ll be back. |
74 /100 The Root Cellar Cafe (Restaurant) 215 N LBJ Had a nice Saturday lunch here recently. Very good sandwiches and salads, reasonably priced. Beer selection was good, but not expansive. I had the Darkside Belgian, very good brew. Service was friendly and efficient. Neat old building it’s in, cool artwork and decor. I plan to return again. |
68 /100 The Root Cellar Cafe (Restaurant) 215 N LBJ Nice little semi-underground spot that’s currently brewing small-batch Texas Belgian-style beers. Met the owner/manager (Kyle) and he was extremely friendly. Took good care of us.
The food was also decent, and service from our server was acceptable. Nice Shepard’s Pie. There is beer to go in 750ml bottles from their brewed on premise beers or you can drink them at the restaurant as well. |
64 /100 The Root Cellar Cafe (Restaurant) 215 N LBJ Small cafe and gallery in downtown San Marcos that began brewing a couple months ago. Friendly and very helpful staff. They are currently brewing small 15 gallon batches and have a limited number of beers currently, but plan to triple production soon. Beers are available in 750ml format to drink at the cafe or to take to go. |
100 /100 The Yellow Store (Beer Store) 301 EAST HOPKINS Best beer selection around. I love the fact I can make my own six pack or buy single beers, I have never found another beer store like it. The customer service is great. The gas customers are rude so avoid the mad rush of them just after work time. Local Businesses like this store should be appreciated. they have over 300 beers in stock and the selection ranges from local (austin) brewers to places from around the world, who would have thought a beer from the phillipines could be so good, (san miguel dark lager) I recommend this store to anyone looking for good beer and friendly staff who love their jobs. a rare combination indeed |
70 /100 The Yellow Store (Beer Store) 301 EAST HOPKINS If I lived in San Marcos I would probably buy my beer here as it has a good selection of beer for the town. The beers are a little pricey but you can tell the owner is trying to have a broad selection and probably switches it up. The owner is very passionate about beer & takes orders on cases. I thought they were very nice & had great service. Kind of a rockers place, not really a place I can see uptight snobby people going to. |
78 /100 The Yellow Store (Beer Store) 301 EAST HOPKINS Awesomely wonderful place. Very impressive selection for a gas station. Belgians, barleywines, double IPAs, even an occasional hard-to-find. The owner is a beer lover, so it’s a great experience. The service is great. They have an orphaned beer section and you can make your own six packs... I’d like to see any other gas station pull that off. They also do mystery six packs, brown-bagged mixes of 12oz bottles they put together. Friendly clientelle, as well as staff. I’m surprised I’ve gone this long without knowing about the store. It’s going to be one of my frequent stops from now on. |
100 /100 The Yellow Store (Beer Store) 301 EAST HOPKINS This store makes living in San Marcos possible. They gave me great advice on what good beer should taste like..and they were dead on. The staff tries hard to make every purchase a fun experience..I give them big props for dealing with all the fratty assholes who buy shitty beer and the hobo types who bring pennies in for 32oz beers all day. Super cheap gas,and great beers makes it worth the trip in to town. Stop in and support this store..the managers try really hard to make this place float and without them there would be no beer around. |
32 /100 The Yellow Store (Beer Store) 301 EAST HOPKINS I agree with saber. These guys have gone downhill since the fire. They are rude, indifferent to their customers (the source of their money, coincidentally), etc. I could go on! First of all, their parking situation flat out sucks! Then, the last time I was there, three weeks ago, there was a guy complaining that he had placed an order several times and left his number and stuff and never got called. Either through a remarkable coincidence that was saber, or it is happening to other people. By the way, their solution to this problem was for him to ask the same guy AGAIN, who hadn’t helped him yet. He DID ask if he could deal with someone else. They didn’t seem to give much of a damn about him. Just seeing that was the last straw for me, and I haven’t been back since. Avoid these been counters! There are new choices that weren’t around before the fire. |
26 /100 The Yellow Store (Beer Store) 301 EAST HOPKINS Since re-opening after the fire, the store looks great! Better than ever. It is clean, organized, and easy to get around. Unfortunately, the fire also destroyed their previously good level of customer service. It has been three months since re-opening, and after giving them my request on day one, and at least every other week since, as well as leaving my name and number at least four times, they called ONLY once (after I complained to a different person than the one I had been dealing with). They have made nothing but empty promises time and again. I found another retailer who has the beer in stock and has made a verbal contract with me to have a case a week for me to purchase. Shopping for beer should NEVER be this stressful or dissapointing! They’ve lost my business forever, and I will make sure everyone else knows about how little this new and improved store really views their loyal customers. |
100 /100 The Yellow Store (Beer Store) 301 EAST HOPKINS It’s a rock and roll beer store that almost looks like a gas station. There is more beer there than anywhere else in that part of Texas. Chances are, if you go in there and buy something sorry then the employees may very well let you know that your taste in beer sucks. It’s not the Burger King have it your way kind of store because there the customers are not always right and the employees let them know. Seasonals are always coming through there and the beer stock is always revolving from American Pale Ales to Russian Imperial Stouts it’s all there. The only thing I don’t like about the Yellow Store is that Budweiser and Miller obviously bribed the owners or something because there is a bunch of their artwork covering their walls. Anyway, they know their beer and it’s always worth the trip. |
88 /100 The Yellow Store (Beer Store) 301 EAST HOPKINS Best selection of anywhere between Austin or San Antonio. Staff is knowledgable, helpful, and passionate (at least about beer). Everything is pretty easy to find, and the store is always willing to special order kegs or packages that they don’t have in regular stock. Store is bright, too bright really, but the staff makes up for it by playng the best music in san marcos |
78 /100 The Yellow Store (Beer Store) 301 EAST HOPKINS Great selection of imports and micros. Carries a wide selection of seasonals and is stocked year round with your favorite brew. Also has good keg selection |
82 /100 The Taproom Pub & Grub (Bar) 129 E HOPKINS ST STE 120 Definitely the best place to get micros in San Marcos with around 30-40 micros on tap and a decent, but not huge, bottle selection of beers that are out of the norm. It can get busy, but I’ve always had good service and the selection always makes it worth it |
76 /100 The Taproom Pub & Grub (Bar) 129 E HOPKINS ST STE 120 By far the best place in san marcos for microbrews. Although it is a bit small and can get crowded, if you catch it in the down times you’ll have all the beer to yourself! Check it out. |
60 /100 The Taproom Pub & Grub (Bar) 129 E HOPKINS ST STE 120 Best place for good beer in San Marcos wthout a doubt. Nice selection, good prices, and some good specials. Every night has a theme, for instance Monday is German night, where said countries beers are discounted. Burgers are supposedly good, but I hav’nt tried them. Service is usually good, but it can get quite crowded and busy. As long as I’m stuck in San Marcos, I’ll be here quite a bit. |
