58 /100 Hallcross (Bar) 32 HALL GATE At the top end of the rising Hallgate this ground floor pub with its own beers from Stocks brewery as well as guest beers is perhaps only a notch or two above a spit and sawdust venue, however it is popular and draws a crowd, so is doing something right.Looks chain-like. |
62 /100 Don Valley Tap (Wool Market) (Beer Store) WOOL MARKET One of two bars in the converted Wool Market in the marketplace, which is now mostly stalls offering street food or drinks such as this one. Both bars are Don Valley with one just offering up keg from the brewer, but several cask are also available at the other. There's ample shared seating under the roof. |
68 /100 21 MARKET PLACE In the marketplace as you might expect and is a fairly simple one roomed affair with the bar against the back wall with six hand pumps across it. One or two bottles or cans are available too but that's about it. Pleasant surroundings and staff with local and regional microbrews at the wickets. |
58 /100 Chuckling Cheese Company (Grocery Store) UNIT 112, 113 FRENCHGATE CENTER In the shopping centre on the ground floor almost opposite Sainsbury's. Its sells Cheese, Cheese gifts and quite a lot of bottled ales, most of which you cannot peruse as they are on shelves behind the counter. If you are from the area though you'll recognise many as regular brews from local and regional microbrewers. They do have their own range though, brewed elsewhere obviously with a different style for each. |
40 /100 The Mallard (Bar) FOOD COURT FRENCHGATE SHOPPING CENTRE On the first floor of the shopping centre in Doncaster town centre, this is surely the place to go for Greene King ales when in town - three of its most popular regular brews were available on cask when I was there last week. I guess this place does well with families and food and it's in an odd place, but with late opening hours. Curiously it has outside seating space, but as it's in a shopping centre it's still indoors!!! How does that work? |
74 /100 The Draughtsman Alehouse (Bar) PLATFORM 3B, DONCASTER RAILWAY STATION Visited from 12 noon on Wednesday 06 October. Our group enjoyed beers both cask & keg from Vocation, Wishbone & Milestone amongst others. Understandably not a huge selection due to the small size of the premises, but well worth a visit - and if a group is meeting and coming from different points of orgin, there is no risk of getting lost. |
62 /100 The Leopard (Bar) 2 WEST STREET Visited early afternoon Wednesday 06 October. Not especially busy at the time. Our group drank beers from Abbeydale, Brains, Exmoor & Thornbridge - though nothing out of the ordinary from any of these breweries . |
40 /100 The Mallard (Bar) FOOD COURT FRENCHGATE SHOPPING CENTRE Visited late afternoon 06 October '21. Busy pub in the Shopping Centre next to the railway station. The T Taylor Landlord & Greene King Abbot were both found to be in good condition by our group. However this is not somewhere to visit for rates. |
66 /100 CUSWORTH LANE 2020 review
There's hand sanitiser on the way in. You can only sit outside. Pick a free table. They will come to you and take your name & phone number. They will take your order after that. You can only pay contactless
2019 review
4 cask beers, 2 of their own. 6 tap beers. 5 can and bottled beers. A couple of ciders. Half a pint of 1086 was 1.70. free WiFi. Lovely old building. The entrance is unsigned and is to the right of the main building of Cusworth Hall |
58 /100 The Gate House (JDW) (Bar) PRIORY WALK, HIGH STREET Located in a courtyard just off High Street. One-roomed, medium sized Wetherspoon. Ten cask ales on display, two of them new to us. Rather quiet early on a Friday, brexit morning. Well valued breakfast. Polite service. (Visited with Finn 31.01.2020). |
64 /100 Don Valley Tap (Wool Market) (Beer Store) WOOL MARKET Altogether seven of their own beers available at our stay, four on kegs and three on cask. Located close to one of the entrance, inside the airy Wool Market. No thirds, beers served in plastic glasses. Friendly service. (Visited with Finn 30.01.2020). |
68 /100 1 SUNNY BAR Street corner pub next to the wool market. A freehouse offering 10 kegs and five cask ales, the draught beers can be bought in thirds. A beer fridge to the right of the servery. Dark lit with a rock attitude to the ambience. Used as a live venue, decorated with gothic rock and Halloween-like posters. No food at our stay, not sure about if they still have a kitchen. Polite service. (Visited with Finn 28.01.2020). |
