“Vistied on 04/08/2019 – Small place with a lot of small Dutch breweries, some big Belgians. Worth a visit for the Dutch beers. Had hoped to cross a few “Belgian” bock beers but none of them… Would revisit when in the neighborhood.“

“03/08/2019 – visited during a short stay in Valkenburg. I wanted to order a tasting plate but apparently they get to choose the beers in that case. Strange, so they choose, I suppose the beers that are already long time on? Even if I said I wanted to try their own beers in a tasting plate, not possible. The pub itself is a nice place, people were not so very friendly. Maybe worth a visit to try their own beers but for the rest nothing very special on the list either. A bit dissapointing.“

“Not really an craft walhalla. They got most Brand beers and few Jopen and 't IJ. But after an climb on an hit summer day in late August at the Valkenburg castle ruins, that place works very well for recovery or relaxation with an Brand Weizen and Limburgse Vlaai with apricots.“

“This act the taproom of "defunct" Leeuw brewery once active in Valkenburg and now owned by brewery Haacht. So Leeuw Pilsener and Oud Bruin are still available in the city and region but the rest are Haacht beers. So if you in to that, this is your place. Nice front terras overlooking the square and reconstructed city gate. The terras in the back overview the romantic river the Geul as only establishment in Valkenburg. Didn't tried the food and the serve tasters of their beers.“

“If you visit Valkenburg and Luke beer this is the place you can buy it with plenty to choose. The Dutch and Belgian selection is large, the other countries have them fair share of deal. But I went fire the local beers.“

“Whenever I am in Valkenburg, I surely visit this place. I go there at least once a year to buy the Planet Oedipus beers, that I know they have. Also the nice local Gringel beers are a nice reason to visit this place. The selection in this place is huge. Like really huge. With many beers from my favourite brewer (Pohjala), local beers, US beers, English beers. You name it, they have it. And also many glasses and nice gift sets. It is really nice. The ambiance is fine. It is located in the nice centre of Valkenburg in a nice old building. The interior is simple. White and light with simple racks with beers. Nothing special, but the narrow isles give it something cosy. Service is fine. I didn't need much service the times I were there. Staff is friendly and helpful. Nothing wrong with it. So, overall, definitely visit this place. It really is a nice store.“

“Busy and popular pub on the main tourist street through Valkenburg. There is an outdoor seating area as with all the other bars round here and an interesting, possibly old interior. Made up as a British style pub but misses the mark a little, but interesting in its own way, wood panels and old artifacts. In the back room there was a male voice choir in practice. The beer list is smallish but with one or two fair choices.“

“This is a relaxed mixed style cafe just within the city wall near the Grendelpoort gate after which the cafe takes its name. We were able to use the outside seating on all our visits but the interior looks pretty comfortable too. There is a decent and unusual beer list here, with its attachment to the bottle shop next door with specials on draught as well as in bottle. Always welcoming. A must visit in this town.“

“This is a terrific beershop next to the Cafe de Grendelpoort and owned by the same people. I was after unusual Dutch beers and they have them in abundance. The people who run the shop are very helpful and knowledgeable and you get plenty of time to make your choices. There are lots of Dutch beers then interesting choices from around the beer making world, all in their own part of the well ordered shop. The one downer I found was that they do not take internationally accepted cards, so I had to make a dash to a hole in the wall for some cash, but this is pretty common with the rest of The Netherlands. An excellent beershop highlighted again by Ratebeer places for which I am eternally grateful.“

“I never saw this kind of selection in my life before! Everything is sorted by countries and there just isn't any end to it. Mikkeller, Stone, Evil Twin, To Ol, Lervig, Schneider, Boon, 3 Fonteinen, and so on... Almost every brewery that I can think of in the context of (popular) good beer seems to be well established here. Have you ever seen a shop that sells the top Imperial Stouts only 4 meters away from the top Gueuzes? Yes? Ok. Yeah well maybe I am too new. The next positive remark are the absolutely fair and reasonable prices. Starting at 1.5 Euros in the discount shelf, 3 to 4.5 for 80+% of the selection, and apparently a bit more for the barrel aged and so stuff. The lady handed me a big paper box for all my new friends. Only my strength and wallet kept me from buying half the shop. Next remark: There is almost no bullshit. By grabbing any bottle you would have an incredibly high chance of it being in the 80+ or 90+ percentile. The only thing you don't find are: absurd country ticks and a huge Franconian selection. (Schlenkerla was still seen). Very amazed with this shop!“

