Red Lion (Bar)
THE SQUARE
“As cosy a traditional pub as any other in the village of Hawkshead - a nice place to frequent, although the weather was good on my summer visit so I sat supping my ale outdoors at the pub's side. What is noteworthy though is that there's a good row of ale pumps on the bar with worthwhile brews and rotating guests.“

“In the centre of the village, as such a tourist trap in popular months, but with good reason, it has an attractive whitewashed tudor style outing and is lovely interior to match to either sup or dine, I think you can stay here too. It was such a hot day on my visit I sat out front, which gets plenty of sun when it's out. Robinson's brews available.“

“Whitewashed traditional pub facing east towards the car parks for the pretty and tourist heavy village of Hawkshead. Entry is through its stepped terrace garden and the bar on the left a little way in. Selection is not extensive but I found something local and new here on cask. It's a pretty enough place to sit and sup though.“

“New cafe style bar that's recently opened. Smart and modern, doesn't feel like you're in the Lake Dustrict. Beers are mostly local, four different Hardknotts on during my visit. Staff were friendly. Bar is in a seperate room you enter first, before heading inside to the drinking, where there are many cats. Fun place to visit.“

“A post office and store in Hawkshead that carries a surprisingly good selection of bottled beers. The majority of the selection is from local brewers, so expect to find a lot of bitters and golden ales, but there were a few interesting ones among them, like Granite and Rhetoric from Hardknott. There was also a small selection of craft beers available which was nice to see. A good option if you’re staying in the area.“

“Cozy pub with working fireplace. Selection is limited, but there are few cask ales including local ones from Hawkshead brewery. Not a bad place to stop for a pint or two.“

“Cosy pub with a decent menu and the possibility to stay the night,as we did. Food is decent, we had a wild boar burger and a fish and chips. It has 3 casks and some standard tap beers. Casks are local stuff, from bowness and the lakes. Nice atmospehere and staff.“

“A traditional pub in the centre of Hawkshead. The Queens Head is one of four pubs in Hawkshead village. It has a cottage-like feel both outside and in, with thick walls to ward off the worst of the Lakeland winter weather, low ceilings, wood panelled rooms, polished walnut tables, plate shelves and a flagstone floor in the bar. There are several rooms, including one at the back for formal dining. Service was friendly and, although there wasn’t the same choice of beer as in the neighbouring Kings Arms or Red Lion, there were a few cask ales - Cumbria Way, Build a Rocket Boys Elbow and Robinsons Double Hop when we were there. They have quiz nights and board games such as dominoes are also provided. (Visited 23 October 2011).“

Sun Inn (Bar)
MAIN STREET,
“A traditional Lakeland village pub where beer plays second fiddle to food and accommodation. From the outside the Sun Inn looks very traditional but once inside, up the steep slate steps, it’s like sitting on a shelf in a trendy box with light wood flooring and, unaccountably, the smell of a smokery. There are three taps – Theakston’s Best Bitter, Jennings Cumberland Ale and Loweswater Gold (ubiquitous in these parts) when we were there on a Sunday evening in October. We were the only people in the pub although the raised patio outside at the front was quite busy and it was obviously the place to be for itinerant young hotel staff. There’s a restaurant to one side and the menu looked good. (Visited 23 October 2011).“

“A nice village pub with four taps offering beers from the local area. Of the four pubs in Hawkshead, this would be my second choice after the Kings Arms, which is much busier. I suspect that this is where the locals come if they want a quiet pint in a less bustling atmosphere. The main room is long and low with banquettes upholstered in red and a red carpet. There are dark beams and a wood panelled bar, a small room at one end behind glass, shop-like windows and a dining room at the back. There’s also a patio to the side and, like the other pubs in the village, accommodation is also available. The service was friendly. (Visited 21 October 2011). “

“A lively village inn with an ever-changing selection of local brews and excellent food. We made the Kings Arms in Hawkshead our base for a short holiday in the Lake District and I was very pleased with our choice. Hawkshead is a picturesque village and it’s tiny but has four pubs, all offering accommodation. In my view, the Kings Arms is the best pub in town and it’s very popular with locals as well as visitors. It’s a nice old inn, right on the square, and has a cosy bar with an open fire and a sort of wooden totem pole propping up the beams of the ceiling. You can also sit outside under the parasols and, if it’s a bit nippy, turn on the coin operated patio heater! There’s a very good selection of mainly local beers which change on a daily basis, a shelf or two of single malt whiskies and nice range of soft drinks ideal for drivers. The food is exceptionally good and can be ordered in the bar or in the separate restaurant (although it’s wise to book a table as it can be very busy). The staff were friendly and efficient. All in all, highly recommended. (Visited 21-24 October 2011).“
