72 /100 The Black Smith (Bar) HOGENDIJK 46 Neat little one room pub with a couple of outside tables. Belgian focus. Nothing crazy. Owner is really pleasant and knows his stuff. More for locals than the trendy places up the road. Worth a visit if in the area |
76 /100 Slijterij Wijnhandel Vonk (Beer Store) TUINIERSSTRAAT 8 Big bottleshop with a lot of drinks. Beer section in one room on the right back side of the shop. A lot of local (Noord Holland) breweries, quite some Belgian beers and a nice assortment of good quality foreign beers. Quite a few beers that I haven't seen elsewhere that much or not at all. Nice rack with 75 cl bottles, including vintage Oud Beersel Oude Geuze, Green Walnut and some 'normal' Cantillons. Free parking near the shop. Friendly staff. Decent prices. Watch the best before dates!Worth a visit. |
58 /100 Lab-44 (Restaurant) MIDDENWEG 44 I've added this place because it also serves as a brewing facility for Hoop and Breugem. That technically makes this a brewpub, but there is no beer brewed only here and not in the main facility afaik. Large restaurant on an old industrial site (Hembrugterrein) just outside Zaandam. Easy to reach by car or by bike from either Amsterdam or Zaandam. There's also a ferry from Amsterdam Central Station to Zaanse Schans that stops next to this place. Some ideas for a nice trip. Large patio on one side of the building, tables and chairs on the other side. Spacious building, modern, clean. Child-friendly, lots of room to play (also outside, no real traffic here). Beers on tap from Hoop and Breugem, as said, which are decent beers. Prices for food are a bit on the high side but still manageable. They serve some really nice sandwiches. Service is friendly but slow, no real beer knowledge here. I live in Zaandam, so I visit this place every now and then when the weather is nice, to sit outside on their lovely patio and enjoy my kids play there. Not a beer destination per sé. |
70 /100 The Black Smith (Bar) HOGENDIJK 46 Zaandam is an amazing place. It’s an old fishing village just a short hop from Amsterdam Centraal on the train and it’s recently been redeveloped and expanded. Leaving the station, you might be forgiven for thinking you’d stepped into a Disney film set. I also subsequently discovered that you can get there by ferry. The Blacksmith is tucked away close to the old part of town and the waterfront and it’s well worth visiting. There’s just one room, bright and airy but cosily decorated and furnished, with steep stairs up to the toilets on the first floor. The beer list is quite good, with an emphasis on Belgian bottles.

64 /100 The Black Smith (Bar) HOGENDIJK 46 Nice small old fashioned Bar, More bottle Lead that Tap, Nothing to blow one away but i nicely curated selection, so a safe choice in the area. |
76 /100 Slijterij Wijnhandel Vonk (Beer Store) TUINIERSSTRAAT 8 Slijterij with a large selection of beers from around the world. Very reasonable prices. Even a hardened ticker should find a few ticks here. |
66 /100 The Black Smith (Bar) HOGENDIJK 46 Nice small wooden place. Friendly service. 4 Dutch/Belgian taps. Mixture of Dutch and Belgian bottles with one or two Brew dog and German beers. Free WiFi |
76 /100 Slijterij Wijnhandel Vonk (Beer Store) TUINIERSSTRAAT 8 Very large place. When we walked in and saw lots of novelty wodka bottles but couldn’t find the beer I had very low hopes for this place... But then we found the ber and they did have a pretty nice selection! Very well presented in a dedicated room, modern interior/shelves and even a flatscreen showing information about breweries (small documentary on Cloudwater was playing.) Lots of quality beers here, with prices ranging from cheap (for lambics) to more Amsterdam-style prices. Friendly service. I didn’t have any more room in my bag otherwise I would have bought more here. Really good for a liquor store. |
72 /100 The Black Smith (Bar) HOGENDIJK 46 Small but nice looking bar, lots of wood but not the dark kind. I think they had four beers on tap and about 30 bottles. Friendly service, not-cheap-but-somewhat-reasonable prices and some harder to find beers as well. What I like here is that their standard pils in Budvar instead of Heineken or Amstel, that already shows they want to focus more on quality than commercialism. Overall they barely had any macro beers that you can find in any bar. Very nice place to visit when in the area. |
