“A fantastic little bar next to the rather characterless Ypres Inn. Good selection of draught beers including St. Bernardus, Het Anker and Van Steenberge. Three beers cost 15 euro, same in all three bars we visited in Ieper. Toilets are on the second floor up a steep wrought iron staircase, careful how you come back down. Opening hours from 15.00hrs in December '22. Thanks to baxterfish for the original post. 🍻“

“New place near the Menen Gate. Bicycle shop meets beer bar. Interesting beer selection with a few surprises from the likes of Brew Society and a section dedicated to cycling beers!! Let down by the awful loud music.“

“Interesting new place next to the much-loved Ypra Inn with which it appears to be associated. The gimmick here appears to me unfiltered versions of lagers straight from the tank. Of more interest is the rather good bottle list with highlights from the likes of De Ranke, De dolle, Verzet etc. They also have an unusual pricing policy with all 25cl bottles at 3 Euros & 33cl bottles at 4 Euros which make the 10% abv + beers very good value and especially the 15% stout from Verzet. Much cheaper than the nearby St Arnoldus. The cafe is pretty small but rather cozy and there is an additional upstairs seating area. Definitely worth a look. The name appears to be a play on the Danish for beer and English for owl.“

“Small shop with beer bottles and sweets. Quite a broad selection of Belgian beers and a friendly service. Close to the city centre and not too expensive, so a good place to buy a few bottles (but be aware, there is no fridge if i recall correctly).“

“Hardly ever open out of season (no times posted outside) - and on my last visit I found it open only on a late Friday afternoon. It had just Pils on draught and a choice of about five bottles. I asked for a Wipers Times, but although it was supposed to be available it was out of stock. Old and traditional, but only worth trying if you're on the Ramparts Walk as it's right next to Lille Gate (Rijselpoort) at the southern extreme of the old town walls.“

“Top kaffee. Elk bezoek verrast je door het wisselend aanbod. Uitgebreidste assortiment aan binnenlandse en buitenlandse bieren in de streek en ver erbuiten. Wat een subliem idee voor een zwarte lijst ;-) Vertel het niet verder, deze bieren zijn gereserveerd voor mij.“

“Whenever I visit Ieper, which is often, I try and visit this place, but it's often closed even when it's Facebook page says otherwise. Actually a rather nice place with the house beers along with most from St Bernard. Only the regular Rodenbach which is disappointing considering the cafe’s connections with the brewery. Service varies from ok to absent and on my last two visits I asked for their new Saison Tremist - not only did they not have it, but the barman had never heard of it, which is pretty poor considering this is the brewery tap.“

“Not quite sure why this has been put on this site as it's pretty much the same as all the other cafes on the square with little of interest to beer drinkers. Serves just the core beers from De Brabandere which are available in countless cafés in this region. Petrus Oud Bruin is about as interesting as it gets . Food is ok.“

“We visited here Saturday 4th November 2017, we'd not been to Ypres/Ieper for a number of years (9-10) and all of the places visited today, five in total were new to us including this place. I understand that it is only open between 3pm-5pm on a Saturday however as there were already people in there when we arrived I suspect that it may open a little before and stay open a little later. I believe (but may be wrong) that it is only open for those doing brewery tours which is 10 Euros including 4 generous tasters of their beers. It is located just inside the town centre so the moat is the one side with residential houses the other side of the street. It is about 5-10 mins south east walk from the centre at about 4 o' clock if you considered the centre as a clock face. It is located within what was an old Munitions shelter which as you'll find out from the video presentation on the brewery tour was one of the few places that remained intact during the Great War.

