Botella bought in the "The DANSHAKU LOUNGE" at the Hokkaido Nanaecho Road pit stop ("station"). Deep dark brown colour, medium light brown head. Sweet like soft toasty aroma with chocolate notes. Good palate. Soft toasty malty chocolate flavour, reminds me of a milk stout.

Onuma IPA
Onuma IPA 8% / 55 IBU, at a food fair in Fukuoka, from the brewery stand on tap. Hazy amber color, delicious moderately balanced (slight skew to bitterness) IPA with a caramel background flavor. Smooth bitterness with the traditional (older style) American IPA citrus aroma. Great with raw beef and uni sushi. Seems to have been better fresh on draft than most of these can reviews.

Can. Nose of grass, bread, yeast, and a sliver of citrus. Hazy light yellow color. Grain, bread, citrus, and very gentle bitterness through mid palate and final. Thin body, soft carbonation. Decent, refreshing stuff.

Can. Light malty nose, some grain and grass and light yeast. Flavors of bread, gentle roast malt, caramel, light bittering hops, and more yeast. Thin body. Definitely in the neighborhood of an altbier, but not the best one on the block.

Can. Fruity nose, with apples, grapes, and yeast. Very thin malt flavor, some ripe fruit, citrus, a bit of sourish tang in mid palate. A bit rough from mid palate to finish. Thin body. Underattenuated and poorly made. Not remotely close to an IPA.

Onuma Simple Session Saison
I actually think that the correct name for this is "Single Saison", could not find anything online about "Simple Session Saison" - and it does feel as the same beer. Pours clear golden, probably not exactly how a saison should look like - but I am not that concerned. Sour notes in the nose, together with malty and yeast spice aromas. tastes actually pretty sour and yeasty. More like a hefeweizen? In mid-taste hops kick in and bitterness lasts for pretty long, lingering and dry bitterness in the aftertaste. For me this beer feels more like a hoppy hefeweizen, not so much as a saison. Overall, interesting attempt with hops and at the end not really bad (but also not really great).

Pours hazy and brownish, slight film of foam. Aroma has some grassy hops, grass that has not been yet cut and is still growing. Winter apples. Subtle sweet undertone hints a malty base. Some sourness? Taste has some numb bitterness, mainly you feel malts but as the balance is not the greatest, everything feels sort of all over the place. Aftertaste turns sweeter and some fruits come out, finally. Sweet gummy bears. Total fail as an IPA, otherwise still meh.

Pours a bit hazy, brown and with a thin white film. Light caramel and some grass in the aroma. Flavour is slightly sour, malty background is strong but I am somewhat disturbed with that sourness. Not the greatest balance with hops, feels messy, . Finish is dry and malty, not bad but could probably have a bit more depth.

Onuma Kölsch
Pours almost clear yellow, a bit of white foam. Aroma is fresh and grassy, some biscuits and a bit of grain. Taste is crisp, fresh bread dominates, clean and completely malt-forward. Simple session beer - but much better than I expected.

Can from the shop at Hakodate ropeway. Sipping it watching the sunset couldn’t distract me from its weaknesses. The balance isn’t quite right. Just too sweet and just too bitter without much floral it citrus to cut it. It’s ok but if you had called this an imperial lager not IPA I might have forgiven some of the niggles. Still, better than drinking Asahi with a nice view....

I’m not entirely sure what this was, but at 8% and with the phenols it seemed like they were going Belgian or something. Lighter amber with haze. Medium head. Sweeter, bit of bubblegum, touch of alcohol, similar palate. Sweetish but there’s some balancing bitterness though it would probably get cloying if you drank a pint.

Draught at Kuohzei. Dark malt with maybe a minimal chocolate character, fairly thin, hints of cherry and licorice. Considering how forgiving that style can be, this is not very impressive, drinkable at best.

Tap at Hibiya Fest. Chocolate, malty, light roast, bit of sweetness, cocoa, light bitterness. Surprisingly good stuff or maybe it was the previous beers that made it feel like that.

Can from Chitose Airport. First off be aware, this is nowhere near an IPA, it’s more of an English Strong Ale or a Light Barley Wine. Pours a clear amber with a nice soapy white head that lingers with great lacing. Aromas of caramel, peach, cinnamon and alcohol. Taste is more of the same with average carbonation and a warming finish. Very interesting if not considered an IPA.

Can from Kyoto Isetan. 5% It pours a clear brown with a thin beige head that vanished fast. The nose is grainy, nutty, a bit buttery and somewhat cake like. Med-thin with a scratchy carbonation. The flavor is nutty, a bit metallic, a touch buttery, bitter and grainy. Like the Amao, not terrible per se but not all that good either. Then again I don’t care for the alt style so much.

8% I first had this brewery at the GJBF a few weeks ago and was not impressed so when I saw this bottle at Kyoto Isetan I decided to give them another shot. Served in a pint glass it is pretty clear honey amber with a thick foamy head that leaves some spotty lacing and a creamy looking film on the surface of the beer. Malts, lemon and some ethanol booziness, almost varnish or nail polish? The taste is rough, bitter pine, dirt, a bit ashy, earthy malts an alcohol heat burning down my throat in the finish. Having poured the dregs into the glass I get some butterscotch... I agree with KyotoLefty, this isn’t all that IPA like not even an English IPA, it would be more of an Old Ale or something. Bizarre but better than the kolsch I tried, this one seems confused but with some work could be interesting. Passable.

Onuma Kölsch
On tap at the GJBF in Osaka 2014. Clear light gold with a thin filmy head. Malty, a bit rough and too fruity in my opinion for a Kölsch. Light bodied, kind of watery. Horrible skunky hoppy flavor, yuck. Not my thing it reminds me of a light struck grolsch. Not sure what was going on here but this beer was subpar.

Backlog. Can, enjoyed in 2008. Cloudy amber color. Big, uneven head. Aroma’s: sweet fruit, sugar, herbal. Flavor is moderate sweet, fruity. Medium bodied. Long finish, starting dry and fruity, eventually with a light bitterness. More a triple than an IPA.

Who nicked the hops? Malty red ale with low hopping. Welcome to the world of Japanese Alts. Straight forward, bready, caramel and very soft finish. Stuck in first gear unfortunately.

330 ml bottle. Golden and crystal clear. Medium-sized white fine-laced head that clings to the glass. Clean and fruity aroma with hints of lemon. Refreshing citrusy, mostly lemon, flavours upfront. Watery texture. Very refreshing. Clean malt balanced by quite a bit of acidity. Hops are there but hides well. Easy-drinking golden ale. Not exactly a kölsch though.

Can shared by larsga. A finger of beige, dense head upon a clear, orangey-golden body. Fusel alcohols up front. Then a light citrus scent, and a whiff of cardboardy hops. Restrained malt body, with some alcohol-soaked grains. Distinct, but kind of edgy hop bitterness. Sharp and citrus-zesty fruitiness. Medium to light body. Mouth-drying. Alcohol dominated finish. Not an IPA for me, this one.

From a can bought next to the brewpub. Darkish amber color, with orange. Cloudy, tall head. Aroma of yeast, amber malt, some dark fruits. Not an IPA aroma. Not enough hops. Tastes more like an old ale. Smooth and round, strong, with dark fruits, a bit sweet, ok hops but not outstanding, cherryish, port-like. Alcohol heat. This is nowhere near what I would call an IPA. It is a barley wine or an old ale. It is rather sweet, without the strong hops, relying mostly on alcohol for balance. Pretty decent, though.
