Glossop Summer Bitter
Cask, at Newark Beer Festival, May 2004. Notes recovered from a recently unearthed old notebook. Gold colour. A little better than the Fletchers Campaign from the same brewery that I tasted at the same festival, but not much. In retrospect, I probably shouldn’t have risked this but I thought the first beer must have been an off batch. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case. Although the aroma did not have the acetone that I found in the Fletchers Campaign, this was replaced by a very grainy, sweaty, under-brewed malt character. And there was the same sourness in the flavour suggesting infection problems at the brewery. Drinkable (just) but hardly enjoyable.

Glossop Fletchers Campaign Bitter
Cask, at Newark Beer Festival, May 2004. Notes recovered from a recently unearthed old notebook. This brewery had quality control issues from the outset and only lasted a few months. Those quality control issues were certainly on display here. It looked OK - regulation amber colour but there was a bad petrol and acetone taint in the flavour, followed by a rather sour fruit flavour. Don’t know whether they had an infection issue at the brewery or just didn’t do enough homework before releasing the beer but there was certainly something wrong here. As a point of interest, the kit (and the casks) ended up at Olfabrikken.

Glossop Dexters Best Bitter
A full, biscuity, hoppy, well constructed brew which drinks beyond it’s strength. They have now closed, maybe due to consistence problems highlighted here! (Cask from Sheffield)

Glossop Summer Bitter
cask, old moot hall, nottingham. the second beer from this newish brewery on tap at the local within days of the first being withdrawn. as i remember this was too. both were really not nice, almost cidric with metal and sulpher thrown in. would recommend a taste before embarking on a pint. of course it could have been a bad batch, or bad transport (certainly nothing to do with the pub) because both beers tasted similarly strange. having thought about it, i find it hard to imagine a new brewer would thing it was suitable to sell in the state it was in, thus giving me hope that it was a rogue batch, so do not take my word as gospel.

cask at my local, the old moot hall inn in nottingham. I find it hard to criticise new brewers because it is a difficult business.Hhowever, this beer was awful, almost tasted like cider. Also tried the ’summer bitter’ but that too tasted the same, both were taken off the bar.

Glossop Fletchers Campaign Bitter
Cask conditioned - handpump - Malt Shovel Northampton. Golden coloured bitter with a sour aroma. The taste is also on the sour side and is a struggle to get down. A bit of a mish mash

Glossop Dexters Best Bitter
Bright bottled at Cambridge Fest. Fresh notes: "Refreshing session bitter - light amber. Rancid melon or Indian fruit? Score 2.5" And that’s about how I feel about it now. The hops are perhaps more noticable, and there’s a bit of grease. It’s not a great beer. Aroma is that Indian fruit again - the one whose name I can’t remember. Just remembered: mango.

Glossop Fletchers Campaign Bitter
Gravity at the Rail Ale Beer Festival, Barrow Roundhouse, Chesterfield. Rather unpleasant beer, teeming with questionable vegetable flavours - beetroot, lettuce and sugared radish. A strong flavour all the way down the thraot. Acidic and turpentine. Sandy brown colour, no head and a chocolate aroma.
