“Quickly got a can whilst waiting for the bus. Bright green outside, pressed wood, new, bit barebones look, multiple fridges. Great mix of modern craft from Scotland, Newbarns, Wakewave, Vault City, UK, Arbor, Marble. Whiskey, soda, pre-mixed drinks too and a whole bunch more. Great place to pick something up, friendly service.“

“Visited late on a Saturday night. The place was absolutely packed with locals. Locally outside garden that must be quite pleasant in better weather. One side industrial brewery, other side pool table, barrels, older chairs and tables, some decorations make it more charming than a lot of industrial breweries. About 8 beers on tap, I have had their beers elsewhere but the condition on tap here was out of this world, best lager I have had outside of Germany probably, actually clear IPA was astonishing as well, unbelievable beer. We got some cans as takeout and the quality on those amazed us as well. Good prices too, good service despite how crowded it was, worldclass stuff.“

“A massive beer hall with arches and cellar look, impressive for sure. Most of the venue was reserved upon visit, despite this the service was surprisingly quick and very good, big points for service. Definitely a different look and a very lovely one at that. Wonderful 18 tab list with Kernel, Campervan, Fyne, Bullhouse but also multiple from the really excellent Origins which I have barely seen elsewhere, they had multiple on. Really choice and interesting bottle and can menu too, really impressive place.“

“Way bigger brewing kit than expected, modern taproom and industrial but dressed up. Two rooms upstairs fully packed, not fully comfortable with the brewing facilities visible behind glass. 2 guests (Burning Sky and Polly’s upon visit) and loads of their beer. The beer is a bit too accessible, middle of the road for me but not bad, one goes, mostly pale, lower hoppy styles. Not the greatest of beers but definitely worth checking out and solid enough for sure.“

“Absolutely packed traditional pub, locals at these parts seem to have their heating turned up high and this place was warm with a coal fireplace. Very warm here, very busy, lovely interior, huge amount of pump clips, dark green outside. Charming, lived in but quite warm as well for sure. Loads of charm, some macro on keg but also the locals Newbarns & Moonwake. Cask selection is not the common ones and in really good condition, possibly best I had on the trip. Awesome stuff.“

“Another fine addition to the Leith scene. Cosy space with darts, board games and billiards available. A number of cans also available for drinking on site and (presumably) take away. There's some outdoor seating available so should be nice in summer.“

“I've only ever used their Untappd special offer which is usually 16 or 20 beers for 30 Quid. Most are under 5% and are 33cl cans. The last time I did get a couple of 44cl cans. There's a small snack and a magazine included and free delivery. Beer52 and Honest Brew have better selections“

“The first review is clearly an employee. Avoid this. Saw a Facebook advert for 20 beers plus two glasses for thirty quid. Turned out 16 of those beers were sets of four 4% lagers and the other four were the dodgy IPA that taste of nothing. Beer52 is a far better deal. Avoid.“

“Excellent place, a proper pub with a craft beer tap list. Pretty off the beaten track but well worth a visit. 4 or 5 cask beers, mainly from Brass Castle plus about 10 + keg beers (a showcase of Tempest beers when I was in). Was in for pub quiz and the place was mobbed and difficult to get a seat but enjoyed it nonetheless. Minus a point for standard pub half pint glasses. Doesn't serve food but you can order pizza delivered to bar.“

“Excellent for whisky (obviously) and the food is decent. You wouldn't come here for beer though - 2 or 3 taps of local stuff you can find elsewhere. Overall score reflects the whisky experience rather than the beer one!“

“Very limited hours of opening (Friday and Saturday) so took a while to get to get to visit this place. I like that is very much a working brewery rather than many modern taprooms, with a pop up wooden bar installed. I visited on a summers night so managed to sit on benches outside. There was maybe only about 6 beers on offer (including the excellent Leith Juice) but it was great being able to drink these straight from the source (all keg though I have seen their beers in cask elsewhere in Leith). Pricing is simple, pints £4, halfs £2 so very reasonable!“

“We visited Leith Depot en route to the Campervan Brewery and Tap Saturday 10th February 2018 in the company of Nick, Anna. We took the bus from the centre of Edinburgh and got off at last stop or penultimate stop on Leith Walk, it was just a short walk back from the stop to this place. Can't understand why this is not under Leith as opposed to Edinburgh?