76 /100 7 YOUNG STREET Quite well stocked brewpub with six ciders, six hand-pumps, quite a few cans, kegs and bottles. Four of their own beers among the cask ales, some of the also available in bottles. Third options. No music at our stay. Friendly service and a local feel to the ambience. Live music and quiz events now and then. The brewer plant can be seen on the way to the toilets. (Visited with Finn 28.01.2020). |
62 /100 The Draughtsman Alehouse (Bar) PLATFORM 3B, DONCASTER RAILWAY STATION Straight out of the train from Leeds, and into this small sized station bar on platform 3B. Old school layout with the servery to the rear offering three rotating, well-kept cask ales and five more on kegs, a few bottles and cans as well. Has got some chairs and tables outside on the platform. Friendly and welcome service. (Visited with Finn, 28.01.2020). |
56 /100 The Gate House (JDW) (Bar) PRIORY WALK, HIGH STREET One floor typical ´spoons. |
54 /100 Don Valley Tap (Wool Market) (Beer Store) WOOL MARKET Inside a modern market. 6 of their own beers on. 5 others. |
70 /100 1 SUNNY BAR Rock and Roll pub without a kitchen, but ok selection on cask & keg. |
72 /100 7 YOUNG STREET Small cozy taphouse with 12 casks. 6 ciders & 4 of their own beers + 2 guests. 12 kegs as well. Some bottle & fans. |
60 /100 The Draughtsman Alehouse (Bar) PLATFORM 3B, DONCASTER RAILWAY STATION Tiny place. 3 casks. 5 kegs. Some bottles & cans. |
38 /100 The Mallard (Bar) FOOD COURT FRENCHGATE SHOPPING CENTRE Not sure why this place is on Ratebeer. It has only 3 craft beer taps and they are nothing special. You're better off going to any of the other pubs on Ratebeer. Free wifi |
60 /100 The Mallard (Bar) FOOD COURT FRENCHGATE SHOPPING CENTRE Nice pub inside the shopping mall next to the train station in Doncaster
If Draughtsman Alehouse at platform 3 is closed
This one is quite ok
More or less like a spoon pub
|
74 /100 The Draughtsman Alehouse (Bar) PLATFORM 3B, DONCASTER RAILWAY STATION Excellent small cost place at the station
Platform 3B. That’s the place we all go
Quite nice selection. So just be happy if the train is delayed!

66 /100 Don Valley Tap (Wool Market) (Beer Store) WOOL MARKET July 2020 virus update.
If you want to drink inside, you need to book ahead. I just turned up, so you have to sit outside. There's a desk at the entrance to register with track and trace. My phone couldn't scan it so I had the option to leave my name number and email address at the Don Valley tap. I had a half and said outside.
July 2019
Usually quite busy when I'm here. There are 4 or 5 staff but it's a small bar. They have 5 casks and 4 taps of their own beers at 1.50 to 1.75 a half pint depending on the abv. You can order food from other stalls. You can sit inside or outside depending on the weather. Glug, Marketplace Alehouse, The Queen and red Lion are all a minute or 2's walk away. |
66 /100 Hallcross (Bar) 32 HALL GATE Covid-19 update
My 1st time in a UK pub this year. My closest pub. There's a clear sign at the entrance on a table saying please wait to be shown to a table. There's also hand sanitiser on the table. The friendly barmaid took my name and phone number and pointed me to a table, saying come to the bar when I'm ready to order. There are perspex screens at the bar. Surprised (nicely) that a pint of their own beers is still only £2.50 a pint :-) I will be back since they care about craft beer and my safety!
June 2019 review
Nice craft beer place with 3 of their own beers on tap (although 1 beer wasn't available). No wifi. A beer fridge as well with about 25 beers. A pint of their own beer was a reasonable 2.50. Worth it if you want to try their own beers but the Doncaster brewery has a better guest tap and bottled selection |
80 /100 The Draughtsman Alehouse (Bar) PLATFORM 3B, DONCASTER RAILWAY STATION Really cute little bar on Platform 3b, three ales on and my pints of a hoppy ale were rather excellent. Handy place to pop into whilst waiting for your train, thoroughly recommended. |
62 /100 The Plough (Bar) 8 WEST LEITH GATE Would largely agree with the previous reviews, classic old pub with ori ginal features but rather disappointing on the ale front. My pint of pale ale was mediocre and I couldn't finish it, wasn't tempted to try any of the other beers. Pleasant pub, however lacking somewhat in the beer department. |
68 /100 Chuckling Cheese Company (Grocery Store) UNIT 112, 113 FRENCHGATE CENTER 21/08/2020
Back open again.