76 /100 Slijterij Wijnhandel Vonk (Beer Store) TUINIERSSTRAAT 8 This place was a pleasant surprise! There’s a great selection of beer in an area bigger than any beer store back in The Hague (home of the kermis). There’s a large selction of local beers with a bunch I’d never seen before, along with a solid choice of international beers (mainly European with a few US) and all at very reasonable prices. I’d challenge anyone to come here an not find an interesting tick (or a bag full!). Excellent store for such a small town. |
70 /100 The Black Smith (Bar) HOGENDIJK 46 Small but bright brown cafe, basically one square room with the bar on the side and a shabby worn interior. Very local feel but at the same time friendly and welcoming. Although there’s not a huge selection there were surprises on the beers, offering up a few ticks to a hardened group of 3 Ratebeerians. Nice atmosphere and overall a nice little beer if you find yourself in Zaandam. |
74 /100 Slijterij Wijnhandel Vonk (Beer Store) TUINIERSSTRAAT 8 Large no-nonsense liquor store. Nice collection of about 500 beers. Mostly Belgian and Dutch (including some regional micros), But also English, German, American, Spanish, Italian. Decent prices, service okay. |
74 /100 Slijterij Wijnhandel Vonk (Beer Store) TUINIERSSTRAAT 8 Large liqour store with a nice selection of beer. Although maybe not to special, for a southern man as i am there is plenty of choice of Amsterdam, Zaandam and other local stuff. |
80 /100 The Black Smith (Bar) HOGENDIJK 46 16Aug2015: Visited on a Friday night. Really nice, small, cozy Bruin Café style bar with high windows, high ceilings, very old and worn interior that adds to the atmosphere, a few tables and stools. Older clientele when I was there, but according to the (new) owner it was a slow night. Only 4 taps, but all quality stuff, house pils is Budvar. Nice selection of bottles, with the classic stuff for very decent prices (Orval €3.20, Rochefort 10 for €3.80), and the more modern beers between €4-5 (e.g. Kees!, Oersoep, Emelisse). Friendly owner, soft music in the background. I think I’ve found my new watering hole. Re-rate, 06Dec2015: prices for the classics mentioned before have gone up spectacularly, Orval now being €4.20, R10 being €5.40. Ugh... |
78 /100 Slijterij Wijnhandel Vonk (Beer Store) TUINIERSSTRAAT 8 Very large liquor store, relatively close to central Zaandam, and very close to my new home :-) The place is very well laid out, except for maybe the entrance, where it can be crowded because of the queue for the cash register. At first you have the gift pack section. Through the opening you enter the liquor and wine area, all beautifully laid out, a feast for the eyes. So many whiskies.. Major drool. To the right there is a niche for the beers. Nice, but not enormous selection of beers, lots of Belgians and Dutch, some other foreign stuff. Prices are decent. Will certainly visit more often. |
74 /100 Slijterij Wijnhandel Vonk (Beer Store) TUINIERSSTRAAT 8 Large liquorstore in Zaandam, close to my current job assignment, so pretty nice one to visit after I finish work. Enough parking space around the store. Selection is pretty large for a dutch liquorstore. Lots of dutch micro’s. Nice stuff from Italy, UK, Germany and Denmark. US selection is not big, mostly Rogue. Friendly staff. Visisted at a friday eob, pretty crowded. |
74 /100 Slijterij Wijnhandel Vonk (Beer Store) TUINIERSSTRAAT 8 Quite a large place with tons of drinks and a growing beer selection. Seems like a family business with their young son in charge of the beer department. Already a large selection of good Dutch brews/breweries and also some foreign stuff but at the moment mostly Belgian and Dutch stuff. Prices are pretty cheap, folks working there are very friendly and the selection is more than ok! Would absolutely go back when in the area! |
64 /100 Slijterij Wijnhandel Vonk (Beer Store) TUINIERSSTRAAT 8 Nice collection of beers, but some of the best Belgian ones are missing ... |
94 /100 Slijterij Wijnhandel Vonk (Beer Store) TUINIERSSTRAAT 8 Nice collection of beers. |