It's a mid sized one room place, *though from the the music posters near the door and gig listings I understand that there is a music venue upstairs. A random collection of old wooden table and chairs give this a lived in feel. The bar runs across the middle of the back wall. It was quite busy when we arrived but service was swift and the female member of staff very friendly. It had a bar/old café feel to it, I liked this place

Beer choice was fine I had a random German beer on tap that I'd never had a before and got fed up of searching on Ratebeer for. Loz had something from Drygate, Anna a fruity number Nick I forget what he had. This place was a pleasant surprise, ok the beer choice was limited but the place itself and the atmosphere we liked. “

“Nice pub close to the shore in Leith. Taps were surprisingly exotic/non-local, lots of blondes and bitters though. Typical pub atmosphere, some people complained that we were too loud, the staff handled it well though ;). Will bring friends here!“

“This place is really industrial, being in a literal warehouse, no heating (which meant sub-zero temperature yesterday), so don't expect a cozy pub. Beer selection and prices are good. Some nice exclusives. Would love a few more additions to the comfort. Will come back, especially when it's warmer!“

“Popped up on facebook advert with a 10% voucher so thought I'd give them a look. Quite decent selection and easy to use website. Can order on an ad hoc basis now, not just on subscription. Placed order of 24 bottles/cans, less 10% and qualified for free delivery. So far so good. Arrived within 3 days which was pretty good but only got 22. No explanation or upfront refund re the missing 2. Contacted them, and was told 'we're unable to sent out individual items at present but I have refunded you for the cost of the missing beers'. So hopefully I will get a refund for them but it's disappointing they were missing and I had to ask, and that there isn't any basic QA in place to count that the number of beers in the box matches the number of beers on the order. Update 2/3/18 - also, on closer examination, many of the bottles were very close to their best before date. Won't be ordering from them again.“

“We visited Campervan Brewery and Tap Saturday 10th February 2018 in the company of Nick, Anna, Craig, Stella and kids. It is located at the very end of Jane Street in Leith. We took the bus from the centre of Edinburgh and got off at last stop or penultimate stop on Leith Walk and after a quick beer in Leith Depot headed here.

It's in a simple industrial unit so expect a functional layout. Pallets are used to good effect as tables and to screen areas off. Long bench seats and long tables complete the picture. As we entered an employee was a little too preoccupied in fiddling with a television for a few minutes trying to get a signal presumably to get some rugby viewing sorted, he then probably noted that folk were patiently waiting, appeared to give up and serve folk including a young couple and then us.. The bar is at the far end at the rear RH side, with taps and list on the right.

Beer choice leant heavily towards the sour side today with about half of the offerings being Gose or Berliner Weisse and the others which consisted of a cherry stout and rhubarb and custard pale didn't appeal to either Loz or Nick, however Anna and I were happy. I quite liked it here, it's clearly new and still finding it's feet but they seem to be heading in the right direction.“

“This is a Really Welcome Addition to Edinburgh. On my trip to NY recently all my Fav places were tap rooms. This is starting to fill that gap in Edinburgh. Its a Nice space , looks rustic with all the pallets but seating in comfy. Beer selectio is 4 Keg taps of the Campervan Beer. The Brewery can be seen from the Tap room. I was there for the offical launch night and was pretty busy, so im really hoping this can appeal to the local market and suceed well enough to open more often. But all round, i think i would recomend the trip down to Leith for this for any people visiting Edinburgh with he time to head here,“

“Found during a seaside walk in leith. Small Bottle shop with a decent selection, mostly uk beers, some random international mixed in. I either didn't get how they are sorting the beers or there is no sorting system. Women behind the counter was nice and pointed me to some stuff I was looking for though. I do live around the corner from beerhive and will probably not visit often. Still a nice place to go when you walking through north leith.“