Primarily a food place as the name suggests but they do have a selection of about 60 bottled/canned UK beers. Best beer selection in Doncaster I could find. It's in the Frenchgate shopping centre. You can use their free wifi, |
64 /100 The Red Lion (JDW) (Bar) 37–38 MARKET PLACE Typical spoons pub. Quite long though and on the market place. 12 craft beer taps with one being a cider. Free WiFi. Close to the market deli and the Queen pub. |
66 /100 The Gate House (JDW) (Bar) PRIORY WALK, HIGH STREET Covid review
There's had sanitiser on the way in. there's a form to fill in if you want to. At the bar there are spots on the floor to show you where to queue. i was in the wrong place and one of the staff helpfully pointed me to the right place :-) You queue at the till and order there (or use their app). They prefer contactless but you can still use cash. I couldn't see any other patrons wearing a mask other than myself. There are only screens between tables at the back and that's where i sat. Wifi wasn't working today which is unusual
2019 review
A decent spoons with plenty of space. 10 craft beer taps including 1 cider meaning there's usually a couple of ticks for me. |
82 /100 The Draughtsman Alehouse (Bar) PLATFORM 3B, DONCASTER RAILWAY STATION A great little place that looks like it's been on platform 3b since the age of steam. The beers seem as transitory as clientele, though there is usually a cask stout or porter. Some bottled and canned crafts beers too. Small terrace on the platform and a neat single room inside. Food is pork pies. |
58 /100 The Gate House (JDW) (Bar) PRIORY WALK, HIGH STREET In a modern build pedestrianised courtyard area in the town centre, this large almost square Wetherspoon is pleasant enough, but it's quite a functional place and I'm guessing it's probably a hub of nightlife in the evening when its outdoor seating probably becomes one huge smoking area! Traditional pub furnishings on the inside and a long bar on the right after you walk in, there's also an alcove for the dartboard so a team probably plays out of this venue. There's two rows of cask pumps, although the only new beers for me were in their current craft can selection in the fridges. |
64 /100 The Red Lion (JDW) (Bar) 37–38 MARKET PLACE I first attempted to come to this pub in 2015, but it was under a refurbishment at the time, which accounts for its very plush, slightly boutique look, probably to compliment the hotel above. Although not a wide pub on the edge of the market square, it's pretty deep with a long bar sporting two rows of ale pumps with a few guests along the left hand wall once you've ventured a little way into the venue. There's craft keg and craft cans and bottles available too and the beer festival ales twice annually. |
78 /100 The Draughtsman Alehouse (Bar) PLATFORM 3B, DONCASTER RAILWAY STATION On the middle platform section of the station in a small room, it's a tight affair with a seemingly ever changing clientele obtaining a drink before or after a train journey. There's only a handful of seats in the square room, which has a bar in its far corner packing in a row of cask ales, some cans and bottles in a small fridge, and several keg options that can be bought in thirds. I was able to buy a couple of these and take them on to the train in plastic cups when I ran out of pub time. Doncaster station is a classic red brick building so there's no shortage of ambiance drinking here whether your using public transport or not. |
52 /100 The Plough (Bar) 8 WEST LEITH GATE Next to a Greene King pub, this place was the only one I didn't find anything new to drink in its selection on an afternoon in Doncaster, nevertheless it does have three cask ales, albeit regular ones you've probably seen before. It's always disappointing to walk in to a pub and see Deuchars as part of its selection! It's a lovely old pub though with separate front and back rooms, with the latter very cosy in classic style. The front is more traditional 'bar' where the darts takes place in the corner, and here they proudly display the impressive trophies the pub team has won over the years. |
72 /100 7 YOUNG STREET In a shop unit on a dead end street just where the Civic Quarter begins, this single room micropub with a bar against the back wall has the perfect mix of its own ales and guest casks. There's also plenty of real ciders available here, making it the best place for these that I visited on my tour of Doncaster pubs. Tables and chairs are small so they pack a few in. There's also a piano immediately on the right of the entrance so feel free to sit and play here if it takes your fancy. There were four ales from the Brewery, which is brewed in the back room, which you will walk through if you use the toilet or go to the upper drinking room. A taster tray can be bought here. |
54 /100 The White Swan (Bar) 34 FRENCHGATE On the cusp of the commercial centre, where the ring road meets the bridge over the river, this is the last building on the pedestrianised street. It's now painted white as per its name and is split level inside, with the bar just on the upper part a few metres inside. There's two hand pumps carrying local cask ales, possibly from Don Valley, and probably from Jolly Boys. Beyond this the tables and chairs in a corridor type area look more suited to dining, and pub food is served here. The whole place does look a little worn though. |