“How else can you rate ambiance from a beer shop with >2000 beers? Lady at the counter knows the shop in/out. Nice selection, not sure about pricing. OK place.“

We cycled from our campsite to Valkenburg via a spot of lunch at Café ’t Vöskee in Berg En Terblijt on Wednesday 29th June 2016 and after popping to the beer shop next door we visited De Grendelpoort. De Grendelpoort and Bierboetiek De Zythotheek (Beer Store) are both pretty central in the town, after coming down the steep hill from Maastricht direction turn right under the arch in the pedestrian area and they can be found on the RH side.

The weather was really pleasant, warm and sunshine and white clouds so we sat outside looking outwards, this is a great spot for people watching I must say and being a touristy type town you do get some interesting sights. The bar is nothing out of the ordinary to look at, it’s a plain looking frontage with a red awning, a chalk board to the LH side of the front door displays the beers on tap, I think that there were 12-13 with Stone Arrogant Bastard, Stone IPA, Põhjala Crema etc the beer of the month was listed as Rodenbach Charactere Rouge. Loz had the Stone IPA, I had the Põhjala Crema both were great but mine won out we reckon so we both had another this time both having Põhjala Crema. Four American folk sat near us and did a tasting of three of the tap beers which they seemed to enjoy.

I only briefly ventured inside as it was lovely out here. It was smallish but with plenty of seating, it was really nice inside a little busy with beery memorabilia. The bar was off to the LH side on entering. This would be quite cosy and comfortable in the winter months I reckon. The service was good and the prices also, our four beers cost just €16 so for Stone and Põhjala I reckon that was very reasonable prices. We really enjoyed this place it was a great find and it was nice not to do the usual of having to go into Maastricht to find good bars, we’d found two today by getting on our bikes and exploring these smaller places, however not looking forward to the hill (a steep hill in the Netherlands, who’d have believed that eh?)

We visited Bierboetiek De Zythotheek on Wednesday 29th June 2016. We cycled from our campsite via lunch at Café ’t Vöske. I have to say encountering a fairly steep hill in the Netherlands on the road down into Valkenburg was quite a shock. The beer shop is pretty central and can be found next door to Bierspecialeitencafe De Grendelpoort (the beer shop and Café are owned by the same people) so get your beers at the beer shop and head next door for a great beer to sit and relax with (we did just that)

The shop is very well laid out as you enter the counter is off to the LH side and behind you will find lots of glasses, on this side of the shop further on it was mostly Belgian beers, a pretty good selection I must say. On the RH side at the front of the shop you’ll find the American stuff, I briefly looked at these and there were some great beers however I was more interested in the Dutch beer choice which was further on there was a central shelving pretty much floor to ceiling which almost divides the shop, the Dutch beers were mostly at the end here but also on the RH wall of shelving. The beer selection was very, very impressive. I was ages just checking out Jopen, Het Uiltje and new breweries unknown to me. The prices were also good, moving back towards the front were beers from Scandinavia with some great stuff from the likes of T’Ol etc, opposite was some top notch UK stuff.

We really liked this place, if I have to mark it down it would be for the person running it today. He appeared a mistrusting type who kept walking around the side of the store where we were and pretending to shuffle some beers around whilst keeping an eye on me, Loz said he got in a right flap when she walked around the other side as he didn’t know what to do or who to follow. I have to say we both a bit fed up with this sort of scrutiny, nothing was said but he clearly mistrusted us. I tried to make small talk at the counter with him but that was also hard work. I spent €35 as I recall, I would have spent more but was limited as we were cycling back. it’s a great shop, superb choice, I have scored it highly on everything but service as I just wish we could have felt more welcome.

