14 /100 O'Donaghue's Irish Pub (Bar) 1696 WATER ST Characterful old building built as a private residence in 1824. Lots of brick on the outside, lots of wood on the inside. Small serving bar plus pub tables, half a dozen or so sidewalk patio tables with umbrellas. I wish I could tell you what the beer and food were like, but they wouldn't serve me. They didn't actually refuse, they just never came to my table despite my asking several times, and even going up to the bar. Only one table occupied inside and two people outside, so the single server shouldn't have been too overwhelmed. There is no beer list, but the server recited the beers to the next table and I overheard - Guinness plus a half dozen locals. I waited 35 minutes during which time the kitchen closed, an hour and a half before closing time on a Wednesday. Honestly don't know what happened. But I had a very tasty meal and a couple of local beers at an Indian restaurant a couple of blocks away. I guess this place didn't need the business. Very sad that I can't give a 0 for service because that's exactly what I got. |
80 /100 55 NEWCASTLE BLVD In an industrial part of the port. Large but pockmarked parking lot. Modern sleek taproom with a nice looking bar, bunch of restaurant tables and a medium sized patio with picnic tables. Outdoor was full on the beautiful warm sunny day that I visited. Fourteen beers on tap including four guests and a cider. Beers were tasty enough and not too too many NEIPAs. No food. Friendly staff. I saw no dogs or kids. OK stop if you're in the area. |
76 /100 Alcool NB Liquor - Newcastle (Beer Store) 227, RUE PLEASANT The entire beer section is a giant walk-in cooler, an interesting concept if not cost-effective nor climate-friendly. Pretty much all the New Brunswick breweries are represented as is Gahan House, which counts as PEI here on RB. Organization is by brewery rather than by by style. No mixed sixes or anything similar, as far as I could tell. I didn't need any help from staff, so that one's tricky to evaluate. Prices were low. Tons and tons of parking. |
60 /100 Alcool NB Liquor - Newcastle (Beer Store) 227, RUE PLEASANT Passing by as ANBL have different inventories, found a barley wine aged in red wine. Looking forward to try that. |
64 /100 Vera Kitchen & Bar (Restaurant) 84, NORTON LANE, RITCHIE’S WHARF Nice place as visiting a little bit southern from the Acadie, nice location, good food, and an ok beer selection from local micro brewers. |
