“Visited early afternoon on weekday and the place was steady but not busy. This place has clearly been here a while. You can tell by the vibe, and by the dates on the bottom of the mug club mugs, which I saw as early as 2003. The mugs were the highlight as the place, as the sides were uniform, but people put a huge amount of creativity in the bottoms which were visible hanging from the ceiling almost like an art project. Other than that the place seemed smallish, with lots of wood and brick. Customer service was sufficient but no more. 6 beer flight was less than $1 per sample. Beer quality is serviceable, nothing over the top but a few options most people could drink and enjoy. I get the sense they’ve made mostly the same recipes for years. I found street parking was fairly simple, and the town itself is quite charming.“

“I stopped in here a couple of times this week while up in the area training for work. Brick front building in the center of downtown Hallowell. Exposed brick with lots of warm wood and lots of brewanaria hanging on the walls. 6 house brews on tap with one guest tap well. The beer ranged from decent to good with no real standouts, but no real flops either. Pub grub and comfort food dominate the menu. I enjoyed the pot roast and the burger I had. Prices seem quite reasonable. I would come back if in the area.“

“Other than the beer, this is a hidden gem. The beer itself isn’t bad necessarily (the porter is very nice) bt most of it tastes like a muddy English cask ale. Still, this completely works when the place is such a cozy small town pub. The food is shockingly good. Really well done comfort food and home style pub fare. Atmosphere is great.always crowded with tons of wood, a big bar, comfy couches. The location is definitely off the beaten path, so it’s unlikely you’ll just be passing through for a stop, but if you find yourself spending time I the Augusta area, this place is a great experience.“

“Crooked Crooked Crooked! for the second time RIPPED off. I went in with another person, bought 109.00 worth of seafood, we all heard the number. days later my husband asked me why did you spend + $144.00 for seafood??!! I said I didn’t!!! I went though and even added up with sales tax, $108. I went in and asked for the guy to call me 2x. last time I went in I left my bank statement showing what he charged me and told him I am contacting the better business bureau, got a message. Then I go in, he was there, I tell him why I am there, he acts like new news to him and his ENTIRE demeanor changed; NASTY. By the way, this is the second time I got ripped off by this place. bought 3 lobsters for my parents right before I went back to my duty station in Germany. was supposed to be less than $30. my credit card was charged $60. YES SIXTY dollars for 3 1lb and 1/4 lobsters, he didn’t think that was STRANGE??!!!! So this time when he told me the cost of my purchase I had a witness that the bill was 109.00 and my bank statement says 144. I see what is going on!!! HE is all MR. friendly, while he doesn’t give an itemized receipt and pads the bill etc. BUYER BEWARE THIS GUY IS A SCUM BAG. Oh and he said, talk to my customers they are happy with me, and I laughed because I talked to 3 people and they told me how they order 1 pound of something, with other items, and he will sell you 3 pounds of something. nothing is marked, there is no weigh scale with the price print out. Never this would happen here. Cute store, guy seems friendly, talks fast repeats himself, catch him in his lie and you will see how it really is. FYI Still want to go there, watch the scale and GET your UN-itemized receipt! good for you buddy ripping off a 100% disabled vet trying to buy seafood for her parents.“

“Man, what a great place almost in the middle of nowhere! Had a fantastic meal with great pints with my family. Ambience was great, my kids were welcomed, nothing at all bad to say about it, except that it’s not in my neighborhood!“

“No beer but they do have a few sakes. Friendly store with good seafood and a nice cheese selection.“

“The good news is that the Liberal Cup offers generous portions of decent bar food at reasonable prices and full 20oz pints which are also quite inexpensive. They usually seem to have about half a dozen of their own beers on tap plus one or two guest beers. Unfortunately, I find their beers to be no better than mediocre. The Tarbox Stout and their porter are probably the best of the beers I’ve had there but the Backhouse Bitter and Alewife Ale are both relatively third-rate expressions their styles. I also find the ambiance kind of dark and unwelcoming. Service is adequate. Unless other business brings you to Augusta and Hallowell I recommend skipping the Liberal Cup and traveling to the Marshal Wharf brew pub in Belfast or the Lion’s Pride beer bar in Brunswick for a much better beer.“

“The best bar in the area in my opinion. Better-than-average bar-fare food. Nice setup, kind of a dark European pub type place. As far as selection goes, they have around 8 of their own taps and a "guest tap" (recently Geary’s Pale Ale), so the focus is on their beers. The selection is limited, but the beers they make are quite good IMO. The stout and the pale ale are the best in my opinion, but all the beers I’ve tried from them have been decent. They even have their own cask-conditioned beer, which impressed me for such a non-descript bar in a part of the state not known for its bars or brewing. Service has also been good when I’ve been here (and I’m not just saying that because one of my students works there). The waitstaff seems to have some knowledge and familiarity with the beers made here. If you’re in the Augusta-Gardiner area, this is the pub to go to.“

“Brewpub located in Hallowell, outside of Augusta, kind of historic. Nice old atmosphere, old brick walls inside etc. Bar/very small brewery with seperate dining area as well. Usually pretty busy. Usually serving 6 house beers, one is cask-conditioned and one seasonal. Pints are actually 20 oz. ($3.50) Can also get half-pints and $4 sampler of 6 beers (3 oz. each). Decent but unspectacular pub fare (but will cook burgers rare like I like ’em)! Update 9/3/07: Am bumping this up a notch because of good experiences with food (try the bangers and smash!) and now that I’ve rated a few more I mostly like what they brew.“

“A dark English-style pub/restaurant with a tiny brewing system in the back. Really quaint and homey. Food was good pub fare, but the beers were served a little too young in most cases. Beers are suited to session drinking (aren’t nearly all Maine-born beers?), even the Smelt Camp Strong Ale, the most flavorful and balanced of all on the menu that day. Not a place a beer geek should seek out, but a nice place to grab lunch and a pint if you’re in the area of Augusta.“

“A decent "down home" brewpub for the locals - kinda reminds me of the Prince Arthur Brewpub in Thunder Bay as it has very limited capacity and little selection. Regular pubfare was available to eat while watching the baseball game on TV. I had to drink-n-dash as I was hoping to make it up to Orono for lunch and I was already 1 hour behind due to the HEAVY traffic on the turnpike due to construction.“
