“New looking place in Sparta, probably the most modern building in the whole town. Wide open, customers are allowed to wander into their brewing area and look around. The bartender was also one of the brewers; he told us everything about their current, past and future beers. I'm not into the farmhouse style beers but they had a quad, a stout and a lager that were all very good. I can see this place really taking off in a year or two.“

“Conveniently located right across the street from the Sparta PD in an old grocery store. It looks like they are into making more barrel aged beers more than anything else but they do other styles as well. I had the hoppy pils and it was above par. They offer full 14oz pours and half pours along with samples to try before you make a selection. The prices were decent, I think my full pour cost $5. Their bottles are way overpriced. I’m sure barrel aged beers take a lot of time and effort but a single 375 ml bottle at $15 is a bit much. A decent place, if your heading to or from Scratch brewing down in Ava it would not hurt to stop in here.“

“Being a small town guy I have a soft spot in my heart for breweries in small towns. White Rooster is one such place. I stopped in on a Saturday afternoon to find a nice crowd, many of whom were watching the Blues playoff game on the projection TV. The building is new and is a variant on a pole barn, but it is nicer than that. A concrete floor and a tall open ceiling with exposed trusses. The roof is a kind of Quonset hut with a rounded top. They have a couple of 375 ml bottles for sale and I bought one of each for $15 per. I also had a couple of half pours of their beers and both were tasty. They have about 7 of their own beers on draft and I don’t think they offer any others. No food is prepared as this is a tasting room only and it has limited hours. They do a lot of barrel aging and the barrels are often previously used at least once by another brewer so their results should be interesting. They are gong to brew some sours and farmhouse kinds of beers as opposed to big whiskey barrel aged imperial stouts. But my guess is they will play a little. If Southern Illinois makes a brewery trail like they have made a wine trail this will be a nice stop on it. Driving from St. Louis to the south and east is becoming a nice beer drive.“
