“local bar / restaurant, during the seasons it’s maybe a bit crowded by tourist from the nearby camp sites. not a real craft beer bar. selection is pretty much the same as any other cafe down to the city valkenburg.“

78 /100 GROTE STRAAT 8

We visited Cafe ’t Voske on Wednesday 29th June 2016. We cycled from our campsite about 2-3 mins, it was so close and so handy. If you are heading out from Maastricht take the N590 and when you get to the roundabout at Berg En Terblijt head down Grote Straat (3rd exit?) and after the road bends it is on the RH side, so just avoid going straight on at that roundabout as this will take you onto Valkenburg.

We arrived about 2pm and were ravenous so ordered a some food. We sat outside there are quite a few tables out here under a large awning, though the weather was dry and warmish some folks decided to sit further out on some seating on the pavement area. You look out onto what is predominantly some local housing and it appears that the locals do use this place. This is quite a modern looking Café it appears be a Brand Café, I went inside (briefly) and most of the taps were Brand with Imperator, Lentebock and others on tap that I could see, the large awning was also Brand.

The food was great, truly excellent with very big portions. We had salad. Loz had a warm Goats cheese salad, I had a salad Nicoise, Loz had a whole cheese on hers which was really thick. We washed-up these down with Orval (Loz) and Brand Oud Bruin (me) I also had a Lentebock. The beer menu was pretty good with a decent selection to go at and not just Brand stuff, all of the Rochefort for instance were also available, agreed it’s not a really big list, but it’s decent enough and coupled with the very good food is worth a visit. Both of the staff we spoke to were really nice, we loved it here. I cannot comment too much on the inside as I only briefly ventured in,but the bar was on the LH side and it looked like there were a fair few tables in here also. It has a Frituur attached to the side which opens from 16:30. I went about 20:00 by bike and rode like the wind, we got some chips (they were great) we had these with our chicken wrapped in smoked Alsace Jambon which we had for tea, the café was quite busy at this time.

Update I completely take on board the comments by Markextrae who has visited here after me i.e. in simple terms this is probably not that very different to many other Cafes. However Beers, Cafes and what people get out of them is very subjective. I don’t always look out for Specialist Craft Beer Cafes, sometimes just being able to get hold of a reliably decent beer, good food, decent surroundings will be every bit as well received by me as a Craft Beer place selling the latest rare beers. We had not long turned up at the campsite, time was knocking on and we didn’t fancy going into Maastricht, I did a quick google of somewhere local and found this place, it was great! In fact I would rather visit this place than many, many Craft places that shall remain unnamed. Great staff who were really friendly, great food and even though I never chose a great beer on my visit (Loz did) I knew that I could have had an Orval or Rochefort.
