ineedbeer (3848) - California, USA - OCT 5, 2016
Poured from a 750 ml bottle from 2011; another back of the cellar find. Aroma is fairly malty with some caramel, light toasted bread notes, candi sugar and honey. Some light to medium guava notes. Hints of citrus and other tropical fruits. Light notes of oxidation. Pours a slightly hazy, copper color with a medium large, medium thick and frothy, slightly tan head that recedes very quickly to the edges where a small, thin clump lingers for a bit. No lacing and small legs. Flavor is slightly tart with a moderate sweetness. Sweet malt notes are caramel, then honey, candi sugar and toasted bread. Medium light guava notes with lighter citrus and pineapple. Hints of other tropical fruit as well. Oxidation notes are light, but the guava has faded a bit. Medium bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, an alright beer but this much age has pushed it past its prime. Hopefully I don’t have too many more of these old cellar finds, but I’m pretty sure there are another couple cases of this old stuff lurking. A bit more guava as the beer warms and opens up. Hints of alcohol. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, an alright beer but past its prime. The fruit notes are fading and becoming muddled. Some light oxidation characteristics are also creeping in. Definitely better as a younger beer.

75 cl bottle shared. Pours hazy orange with a very beautiful creamy off white head. Aroma is sweet malts, honey, tropical fruits (obviously guava), oranges, some yeast. Not very strong but beautifully complex. Taste is similar with a sweet start, honey notes and tropical fruits again. Fruit not to strong. Nice yeasty acidic dry finish with some bitterness. Sweet, almost sticky aftertaste. Excellent fruity take on belgian style.

"i was so NOT expecting tart and sour in the aroma and flavor. what a pleasing surprise this beer was. the unique sweetness and flavor of guava played a 2nd fiddle (maybe 1B) to the tart funky belgian base. A delicious unique brew!"

Lost my notes on this. Shared by Stevencon @ Proof, upstairs - thanks. Well-aged body. Sour - aroma and flavor. Good label on a wine bottle. Need to re-rate some day, as it is I’m trying to recall a night’s drinking after a few.