“Visited a couple of years ago and was quite Satisfied then. Some new ticks and when I told the staff I was looking for unrated beers they went looking in the cellar for old obscure stuff. Quite liked it, but I have no idea what it’s like nowadays.“

“Lovely decorated pub (bottles everywhere!) with great staff. Beerselection wasn’t too big and kind of conservative. Toilets also could’ve been cleaner. Great place to visit when you’re in Valkenburg. I didn’t know about the secret beerstash though... They should write that down on one of their blackboards. Their own beers are worth trying. I really liked the Duustere Gringel.“

“Located next to the Grendelpoort, hence the name, in the historic village of Valkenburg, you find this cosy brown bar. Lots of bottles throughout the bar, cosy bar with mostly older visitors. The music is played with normal volume, so you can enjoy the classic songs they played and have a good chat. The bartenders (owners?) are friendly and absolutely in for a chat about beer, brewers, beer ideology and everything else beer related. Proudly presented their own beer and sold some to go. The bartender told me he had more beers than listed, so he came up with some stouts and ipa’s. Tell him your favorite style and he finds you something. Enough interesting brews from tap like the new ABT from Emelisse. Haven’t seen any food or food info/list, but we could order things like olives and a meat/cheese plate. All by all a nice bar to visit when you are in Valkenburg and enjoy the historic surroundings with a good beer.“

“The tourist town of Valkenberg has more hotel beds than Amsterdam; it is also full of good quality restaurants, bars, coffee houses, a cable chairlift, guided cave tours and interesting souvenir shops. It even has a castle ruins on a hill top, the only one in Holland. Cafe De Grendelpoort is on the pedestrian road close to the said Grendelpoort (an old entrance in the town walls) and has a canopied front terrace, which is heated during cold weather: you can sit and watch the world go by, or flick peanuts at the people sat in the bar terrace across the road if you wish. As you walk into the actual bar you are met by dark wood and basic furniture, with the bar to the left and a huge fireplace to your right. It is also obvious you are in much loved and well used Belgian style bar, even if you are in Holland. The walls are covered with old beer bottles, cans, beer memorabilia and pictures of the local clientele in their Christening clothes, boys on one side, girls the other, slightly weird to be honest and certainly different. Six fonts with La Chouffe and their own Blonde (brewed in Belgium, he wouldn’t tell me where) the only regular taps, the other four constantly changing, and over 200 bottles to choose from, both Belgian and Dutch. The beer menu lists about 50, you have to ask for the others and hope he has some in stock, ask for beers by style, like Amber or a Christmas beer and you might be surprised what turns up, I was! Most of the customers were drinking the three glass selection: you get a small circular tray containing the house Blonde and two other draught beers, normally an amber brew and a darker beer (whatever he has on tap at the time) with a few bits of cheese to nibble on as you sip the beers. My small party of four, including myself started our session with that little treat. Husband and wife team own and run the place, friendly, chatty, knowledgeable, both have excellent English (like almost every Dutch person) and they take their holidays in Belgium every year because they love the beers so much! “

“small bar nicely situated in Valkenburg. Outdoor terrace, be aware off the Party-bar with lousy music across the street and the karaoke-bar nextdoors! Bar has a nice selection of mostly belgian beers, some dutch beers. Most interesting are two beers that are exclusively served here (on draft). Both beers are brewed elsewhere but are the owners recipe.“

“Located in the scenic centre of Valkenburg. Quite small place, old wooden interior. Loads of old and new bottles decorate the interior. They have made two recipes for beers, which are only available at the bar. Bartender told that in the old days they used to brew it themselves, but as they sell quite a lot of their Gringel beer, it is brewed in Belgium now. Quite cosy, slight busy. Medium selection. Ok bar.“

“Stopped by this place after doing the Christmas Market in the caves. There are a ton of bars and restaurants in this area. It’s a small cool little place. Beer bottles and cans all over the place. The staff seemed nice, but service could have been a little better. Maybe too many tourists in and out this day. The selection was pretty good, just wish they had more seasonals on tap. Not bad price wise. I didn’t eat, but there were a lot of others with soups and stuff, it looked pretty good. I’ll definitely stop by here again if I’m ever back in Valkenburg. Worth the look!!“