Inside you will find yourself in three large very old brick vaulted arches that go back quite a way, if viewing from the front the left hand side one is where the brewery is housed, the centre arch is where the bar and seating is and the right hand one they probably use for functions, we watched a video in here. On the tour you find out about the Wipers Times the paper printed in here for the trenches troops in the First World Ward as well as other publications printed on the site which was used by the Allies. It is an interesting tour and worth the admission fee, the beers are fine, not totally my thing but I quite liked them. The tour was in English and you find as much out about the building and its history as you do the brewery. We enjoyed it and thought it well worth the entry cost.“

’t Klein Stadhuis (Restaurant)
GROTE MARKT 32
“We visited ’t Klein Stadhuis twice on Saturday 4th November 2017. It was nice coming back to Ypres/Ieper this being our first return in about 9-10 years. ’t Klein Stadhuis is located in the Grote Markt tucked into the top corner by the Cloth Hall, I seemed to recall that there were a few restaurants in this area. On our first visit (early/mid afternoon) we weren't eating however there are a few stools up to the bar and one or two high tables along the side edge near the bar which they seem happy to let those who just want a drink use, otherwise it is as indicated a restaurant. We sat at the bar I had a Rodenbach Vintage 2015 (on tap) and Loz a bottle of Orval. There is a covered area out the front with heating, a raised area with tables on the ground floor and further seating/tables upstairs.

We came back later on early evening for a meal, and had booked the last table (booked earlier in the day on first visit, so be aware it is very popular for food) which was upstairs on the first floor. The menu was typically Belgian as you would expect the servings were generous and pricing fair. I had Ham Hock and Loz had fish, both were good, ok so they were not amazing but perfectly enjoyable. If I had one criticism it was that the menu was quite limited. This isn't a go to beery destination, however the beer choice is decent enough and the prices are very good and on the basis that Ypres isn't overrun with lots of beer destinations then this should definitely be on an mini beer tour of the city. “

“Our first stop in our first trip to Ypres in about 9-10 years, we visited Saturday 4th November 2017. Kaffee Bazaar is farly centrally located just around the corner from Chez Marie, Bottle Shop so when you get to the top end of the Grote Markt and Cloth Hall, turn left down Boomgaardstraat and it is long here on the left. From the outside it has a simple, but quite tidy in terms of looks, re: access I seem to recall a couple of steps up into this place.

Inside there are 2-3 small tables at the front end, one of which (where we sat) affords good street views. the bar is centrally located where the bar/cafe narrows and there are a few stools up to it and then the place opens up again at the rear with further seating to be found here. Its a calm, relaxing environment, with a nice mix of folk. Decor simple, I seem to recall music being played but it was unobtrusive, it really is exactly what you'd want in a cafe/bar, understated excellence and I haven't even got to the beers yet!

Beer choice was great, however I didn't really browse the menus too much instead happy to go with a Toccalmatto Birra Dell'Ussaro on tap whilst Loz settled for a (yep' you guessed it, Orval!). You really could sit here for hours and be as happy as a pig in the brown stuff. Staff were friendly, in fact the whole package, staff, surroundings, beer it was all great. A fabulous place.“

Brasserie Petrus (Restaurant)
GROTE MARKT 20
“One of several pretty much identical looking (from the outside) cafe/restaurant/bar type places in a line in the main square in Ypres. Nice terrace, bit of a sun trap, great views so nice spot especially in decent weather. Food was solid local fare, we all had the mussels plat du jour which was tasty and great value. Beer selection is nothing to write home about, on tap it's all from the Petrus/Bavik stable, and they have a few bottles as well. A solid enough place to eat between more interesting beer stops, I'd say.“

“A very nice and friendly little shop selling beer and a few other food and drink bits and bobs. The staff were super friendly and helpful, the selection was pretty decent with plenty of local and more modern breweries as well as a decent range of the classics. A decent balance between beer geekery and keeping general tourists happy I'd say. Prices obviously higher than the supermarkets but overall not expensive. A great little stop.“

Chez Marie (Beer Store)

“Our first stop in our first trip to Ypres in about 9-10 years, we visited Saturday 4th November 2017. Chez Marie is very centrally located just beyond the top end of the Grote Markt and Cloth Hall, in fact sitting directly opposite the latter. Its easy to find and with decent bars close by, well worth a visit for those unable to drive to a large specialist beer warehouse/shop and who just want to take a few bottles home.

