snowcrash000 (2268) - Cologne, GERMANY - APR 22, 2023UPDATED: APR 22, 2023 Pours a deep, dark mahogany coloration with a ruby red sheen when held up to the light and a medium, creamy, lasting head. Smells of roasted, caramel malt, chocolate and lighter coffee and licorice, with some herbal accents coming through as well. Taste is a great balance of roasted, caramel malt, chocolate, coffee and lighter peppery spice, dark fruit, with notes of fig and raisin, as well as hints of citrus zest, licorice, tobacco and herbal notes reminiscent of rosemary and bog myrtle. Finishes bittersweet, with some chocolate, peppery spice, licorice and herbal accents lingering in the aftertaste. Full mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.
This makes for a very interesting and well-balanced brew with a great harmony of sweet, roasted and bitter, as well as spicy, herbal and slightly fruity accents. The herbal additions certainly come though noticeably, lending a very different character to this beer and fitting in well with the peppery spice and licorice, perhaps adding to it, being reminiscent of bog myrtle, which has a certain anise note to me. The Citra hops also add a subtle hint of lemon peel, which somehow fits in nicely here. Overall, this makes for a very unique drinking experience that feels rich, well-balanced and full of character.

kuokkanen (11) - Riga, LATVIA - NOV 28, 2021UPDATED: NOV 28, 2021 Obscure herbs and bitter hops. Armed and dangerous. Pitch black, but turns red against light, like a bad omen. This is Riga Black Balsam reborn as beer. The aroma has that herb liqueur vibe. Pairs well with doom metal.

O- I love bottles were I can't read a lick of the language on it. Makes me contemplate a bit more. I would call this more traditional ale / catch all than Imperial Stout. I almost get an absinthe flavor from this. Lots of herbal anise flavor. Yarrow can be deadly I hear, perhaps this is going to take me out or at least put me out for the fleeting hours of 2020! Unique but not a huge fan. I should've saved and shared this one.
