We visited The Talbot, Saturday 31st December 2016, the we being me, Loz, Scott, Mandy, George, Oscar, Mum and Keith. We had intended going to the Walter De Cantaloupe across the road first but that place was closed both today and tomorrow. The Talbot is one of four pubs, in this large village, all are located on the main road which is the A38 Worcester to Upton road that runs through the village. This pub closer to the centre of Kempsey on the LH side of the road if you were heading in the direction of Worcester.

Like the Anchor this is a very large roadside pub with an equally huge car park, I’m guessing that all of these pubs in the village are semi reliant on folk coming out here from Worcester bringing the family and having something to eat. As you enter there was a dining area off to the LH side with a bar off to the RH side and facing the main road, we sat here. It was a little tired looking and in need of a refurb’, but comfy enough. It also had that large chain pub feel about it. This room continued around where it ended with a pool table at the far end, dirty plates around here probably from kids playing pool with plates of chips lent it a rather scruffy look.

The beer choice wasn’t great, there were three handpumps, but only two on today, both of these offering beer from the Banks/Marston stable so EPA and Banks bitter as I recall. To be fair the beer was in very good nick, I had the EPA, Loz turned up her nose at the poor choice and settled for a wine. The staff (mostly young girls) were fine and friendly enough as was the locals, a few local footballers sat on the adjacent table. It was ok in here, no great shakes, just ok. The Anchor is the better option.“

We visited here on Saturday 31st December 2016, the we being me, Loz, Scott, Mandy, George, Oscar, Mum and Keith. we walked here after The Talbot one of the other pubs, in this large village that sustains four pubs. The Anchor as with the other three pubs is located on the A38 which is the main Worcester to Upton road that runs through the village. This pub is on the south side of Kempsey on the LH side of the road if you were heading in the direction of Worcester.

Its quite a large pub with an equally large car park to the LH side of it, garden at rear and patio are also at the rear. There is a main lounge bar with a very small bar on the RH side as you look at the pub from the road. We were here early afternoon and it had a healthy amount of folk in here, the staff were really friendly as were the locals. I may have been here many years ago when living in Worcester as my brother and I used to survey pubs for the local CAMRA branch for the Good Beer Guide, if I did I can’t remember it, in fact I can only recall visiting the Walter De Cantaloupe in the village. As you enter the bar/lounge the bar is off to the RH side straight ahead, thinking about it, it’s actually quite a small bar. There are tables and seating scattered around, however a large pillar in the centre of the room obscures views of the room. I suspect the pillar de-marks the original layout of the pub with where we were sat being a sizeable extension.

Beer choice was limited with Wye Valley Butty Bach and Doom Bar, however the Butty Bach was in very good condition. Loz and Scott had Punk IPA in bottle the landlord said those were the first time he sold any of them. We quite liked it here,ok so a telly showing Sky Footie rolling scores was on but the volume was muted and it didn’t really bother us. Overall a decent village pub, beer good if limited choice.“
