“The taproom is close to the town centre & the railway station. Bench seating inside plus some outside space, with food pop-ups on site most weekends. Around 10 beers pouring, mostly on keg. A nice space.“

“Visited on a Saturday afternoon. It was busy but the line up of cask beers made it worth it. Pub is split into two parts. A larger seated area to the right hand side and a saloon on the left hand side which has more taps and a larger serving area. Beers are displayed and updated on a TV screen above the bar. Lots of options including from Thornbridge, Redwillow etc. Condition was excellent. My only issue with the place was that it looked like it needs a clean down and there was no soap in the mens toilets which was a bit grim.“

“Traditional ale house on the long drag up from Mersey Square towards Manchester (on left hand side, half way up). From the main street entrance you arrive at the join between two rooms – both of which have access to the bar. The left hand one has long street side windows, but the one on the right leads to a veritable warren of rooms. Walls in most of them are painted bottle green, and have various items places on them (one room has a load of mirrors). One room has an opening onto a courtyard – which then leads to a large outdoor beer terrace. The bar on the left has omost of the many handpumps, but there are also a few in the bar on the right (and they are NOT duplicated). There’s about 14 in total. Luckily, there is a rolling display board giving details of what is available. Unfortunately, the vast majority fall under the description “golden ale” although there are a couple of darker ones. Food is limited to bar snacks. Is the a decent place deserving of being included on any visit to Stockport ? Most definitely. Is it the best pub in town ? Not in my opinion. “

“Fairly new craft beer venue / hipster hangout. It’s on Little Underbank and is accessed down steep steps from the overbridge by the Market Place. It is very small, with half a dozen tables struggling to fit in, but there are also tables on the street outside, plus more seating up a steep staircase (by the toilet). Large window, bare brick walls, imitation candle chandeliers and the bar straight ahead complete the picture. The main beer range is about 10 keg beers including a coule of Belgians, a German lager and a cider. The rest are various UK craft beers. I would say “fairly well known names”, but then again, I managed a brewery tick ! There are also some bottles, but they are only available to midgets ! Both the fridge for the beers (underneath the bar) and the bottle menu are very close to the floor. This is a decent place and well worth investigating. Just make sure you are prepared for the long haul back up to the top level ! “

“Opposite the Market Hall between Baker's Vaults and The Angel, which it is next to, this is a Mobberley Brewery concern with a modern-traditional appearance and design. They also serve food with a kitchen at the rear. Cask and keg are served here, with regulars and the latest special brews available across 3 pumps and many taps. Some outdoor seating is placed out front opposite the Market Hall.“

“A fine building amongst many in the immediate vicinity of the Market Hall, with a nice traditional-modern design since reopening. The bar at the front against the side wall sports a good number of cask pumps with the majority having Beartown brews on them. Some seats are put out front but the rear garden area has many more.“

“Facing the church on the far side of the Market Hall, this is a traditional pub which has been updated in recent times, but with thought - for example the original fireplace now has an imitation coal gas fire. Despite a row of half a dozen cask pumps at the bar there's nothing too exciting on offer, even the very locally produced Dizzy Blonde didn't quite taste right - the next best option was London Pride. This is very much a locals bar and shows football matches, two at a time when more than one are playing.“

“Opposite the Market Hall, this high ceiling corner pub with wooden floors has a tasteful well-kept traditional design with a small chain-pub feel to proceedings - all in a large open room with seats around a central service area, which sports a row of Robinsons and guest cask ales, backed up by some crafted bottled options.“

“On the north side of the M60 on the main road out of Stockportk, this is a classic old urban pub building with a more up-to-date decor than its age, but with plenty of traditional touches inside. A central bar separates two front rooms with the lion share of its cask and keg (mostly rotating) on the larger side of the bar to the left. All options are on a monitor above the entrance to the split-level third room that has a pool table and two darts boards. You'll find excellent drinking options here.“

“A sort of micropub but not quite, I really enjoyed my time here. An admirable selection of cask/keg beers, my pint of Moorhouses strong mild was superb. Very impressed that they stocked the right beer glass for nearly every Belgian beer they have, attention to detail. A lovely ambience and thoughtful service will ensure a return from me sometime in the future.“