72 /100 1 SUNNY BAR On the corner opposite the market building in the square, this wooden furnished bar looks and is decorated like a goth rock pub. It possibly is, but I was there in the daytime when it was very quiet, and only a couple of souls in. The decors really interesting for a visitor like myself, and there's enough cask and keg to you here for a while. The latter is available in thirds and is from craft brewers, not macros. There's also a fair number of outdoor seats too, so if the weather allows it's a fine place to people watch in the square. |
62 /100 The Leopard (Bar) 2 WEST STREET In a residential area immediately south of the train station, this pub has a beautiful classic pub exterior that should be listed if it isn't already. Inside it's certainly had a refurbishment or two as it's fairly modern, certainly chain looking, but by no means unwelcoming. Entering through doors on the corner, the pub runs at a right angle to the bend in the road, and as such there's two rooms to frequent, either left or right, with the left providing access to the rear outdoor area which was being used mainly by smokers on my visit. There's a lot of macro beers here, but six hand pumps offer up a very good selection of cask ales and you can buy a taster tray too. There's three hand pumps on either bar in either room, but what's not in the section you frequent is chalked up on a small board on the bar. Shows Sky Sports on television screens throughout. |
70 /100 The Draughtsman Alehouse (Bar) PLATFORM 3B, DONCASTER RAILWAY STATION Only doing home delivery at the moment. www.thedraughtsmanalehouse.co.uk. I will try and update this entry when they re-open
Nice small place on platform 3b. 5 keg beers and 3 on cask. They have about 20 bottles and cans. Most beers are around d 2 Pounds for a half pint. They do coffee gin and wine too. No free wifi but you can use the stations free LNER wifi. You can also sit outside but then you will be given a plastic glass. They also do pints and 1/3 pints too. Last orders is half an hour before they close |
74 /100 The Draughtsman Alehouse (Bar) PLATFORM 3B, DONCASTER RAILWAY STATION Changing trains in Doncaster and stepped off the train onto platform 3B right outside this place. Had to pop in for a quick one and really enjoyed it. A few local beers on cask and perhaps half a dozen kegs. It's a beautiful room and the guys working were very friendly. A real gem. |
70 /100 The Draughtsman Alehouse (Bar) PLATFORM 3B, DONCASTER RAILWAY STATION Visited on 24th June 2017. Micropub on Platform 3 at Doncaster, has a little area out on the platform plus a single room and bar inside a converted station building. 3 cask ales, picked up a new one here, from local brewers and a few kegs and bottles. Service was friendly, prices decent. I liked this place and as it’s really handy when changing trains I’ll probably be back! |
78 /100 The Draughtsman Alehouse (Bar) PLATFORM 3B, DONCASTER RAILWAY STATION Opened late April 2017, making great use of a fairly small room on Platform 3B on Doncaster station. Compact inside, plus some extra chairs and tables outside on the platform. Served 3 cask ales - from small local brewers when visiting - plus around 8 kegs and a selection of other drinks. Sadly on this first visit I only had about 25 minutes between trains but it’s great asset for Doncaster station this, and will be sure to be back again on future travels to Yorkshire. |
72 /100 The Leopard (Bar) 2 WEST STREET April 2021 post lockdown 3 update
It was very busy about 4pm but when I came back about 19:30 it was only half full. There's someone to greet you and make sure you check in with the NHS app. There's also hand sanitiser. You can order online (with a 5% discount) or they will come to your table. There's free wifi. You are meant to wear a mask while moving around or to go to the toilet. There are no heaters outside so you might want to wrap up warm. Price for a pint of craft beer on tap is now about 3.40 Quid
Nice place with 7 craft beer taps. Discount for Camra members. |
68 /100 1 SUNNY BAR temporarily closed. Don't seem to be doing delivery. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for any news. I'll try and update this if/when they re-open https://www.facebook.com/theQueenDonny
Now 10 taps and 5 cask taps and open 6 days a week. Good selection of mostly Yorkshire beers. A bit expensive though. Around 2 pounds for a half pint |
66 /100 21 MARKET PLACE 2020 Covid review
Opening hours seem stale now. You can message them by Facebook to reserve a table. They have only 4 taps of real ales but no bottle any more. Expensive for Donny, 1.80 a half or 3.60 a pint.
old review
Opening hours seem to be erratic. Been here twice and it was closed. Finally made it. 10 taps and lots of bottles, great selection. Prices are high for Doncaster. 3.40 a pint or so. Plenty of ticks. |
74 /100 1 SUNNY BAR Restrictive hours until a full time licence has been given. the 10 taps include strongbow & Guinness, but definitely 7 are more unusual. The 5 cask were a mixture of local & national beers. Staff were happy to serve tasters. There was live music on Saturday evening. Owned by the same people as Marketplace Alehouse & Deli. |
54 /100 The Plough (Bar) 8 WEST LEITH GATE Only 3 guest taps. Nice enough place. Very expensive for Donny at 1.50 a half |
