62 /100 Duke’s Corner (Bar) 13 BROWN ST Roadhouse type venue with outdoor patio. Craft on draft plus a couple of taps. Nothing too exciting but not bad either. |
36 /100 Braes (Perth Road) (Bar) 14-18 PERTH ROAD Seems more like a low end commercial pub than a craft destination. A couple of Brewdog and Beavertown offerings. Food is so-so. Dogs welcome. |
68 /100 BrewDog Dundee (Bar) CHAMBER BUILDING, PANMURE STREET Short walk from train station. In an eclectic old building. Somewhat small for a Brewdog but not busy on a Wednesday afternoon. Pretty typical Brewdog but with fewer guest beers than bigger city Brewdogs. Several different Holy Goat offerings though. |
64 /100 Counting House (JDW) (Bar) 67-71 REFORM ST I try not to review Wetherspoons pubs on here, but with this one at least you have a reliable real ale destination in Dundee. Very surprised at just how awful the pub/beer scene is in this fair city. Reasonable example of this chain as it happens. |
70 /100 Bank Bar (Bar) 7/9 UNION STREET Decent pub sporting four cask ales (they had a better selection than the Phoenix up the road). Food looked good although I didn't partake. |
58 /100 Phoenix Bar (Free) (Bar) 103 NETHERGATE Well worn trad boozer, boasting four cask ales, one of which was TT Landlord. I must admit this place didn't really do it for me but in a poor beer town like Dundee this pub will no doubt stand out. |
56 /100 Market (Bar) 7-9 SEAGATE Weird kinda place. Almost exactly like a slightly rougher "modern style" spoons, but it isn't part of the empire. 6 hand pulls, only 2 on during my visit, 1x Stewart & 1x law. Nice condition anyhow. Have a very random selection on "craft beer" cans on the fridge to the far left with a menu on each table. Some 50 or son on offer from local 71, with more random offerings from Seven Bro7hers, Only with Love, Little Monster & Laine. So they must have some Sussex connection! Cheap prices. No frills. Probably worth a quick visit. |
88 /100 36-40 BELLFIELD ST Beer garden style taproom.
Good selection of their own beers. |
36 /100 George Orwell (Bar) 168 PERTH ROAD They only have a handful of craftbeers, most of which are for sale at the local supermarket. Don't go here expecting to find interesting beers. The interior stands out, with cozy armchairs, but that's about it. |
52 /100 Speedwell Bar (Bar) 165-167 PERTH ROAD Despite the fact that the owner appeared to be a homebrewer (we were lucky enough to taste one of his beers when we were there), there isn't a lot of (craft) beer to be found in this place. Even to the point that I question why the pub is on ratebeer.
That said, the service is great, we had a very nice chat with Jonathan (the owner), the pub itself looks great, the ambiance is great, and to top it of: they have a whisky selection of over 200 (?) bottles, with some very rare whisky's as well. One of the best pubs we visited, not just in Dundee, but on our whole tour through Scotland, but as a beer place I can't really recommend this. |
62 /100 Braes (Perth Road) (Bar) 14-18 PERTH ROAD chain student bar with cheapish food and a decent craft beer selection including beers from local 71 Brewery. Worth a visiit though nothing particularly outstanding. |
62 /100 40 NETHERGATE Another proper boozer, this seems like the kind of pub designed for standing and watching football on the screen. Busy with good atmosphere. Beer selection isn’t great, there is no real surprises here though a lot of taps! I just had a Punk IPA. Not a place you would visit for selection. |
84 /100 36-40 BELLFIELD ST Located about 10 mins walk from City Centre, this is a great little tap room in the brewery. It doesn’t feel much like a bar but an enjoyable experience nonetheless. Beer is well priced and a good selection of their own keg beers plus some guests, one cask ale (Fyne Jarl on this visit) and a fridge of cans and bottles. Look forward to visiting again. |
66 /100 Phoenix Bar (Free) (Bar) 103 NETHERGATE Good traditional boozer in City centre. Live sport on TV, always seems to be busy. There is a few cask ales plus likes of Leffe, Budvar etc. Food well priced. |