“A great addition to the Edinburgh beer scene, Dreadnought manages to be a proper local boozer while also a purveyor of fine craft beer. There is a family connection between one of the owners and Brass Castle brewery so it is a northern outpost in representing that brewery. Most taps are taken over with craft beer with just two taps for generic lagers. The cask beers sampled were in very good condition. There is one fridge full of generic bottles and the other is filled with craft beer. Good local pub ambiance. Not sure if there’s a food option.“

“Visited on 3rd December 2016. Dark dingy Spoons at the bottom of Leith Walk. It’s a large single room with a vaulted roof that doesn’t let in light. Decor is decent enough, service friendly and prices decent. This was a breakfast stop after a night in a hovel down the road. A St Andrews day beer fest has been on so had a great range of Scottish micros on cask. Also a whole fridge filled with cans and bottles from Scottish breweries plus all the usual offerings. One of the best craft beer ranges I’ve seen in a Spoons. Impressed and shocked!“

“Fully refurbed from the previous incarnation, decent amount of seating downstairs but would book ahead if it’s a consideration for food. Better options towards the Shore (V-Deep, Malt and Hops, Carriers Quarters...) but very pleasing to see this at Foot Of The Walk

. Candles and mismatched wooden chairs and bar stretching along width of pub with toilets accessible either side.

Opened late last year with some permanent fixtures - four lager taps and four "craft" taps with a Guiness and some weird lager in between. "craft" taps are Williams and Drygate, pretty standard - although dissapointed no Pilot available as the brewery is a hop-skip-jump behind where the pub is.

Bottles were a decent spread - aforementioned Williams and Drygate but plenty of Sierra Nevada, Edringer - stuff that’s readily available in Tesco across the road but nice to see they don’t just cram their fridge with ten kinds of the cheapest lager bottles to whack some GDP back on. Few cans of Krafty from just up the road in the fridge, but past experience indicates this is to be well swerved.

Upstairs is a two tap bar right beside the stage, one in Tennents one is Innis and Goon but some of the same bottles available - however a busy night and you’d be back downstairs. Was given a 2/3(schooner) glass for bottled 500ml beers but I doubt the attentive staff are frequently dealing with folk aspiring for glassware perfection and it was branded for the breweries in question.“

We visited The Carrier Quarter on Sunday 20th March 2016. The we being me, Dad and Barry as we were on a weekend jaunt up to Edinburgh, a Whats App from Craig when we were right close suggested this. It is well placed on Bernard Street in a little beery triangle with a Grower/Bottle shop next door and Beets (another bottle shop) across the road.

Those was a lovely little pub, a proper pub. From the outside it was a solid looking grey stone fronted building, inside it still oozed a robustness but with a rustic warm charm. Essentially it is a two room bar, the front room with bar on left and with the tiniest little snug at the front and via a small corridor festooned in gig posters and the like, you reach a lovely little square room out back with fire blasting away, the only downside to both of there was televisions blasting away with no one even watching. Beer choice was a little limited I recall 2-3 cask beers with Oakham Scarlet Macaw and as Craig correctly predicted they had an Alechemy beer on tap, both were in good nick. There were a couple of locals in here but otherwise as it was quite early’ish’ on a Sunday it was quiet. The service was good and friendly, it looks a lovely old place, pretty much unaltered by the looks of things. I liked this place and would happily return here again.

We visited Foot of the Walk JDW on Sunday 20th March 2016. On this occasion the three being me, Dad and Barry as we were on a weekend jaunt up to Edinburgh, however I have been here before with Craig a few years back. This JDW occupies a large prominently positioned old building, that is very centrally positioned in Leith, in fact very handy to sneak in a last before before the 2 minute stroll to get the bus back into town.

Inside it is a huge cavernous affair, predominantly one very large room. Whilst the usual JDW issues such as lack of natural light blight this place it isn’t as gloomy as some. I have to say I noticed something in here which I hadn’t ever noticed down south, the punters were forming a very orderly queue to wait to get served as opposed to just waiting at the bar and hoping the barperson knows your place in the order of serving, this wasn’t a one off as it continued throughout our time here. It was really busy and as ever caters superbly for all, with young families, old folk and the less well off all being able to eat and drink for very little moolah. The beer choice was good and beer was in good condition, it was as you would expect from a JDW no frills just doing what it does well.

