COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Russian Imperial Oatmeal Stout. If thrown in the old jailhouse, this is the beer we cook. Jailhouse Brew is complex and opaque like the story that got us locked up. It’s coffee, smoke and body salts behind iron bars, and it’s strong enough to get us out again.

UPDATED: NOV 30, 2023 The dark brother of Blimey, an IPA brewed in collaboration between Belgian Slaapmutske and Estonian Vaat – with this oatmeal stout too being the combined work of both client brewers, and apparently already circulating on the market since early 2015. Bottle at Hotel Columbo. Thick and frothy, dense, membrane-like lacing, yellowish beige head on an ink black beer. Aroma of black coffee and coffee grounds, black pepper, burnt toast, dried blackcurrants, unsugared black chocolate, dark green tree leaves, nutmeg, bayleaf, hint of shoe polish-like solvent. Dark-fruity, quite clean onset, burnt currants and old raisins, quite dryish with medium carb and oily mouthfeel; bitter black chocolatey and strongly toasty core with a strong old-fashioned roasted bitterness filling the mouth, supported by leafy hops and warming, ‘jenever’-ish alcohol. The velvety smoothness and subtle underlying cereally sweetness of the oats are clearly recognisable. Vague nuttiness echoes at the back – along with a deep coffee-ish roastedness. ‘Basic’ strong oatmeal stout without any of the frills one sees in stouts all too often these days – feels obsolete, but I love a good oldskool roasty-bitter stout so I enjoyed this one.