84 /100 BrewDog Dundee (Bar) CHAMBER BUILDING, PANMURE STREET This BrewDog seemed fairly central in Dundee. A short walk from the waterfront. The bar seemed fairly small but had a fair number of taps and a small outside seating area. Similar feel to other BrewDog bars. |
28 /100 Speedwell Bar (Bar) 165-167 PERTH ROAD Visited on a Friday. Very busy, limited beer selection, didn't stay. |
60 /100 Counting House (JDW) (Bar) 67-71 REFORM ST Typical spoons. Very busy on a Friday. |
26 /100 Taybridge Bar (Bar) 129 PERTH ROAD Visited on a Friday night. Incredibly busy which wasn't too surprising. No casks on so promptly left. |
70 /100 40 NETHERGATE Busy little city centre bar, 4 handpumps with a varying selection. Worth popping in. |
72 /100 Counting House (JDW) (Bar) 67-71 REFORM ST Very busy Spoons, decent selection (Scottish festival on when visited). |
74 /100 BrewDog Dundee (Bar) CHAMBER BUILDING, PANMURE STREET Nice building, inside is standard Brewdog. Usual sort of selection and pricing. |
82 /100 BrewDog Dundee (Bar) CHAMBER BUILDING, PANMURE STREET Likely to be the best option for craft beer in Dundee through lack of competition. Smaller than most Brewdog bars, but it’s well formed, in a nice building. The usual selection of 8-10 Brewdog beers plus a few guest taps. Friendly, helpful staff. Didn’t eat. |
38 /100 Old Bank Bar (Bar) 34 REFORM ST Nice building but its never really done it for me as a bar. |
60 /100 Counting House (JDW) (Bar) 67-71 REFORM ST Its a SPoons. with an OK selection of cask, occasionally see a local brewery. So worth a quick look in |
76 /100 BrewDog Dundee (Bar) CHAMBER BUILDING, PANMURE STREET A pretty decent BD, and sadly there not much competiotion in Dundee, so One of Dundees best bars. Typical BD beer list and the industrial like feel. but wonderful building outside |
66 /100 Taybridge Bar (Bar) 129 PERTH ROAD A old fassioned drinking man local. But its probably the best place to find the Hawk hill beers. Nice enough but can be pretty busy with local |
62 /100 BrewDog Dundee (Bar) CHAMBER BUILDING, PANMURE STREET Located across from the beautiful McManus Museum (free and well worth a visit!). Very friendly staff. Small bar but a good number of tables and booths. 10 Brewdogs (including 2 over 30% ABV) + 5 guest brews on tap. Flights (4-5 oz each) available. WiFi available. |
62 /100 Counting House (JDW) (Bar) 67-71 REFORM ST Functional Wetherspoon pub in the heart of the city facing the Robert Burns statue. It’s in an old bank building but there’s not the architectural splendour in this one than in other similar refurbishments by this chain. The look and design are familiarly Wetherspoon and its a cosy enough place with warming carpets in a convivial space, although the platform area to the rear where the bookshelves are is probably the best place to head for if you come here. There’s the usual selection of rotating ales available. |
72 /100 Phoenix Bar (Free) (Bar) 103 NETHERGATE Good pub for a decent pint and good quality pub food. Regularly go here before football when playing either of the Dundee teams. Not so much a place for a quiet pint as it attracts quite a lot of students and also has big tvs up showing the early kick offs. Not a huge selection but beer tends to be in good condition. Good menu of simple but tasty food for good prices. |
60 /100 McDaniel's Pub (Bar) 36 WHITEHALL CRESCENT Long established boozer with the usual selection of beers plus the odd guest beer. Great ambience, especially when the live music is on. Didn’t try the food. Worth a visit. |
56 /100 Old Bank Bar (Bar) 34 REFORM ST Really big pub which is beautiful in the interior, serving the usual selection plus the odd guest beer. Definitely an old man’s boozer - 90% of clientele are male and the same percentage are over 45, I reckon. It’s just as busy as it was 25 years ago - very refreshing to see. |
66 /100 Nether Inn (Bar) 134 NETHERGATE A bar that has changed several times in the last couple of decades. Great ambience and three Brewdogs on tap as well as the traditional stuff. It’s somewhere between a student and a hippy den in appearance and it’s easy to relax with the way the seating is arranged. |