“At the end of the row of units under the St Petersgate Bridge in the town centre, this is an atmospheric double floored pub with a cafe bar feel and rickety cafe style chairs to match. They concentrate on keg ales with over half a dozen choices, with a fair few regulars available from some of the funkiest of current brewers in the UK.“

“Not far before you reach the Market Hall on Petersgate, this twin floored shop unit conversion with a fair bit of depth to it has plenty of drinking space, a nice mix of cask and keg and even a small bottle shop area on the upper floor. The selection was varied in styles and strength.“

“Directly opposite the station car park on the west side of Stockport railway station, this is a locals bar on the edge of a housing estate with a traditional and slightly worn look. The bar on the left after its central entry sports 3 cask ales, all very often seen ones on my visit, although one of their keg lagers was from Manchester Union, which might be of interest to some if they continue to stock it.“

“Charming little bar on Stockport's historic (semi-pedestrianised) Little Underbank. Same ownership as the Breaking Glass bottle shop, so some excellent stuff on tap. Excellent addition to Stockport's beer scene, aiming for a different market to established places like the Magnet and Petersgate Tap.“

“It’s always sad to see a place whose glory days are well behind it, and is now down at heel. This place used to be a real ale magnet. Back in the early 1980s it was a Boddington’s pub (when that was a byword for good beer). Even a couple of years ago (when I last visited), although quiet, it still had a large and varied range of real ale. Now ? Well, read on … Getting to this pub is easy. It’s virtually underneath the railway viaduct which can be seen for miles around. Just make sure you are on the north side of the river … Enter directly off the street, and the bar is straight ahead. To the left and at the rear are three other rooms all done out in the same traditional style. Wooden panelling, crimson walls and upholstery, beer momentoes on walls, dark leather seat backs. On my visit there were 5 cask beers available (I don’t remember any blank hand pulls either). All were golden ales or IPAs – 4 from local Cheshire breweries. No sign of the 2 or 3 dark beers they always used to have. I have to admit that it was of pretty good quality. At least I didn’t have to worry about social distancing – I was the only customer at 3pm on a Saturday ! Finally, do NOT go out the door which is marked “Exit” ! Oh, recommendation. Visit while you can I guess. You will probably get a tick here, as I had to add my beer to RB ! “

“UPDATED JULY 2022 I’ve now been back and, in fairness got a better impression. Maybe this was due to the absence of Beartown beers ! There were now 6 real ales on handpump – of which 4 were from Tiny Rebel. (I had to add the one I had to RateBeer ). No complaints about the beer quality / temperature this time either. Also, the front windows have had Belgian beer decorations painted on them – complete with graffiti. This place is on the up. ORIGINAL REVIEW A newcomer to the crowded bar scene around Stockport Market Place. Historically a pub, but closed for 60 years (!), before being renovated in traditional style. Apparatently using a lot of materials salvaged from other closed pubs. On entry you need to turn right immediately. Bar is then on the left, with seating in 2 or 3 rooms beyond. Also, tables outside on the street, stools in the front window for people-watching, and a beer garden out back. Normally they have 4 or 5 real ales on tap, but on my last visit there were only 3 – all from Beartwon ! Unfortunately, I really don’t like Beartown beers, and the one I had was served FAR too cold. Thankfully, there IS more choice, as they have 4 German beers on tap (including a Dunkel) – and not the most obvious ones either. There is also a fridge with a small range of (mainly) Belgian bottles. Unusually the prices are shown above the fridge. Nice place – shame about the beer ! I’ll give it another try sometime – but will probably go for a bottle of Duchesse de Bourgoyne …“

“Small new venue that is the first decent pub you come across when heading from the station to the cluster around the Market Place. Just cown the road from the Wtherspoons as well. The local CAMRA bigwig vehemently denies it is a micropub (he doesn’t like them), but it is really, just a biggish one. Long and narrow, the bar is down one side with half a dozen or so wooden tables opposite. Décor is modern with blue walls adorned with various beer momentoes. There is also an upstairs, but I’be never been there. In terms of beer, there are six cask ales and four craft keg. Normally at least one beer from Hawkshead, and at least one dark beer, but otherwise can be anything from anywhere. Beers are listed on a blakboard at the rear. However, they are in various coloured chalks which make it very difficult to read ! Beer quality is normally very good – once they have been warmed up ! A pleasant friendly place, which makes a good first or last stop. [ On my last trip it was both !] “