Upon entering it initially appears quite small, however there is a further room through the back. The counter is on the RH side and beers are arranged on shelving mainly around the outside walls, with confectionery and other deli' type items on the central island.

I thought that the beer choice was fine, the prices were a bit too high but to be fair I had just been to Dranken Geers so it is unfair to compare I guess. They had a reasonable selection of glasses, we purchased a couple of these. The shop owner was really friendly and very helpful in fact a far better reception received here than most beer shops in the likes of Gent or Brugge. So more for the casual shopper than someone with a bigger more demanding list of items to buy, but nonetheless well worth popping in.“

“Small brown cafe with quiet secluded garden to the rear. The best cafe for beer in the whole province. Fully up to date with the happening breweries of the world, these people are going the extra mile to make every week special, with completely unexpected beers appearing on draught in succession. Turned Ieper from a drowsy backwater into a top beer destination. I live near Ieper. Isn't life great!“

“As far as I know, this is the best cafe for beer near the train station. Sitting outside watching the world go by on a sunny day is the preferred option as the interior of the cafe is not so attractive. The beer menu is above average for Ieper with a few highlights including Troubadour Magma and Van Viven guesting on my visit.“

“This place is of historical interest as the only place in ieper to survive WW1 intact. It’s the sort of eccentric place which makes Belgium such a great place to drink- part museum, part interior design shop & part café. The café itself is charming and sitting in the courtyard on a sunny day with a homemade lemonade or ice cream is a pure joy. The beer menu is rather good too with Pannepot & others unusual for the area such as Taras Bulba, Gruut & Gulden Caroulus. Highly recommended and an essential visit for Ieper. Opposite is the excellent De Ruyfellaer restaurant.“

“Visited 20/05/2015. On a nice warm spring day in Ieper the Grote Markt was thronged, but this place was a haven of calm and quiet. Nicely cool bar, dark and cosy with a nice courtyard. The staff were very friendly and welcoming - I ordered the Tilquin Quetsche (on draught!) and they checked I was aware that the beer was off the beaten track. Also had the Oude Bruin on tap - Van Der Ghinste but very tasty. Clean, neat and tidy with a nice, calm, laid back ambience. The staff weren’t even phased when about 15 French youths came in, most of which wanted hot chocolate etc. I would definitely go back - nice place.“

“Went 20/05/2017. As stated, 25 beers on tap, lots of bottles including most Trappist and a handful of Geuze. Platters of small tasters and snack food I think (not tried). I did not think the prices were too bad for the location. Sampled Plukker and Rodenbach Grand Cru on tap. Nice, efficient, friendly service, even when busy on a busy Saturday evening. Liked the outdoor courtyard area with the sliding covers. The staff were keen to push some beers but be firm and tell them what you want. I quite liked it.“

“Quite nice place but far too expensive. Had one beer(7 euros) and left. TOURIST TRAP. I don’t know where minutemat (below) normally drinks, but the normal price for De Dolle beers in this area is 4-4.50 Euros so 6.50 Euros is a 40-50% mark up. The nearby Bazaar has a much better ambience and is much cheaper.“

“Situated just down the road from Ieper central square. LONG narrow room, bar on the left, tables along the right that run right into the garden area at the back. Good range of draft - if I wasn’t driving I’d have had the Pannepot Reserva, but took a blonde instead. Soph had a Boon Kriek. Good bottle list including some local options. Contrary to other comments here the prices weren’t bad at all. Average of 4.60 - 5.00, some such as De Dolle were 6.50, but perfectly reasonable considering the smart decor and ambience of the place. Only complaint was my draft beer was about 1cm under the 33cl line, but couldn’t be bothered asking for a top-up. Worth a look-in when in Ieper.“