64 /100 Duke’s Corner (Bar) 13 BROWN ST Modern large pub with dancefloor. A big selection of craft beer as well as a traditional selection. Didn’t try the food. Worth a visit, even if a bit noisy late at night. |
80 /100 Phoenix Bar (Free) (Bar) 103 NETHERGATE 20 years ago when I was a student in Dundee. This bar was easily the most progressive in the city if not in Scotland - it had a Belgian and German beers when everywhere else just had Lager and Heavy. It hasn’t changed much and in that respect though it hasn’t advanced, it’s just right as it is. Excellent atmosphere as it serves a constantly mixed clientele of students, stray drinkers and long time faithful punters. Still a good selection of beer, great atmosphere and good food at a great price. |
76 /100 Duke’s Corner (Bar) 13 BROWN ST A very impressive bar in the centre of Dundee which has a commitment to real craft beers from Scotland and around the world. Lovely atmosphere, fantastic location and amazing selection of regulars and guest ales. This is one of the bars that is kicking off the craft scene in Dundee, a must see for anyone interested in craft beer! |
44 /100 Artbar (Bar) 140 PERTH ROAD Nice student/arty basement bar located across the road from the Duncan and Jordanstone Art College. Quite a nice atmosphere though sadly the selection has dropped significantly with their being not many notable drinks on offer other than a few bottled ales, in the past there was a significant European selection of beers. |
60 /100 Phoenix Bar (Free) (Bar) 103 NETHERGATE Lovely old fashioned style pub with a beautiful interior on the Perth Road in the West End of Dundee. This pub has a decent selection of beers including Leffe on tap (The only bar to my understanding in Tayside which does sell this on tap). A notable pub on the Perth Road, not a blinding selection but in tandem with the other notable pubs in Perth Road it makes a good night out. |
50 /100 Speedwell Bar (Bar) 165-167 PERTH ROAD Very nice looking bar, but beer selection was terrible poor. realy only worth it for the interior |
60 /100 Phoenix Bar (Free) (Bar) 103 NETHERGATE Decent old style bar, with a smal selection of beers, the shame is its often very boring in selection, though rumout has it they sometimes have luckie beers |
48 /100 Speedwell Bar (Bar) 165-167 PERTH ROAD Quite a popular traditional local bar which has been in historic service in the far end of the Perth Road for many years giving it a cult status in the city. A number of standard beers are on offer with a selection of wheat beers. Quite a nice pub to visit for a drink or two when visited outside of peak hours, avoid during football matches! |
52 /100 40 NETHERGATE Quite a nice little traditional bar in Dundee with a decent selection of beers. The bar has a large number of taps serving up various standard lagers and ales however there are a few decent selections amongst them including Hoegaarden and Blue Moon as well as Japanesse lagers and wheat beers.
Sadly the selection is not what it used to be however this is still a worthwhile pub that is best visited in non-peak hours. |
68 /100 Phoenix Bar (Free) (Bar) 103 NETHERGATE Ale and food-oriented westend pub in the university area of Dundee. Five hand pulled real ales, including two from Timothy Taylor – I had a pint of TTs Landlord in perfect condition, so was the scampi food. Welcoming atmosphere with nice decor and interior. Mid crowded on a Friday afternoon.
|
58 /100 Speedwell Bar (Bar) 165-167 PERTH ROAD Cosy and friendly pub in the university area of Dundee. Almost unspoilt Edwardian interior from the early 1900s. Just two real ales are served. Deuchars and, the guest beer, Ruddles County were on during my visit. Nothing to complain about concerning the freshness of the cask ales, but this is perhaps more a pub you visit because of the stunning interiors than the ales. A true Scottish heritage pub atmosphere can be enjoyed here. |