“I visited for a beer tasting here with John Clarke (local Camra stalwart and Belgian/Dutch beer aficionado). Nice place with something for everyone on cask and keg. Based in Stockport town centre. Re-rate April 2022. Love this place. It's got a micro-pub feel but much too big to be classed as one. Two floors with a bottleshop upstairs. Six well kept cask plus four keg lines. An interesting variety of beers and breweries. The highlight was a Smoked BIPA on cask from Torrside.“

“Trad old boozer under the railway arches close to Stockport Bus Station. It's tatty now, a shadow of it's former self from the 1990's, when it was a vibrant & busy tickers paradise - but it's still going although with fewer (mostly cask) options available. Mostly local and northern beers on during my visit. The Magnet is a 7 minute walk away, go there instead.“

“Another absolute cracker in Stockport. Trad pub set up with two rooms, the lounge is less crowded than the public but it's hard to find a place to sit anywhere. And I can see why. Loads of cask (about 10) complemented by 6 keg. Not so much in bottle/can but who needs it with the draft selection. It's mainly UK, indy and sessionable although there are some crackers here. Cautiously giving Glen Affric's cream soda pale a go before moving on to stronger prey. It's convivial yet cosy, well-priced yet not afraid to push the boat out. Bordering on a destination.“

“Yes, yes, yes. This place has it going on. A beer-led pub from Cheshire's Mobberley which is modern yet welcoming, popular yet cosy. As for the beer, there's three cask and 8 keg, all but one from Mobberley (the guest is a Polly's beer so no complaints). For the record, not all of Mobberley's beers are exciting but their less available 'crafty' stuff is worth seeking out. As is this pub. Prices on the high side for Stockport but worth it.“

“One of those pubs that lives and breathes beer. The atmosphere feels a bit tired although it's friendly and comfortable. While they don't carry as many handpulls as they once did (13 reduced to 8), there is still lots of beer from traditional independent breweries such as Stockport and Elliswood to choose from. A bit of keg as well, although this pub is about cask really. Not a destination but easily included in any Stockport pub crawl.“

“Man there are some great bars in Stockport these days. The Petersgate Tap is an amazing venue, although it may be slightly eclipsed in the craft beer utopia of Greater Manchester. There are six cask handpulls and four keg fonts. While they tend toward the traditional (Hawkshead seems to be a favourite), I got a new USA state tick here (Rhode Island) so you never know what you might find. Close enough to craft beer pubs such as Remedy and Project 53.“

“It’S a Robbies pub Jim, but not as we know it ! One of the large number of pubs clustered around Stockport Market Hall – and one of the longer established ones. A late 19th century building in “gin palace” style, it is all one large room inside with high vaulted ceilings. But it feels more intimate, perhaps due to the two doors not leading directly into the room. Bar is central towards the rear, and there is plenty of standing space around it. Plenty of seating elsewhere though, with an emphasis on high stools and tables around the perimeter. Seating spills out onto the market square in front when the weather permits. There are 10 cask beers available. Those on the left are guest, with the 5 on the right being Robinsons. Titanic Plum Porter is always available, sometimes another titanic beer as well. Robinsons keg beers are available too. Food consists almost entirely of burgers, hot dogs and loaded fries. But they are very nice. Kitchen can be seen at the rear – together with washing up facilities ! The building itself is the most spectacular feature of the pub, but it has a nice vibe even if the beer selection isn’t outstanding.“

“This was the last pub for us on a coach trip of pubs in the area ending with 8 bars in Stockport, so my memory was hazy, but it was a great place that welcomed us with a smashing community spirit even to appreciating the singing from a few of our crowd. The last 3 pubs on our trip, Hope Magnet and here have made us want to book accomodation up here to have a weekend and be able to spend more time in these fantastic bars. We enjoyed our Abbeydale Reveller but wanted to try so many more. Will be back.“

“Another excellent pub that we unfortunately visited towards the end of a massive pub crawl of the area meaning we were unable to take advantage of the 12 cask and 14 tap beers on offer. Noted to try and get back up here at the end of May as I believe there is a local beer festival but an opportunity to do this pub justice. We did however enjoy the Track Sonoma beer, but will be back.“
