“Multi roomed thatched pub between the sea and salt water lake on a narrow strip of land. It's well known for fish and sea food meals, for which it is very popular. Pleasant outdoor seating overlooking the sea plus lots of choice indoors. There is a range of Otter Brewery beers on sale, no new beers for me but it's possible others might benefit. It's in a lovely setting and the food and beer are good.“

“On a spit of land between the sea and nature reserved where the short row of seafront buildings ends, this is a traditional pub clearly focusing on the tourist pound and has been split on the inside into a pub and a cafeteria style dining room. The pub section retains some character and there's a short row of local ales, all of which were regular brews from their respective micropubs. Food seems to be what the single day visitors come here for and as the place reeked of fish and chips when I was there I guess this is the most popular option. If the weather is good you can get away from this by sitting on the promenade picnic benches out front with views up the English Channel coast.“

“Visited for dinnner on Wednesday 27/04/16. The Start Bay Inn is a two roomed thatched pub located on a strip of land by the sea with a salt water lake on the other side. It is just along the beach from Slapton Sands - used for training for the D-Day landings and scene of a German U-Boat attack which killed some 900 allied troops, the 72nd anniversary of which happens to be on the very day I pen this review ! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exercise_Tiger The Start Bay Inn is famed for its fresh and plentiful sea food, Cod or Haddock comes in 4 sizes .... Small, Medium, Large and Jumbo. I opted for large at £10.95 and this was mahoosive ... I can only imagine Jumbo is some kind of Man Vs Food challenge ! As well as the house fish’n’chips there were a number of other seafood options on the specials board such as whole Dover Sole, Sea Bream, Monkfish and the like .. all at a reasonable price in and around the £13-£16 mark. Service was prompt and friendly and the fish lived up to expectations. One area that frustrated me a little, and caused me to drop the friendly service from a 9 to an 8, is that you have to order food at a different area (on the upper level) to your drinks which is a bit of a pain. At this business end 4 cask ales are on offer, all in good condition. The house beer ’Start Bay Bitter’ is a re-badge of Otter Bitter but the barman told me this straight away which is a welcome thing! This aside there was also Otter Ale, St Austell Tribute and an ever changing guest line which was Exeter - Lightmans on this visit. As with many places in this part of Devon, not a beer destination per se, but great food and you could well pick up a new tick from the guest line.“
