76 /100 Brew Shed (Bar) 108 CAROLGATE A small, friendly locals’ bar very much on the model of Beerheadz, with four casks, six kegs and no macros. There are only five tables plus three stools at the bar although I heard talk that they may be expanding.

58 /100 Dominie Cross (JDW) (Bar) 38 GROVE STREET A standard modern ‘spoons with the usual range plus a few extras which were on for their autumn festival. The staff were friendly and efficient although I did worry a little for my safety - there were signs on the patio warning of loose tiles on the roof of a gazebo which was very much in use; this in addition to a sign saying that shirts must be worn at all times. The mind boggles.

56 /100 Turks Head (Bar) 39 GROVE STREET The Turk’s Head is almost directly opposite the Wetherspoons and it’s an attractive building in the “Brewer’s Tudor” style. It’s not really a beer destination but they have five casks and the pub is listed by CAMRA as being of historical importance on the basis of its original 1930s interior.

42 /100 Olde Sun Inn (Bar) 14 CHAPELGATE The Olde Sun Inn is opposite St Swithin’s church and it’s sort of olde worlde on the outside, less so inside. The clientele were mainly workmen swigging macros. Doom Bar was also available.

56 /100 Ship Inn (Bar) WHARF ROAD A nice enough pub just a stone’s throw from the Idle Valley Tap but with no beers of particular interest - mainly Batemans.

70 /100 Idle Valley Tap (Bar) CAROLGATE An old pub but modern inside and very nicely done. There’s also a sunny patio by the main road. The service was friendly and there was a good beer selection - about eight casks and six kegs with a mixture of their own beers and others’. The beer was in good condition.

44 /100 Alberto's Bar (Bar) 29-31 ALBERT ROAD A sports bar on the road from the station into town. It serves breakfast and is nice enough but it’s not a beer destination.