Beets (Beer Store)
49 BERNARD STREET

We visited Beets on Sunday 20th March 2016. The we being me, Dad and Barry as the three of us were on a weekend jaunt up to Edinburgh. This is located on Bernard Street opposite the Carrier Quarters which Craig had recommended we try (and we did, cheers Craig!) and also opposite Growler UK a Growler filling station and bottle shop next door to Carrier Quarters.

From reading the reviews I was surprised to see that this place was open on a Sunday, but open it was and so we took full advantage of this. It looks at first glance like it is a Deli’, I think Craig suggested that it was more in the realms gift shop at one stage that sold beer. I guess that you can sort of see that this is morphing into a beer shop and the changes are being done bit by bit. As you enter by the front window RH side are bottles on the floor, there is a mixed bag of offerings here some easy to get stuff and then some great stuff in and amongst like Argy Bargy the Hopcraft/Steel City/Arbor collaboration beer. The serving counter is on the RH side and there appears to be a good selection of whiskies behind the counter here. On the LH side is a large fridge with a good selection of beers and then continuing down this side of the shop further shelving displaying more beers with some great hard to get stuff, I picked up a Mikkeller Crooked Moon Tattoo Stockholm Stout Brewed with Figs a beer that I had never come across before.

This is a lovely little shop and appears to be someone making a real go of it themselves, the lady was lovely and I was pleased to see that others were coming in buying stuff. It looked like she’d hurt her ankle as the next chap she served after me she had to let behind the counter to get the whisky he wanted himself as she couldn’t weight bear very well, I hope she gets better soon. Well worth your time visiting this shop if you are in the area, the choice is great, prices very reasonable and it just deserves to do well. “

We visited Teuchters Landings Sunday 20th March 2016. The we being me, Dad and Barry as the three of us were on a weekend jaunt up to Edinburgh. This is located a short walk from the centre of Leith looking out on the water, across to the left are the Scottish government buildings.

It is a rather quaint place appearing a little ramshackle on first appearance but inside anything but. The first room you enter is a good sized bar room rectangular in shape and laid out horizontally with the bar off to the RH side. There are some tables and chairs off to the LH side, it has a cosy welcoming feel to it. Beyond this room are two further rooms the next room is smaller and in fact is split into two the left hand one of these is really quite private. Some fascinating old aerial photos adorn the walls and show this area before the large scale renovation and tidying up that has gone on in recent years. A further conservatory type building is slotted onto the rear and affords some waterside views, this room was by far the busiest on our visit as many were eating here. Further seating outside by the water would probably be popular in the summer months, though one hardy couple took advantage of the spring sunshine and ate out here today.

The beer selection was pretty good, ok it wasn’t amazing, however it did offer a good range of some local beers and I managed to find a couple of new beers to me. I rather liked this place and would strongly suggest any beery nip out to Leith should include this amongst the itinerary.

“The dried hops adorning the ceiling give you an idea of this pub’s focus. Note well however that apart from one Williams Bros keg tap there isn’t any keg or bottle to choose from. This is a real ale pub, with varied it all low boost choices for its seven casks, including - curiously - three from North Cotswold brewery... a tap takeover of sorts? Worth coming to at any rate.“

“Waterside pub on Leith Docks. A world away from Edinburgh city centre, this is still a relaxing and beer-aware pub. Several rooms to choose from, including one in the back overlooking the water. Piped music but I don’t mind. Some old-fashioned tunes (what we Americans might call AOR). A few interesting casks, including one from the innovative and the local Pilot, with a handful of craft keg taps and some bottles which are new to me.“

“Better than your average Spoons, the Foot of the Walk looks like an estate pub but offers a brilliant cask choice along with bottled and cask options. The cask selection is understandably Scottish, but so is the keg, with Williams Bros Joker IPA and a Drygate beer available. The bottles are above average for the JDW chain as well, offering Anchor, Flying Dog and Sierra Nevada among others. A brilliant beer-led arm of the Wetherspoons empire.“
