willisread	3.1 Susukino Yubari Coal Mine Dark Lager Can from Chitose Airport. Pours a deep brown with a modest beige head. Some dark fruit on the nose with some roasted malt and smoked prosciutto. There is a hint of smoke on the nose. Fairly dry with a little fruity sourness that comes out on the palate as well. Body is quite thin. Tastes like schwartzbier in 2015. willisread	2.2 Susukino Pilsener On tap at Tsuki to Taiyo Brewing. Clear straw-gold with a nice big pillowy white head. Nose has some grass, wet grain, cheese and butter notes. PotjeBier	3.4 Susukino Yubari Coal Mine Dark Lager 35 cl can, souvenir from trip to Japan. Black color. Light brown head, not too long retention. Aroma’s: roasted malts/ground coffee, drop/licorice. Flavor is light sweet, roasted. Thin mouthfeel. Finishes with roast, slightly dry and light bitterness. Nice enough. Tuesday, May 20, 2014
jinroh	3.6 Susukino Yubari Coal Mine Dark Lager 350 ml can from The Garden, Jiyugaoka. Pours pitch black - of coal black. Has a nice beige head at first but it reduces soon. What remains is creamy and fluid, leaving nice lacings on the glass. Aroma has some roast with dark fruits, maybe dried plums. Taste is also nicely creamy, some roast malts, brewed nicely into a dry beer - that has a lot of flavour for the meagre 5% abv it packs. Bitter and charred aftertaste, remains for some minutes. KansaiBeerLvrs	3.4 Susukino Yubari Coal Mine Dark Lager Can from Kita Recipe in Umeda. From Susukino Beer in Hokkaido comes this black pour with a beige head with rusty accents and ok lacing. Served in a snifter it gives off an aroma of soft chocolate. Medium-light bodied with an energetic carbonation giving it a spritzy mouthfeel. The taste is roasty, bitter dark chocolate & cacao beans. The finish is somewhat ascerbic giving a kind of mild puckering palate cleansing effect. A decent enough schwarzbier and much better than their pilsner. Monday, April 28, 2014

GoufCustom	3.3 Susukino Yubari Coal Mine Dark Lager 330ml can as “Susukino Yubari Coal Mine Black Beer” bought at CitySuper in New Town Plaza, Shatin during the Hokkaido Food Fair Promotion. Clear opaque cola-black colour; Half-finger head and beige foam which last for 1 minute; Small lacing and notable soft carbonation; Light aroma of roasted malt, caramel, vanilla, cream, black coffee, smoke and straw; Light sweet taste of roast dark malt, black coffee, very light toffee and dark chocolate, nuts, cola, faint liquorices, light citrus and grassy hops; Mid to light body, slick but thin palate; Taste profile is dominated by light roasted malt in a pretty thin, nutty body, not watery but has some cola flashes here and there. Toffee and chocolate taste is also light but solid enough. Creaminess is only manifested in nose but not in taste; Hoppiness is very mild strawy nose, faint liquorice, feather light citrus grassy taste, and detectable bitterness for an empty finish; Slightly dry after taste, fairly easy to mouth. Comments: This one is somewhere between a Schwarz and a Stout - it has a fairly decent, creamy stout-like aroma, yet its taste and body is pretty mono , flat and thin to stay in the Schwarz territory. I say this is slightly better than most Euro macro Schwarz so it’s worth a try. Saturday, August 17, 2013
GoufCustom	0.9 Susukino Pilsener 350 ml can as "Susukino Beer" bought at CitySuper in New Town Plaza, Shatin during the Hokkaido Food Fair Promotion. Translucent dull golden colour; Razor thin head and residual white foam which fades in 10 seconds; Almost no lacing with some notable carbonation; Sweet smell of malt, with corn, grains, syrup and light grass; Light sweet taste of thinned malt, with grains, soda water, light bread, notes of grapefruit, lemon and light grass; Light body, watery palate; Mouth feel is a very watered down, bare-bone pils, pretty much like a macro pale, with customary corn and grain taste overwhelmed any residual malt. Duh! Hoppiness has some grapefruit but only appears as spikes and has no impact on overall poor taste. Low grass and barely tastable bitterness, poor grapefruit finish; Slightly dry after taste, very easy to mouth. Comments: This beer is a disaster - no head, overtly thinned, strong corn taste, and near zero bitterness - It reminds me of the pitiful Hong Kong Beer, and it reduced to a glass of turbid malt water is an ugly sight and not that tolerable for taste. Reading from previous reviews, it appears that Susukino’s glory days as a micro is long gone. Drain pours! Sunday, August 11, 2013
KansaiBeerLvrs	2.9 Susukino Pilsener This brewery is not closed, they shut-down their restaurant and stopped making anything but a standard lager which is sold in cans around Sapporo. It is aimed at tourists I guess with the can covered in photos of Sapporo. It poured a clear straw color with minimal head. I’d heard it sucked but it was quite drinkable. Sweet & easy to drink when straight from the fridge but it didn’t have a whole lot of flavor. When it warmed up some grassy notes came through. Grovlam	3.6 Susukino Yubari Coal Mine Dark Lager Can. Huge light brown foamy head that mostly lasted. Excellent display of lacework. Pitch black color. Aroma of roasted malt, light coffee and mild dark chocolate. Hint of sourness and overall roasted and very malty. Over the palate came again light roasted malt, cold coffee and hint of sweet chocolate and light notes of dried dark fruit. In my opinion more like a stout then a Schwarzbier. Medium body with a light carbonation and for a 5% alcohol some feeling texture. Light to moderated sweet flavor with some counter bitterness. Lingering cold coffee and sweet chocolate finish. KyotoLefty	3.7 Susukino Pilsener Draught at the brewery, 2007. Decent malt and hop aromas, nice rounded, slightly buttery flavor in the Czech mold. Decent hopping and good flavor generally, a bit fruity. Nice beer, well balanced, though I was not as impressed this time as the first time I had it in the bottle! Can, 2012. KyotoLefty	3.9 Susukino Yubari Coal Mine Dark Lager Draught at the brewpub. They call it a stout. I was not sure whether it was a stout or a schwarz. Tastes more like a dry stout. Dark black with a nice tan head. Burnt malt aroma with coffee. Very creamy flavor, strong roasting and coffee. Sweetish, light but with full flavor, good malt. Clean and flavorful. buzzoven	2.7 Susukino Pilsener Found a can of this in a department store’s Sapporo spotlight bin. Poured a clear frothy golden colour. Taste was nice and malty with a nice distinct bite. The finish was somewhat abrupt, but the astyle is well represented here. Sunday, June 22, 2008
theisti	3.2 Susukino Pilsener 12 oz can from hogfodder, who brought this one back from Japan, and shared it with after4ever and myself. Pour is clear golden with a smallish white head. Aroma of sweet rice and some maltiness. Taste is pretty flat and watery. Some of the hop floral comes through in the taste. Not bad just dull. TimE	3.7 Susukino Pilsener On draft at the brewery restaurant. Deep golden color, frothy white head with toasty malts and a touch of grain. Slightly flowery bitterness, but definetely more on the german than Czech style as hops are definetely toned down. Very clean. Moderately bitter finish. Best of thier beers. BückDich	4 Susukino Yubari Coal Mine Dark Lager Tap @ Susukino taproom in Sapporo, the bartender said something about how this was brewed for Yabari, but it is made on site. So, it was a dark black color with tan head. Nice lacing, nose of bright roast, lots of toasty rye and chocolate. A nice roasty sweet flavor. Full and complex. This is not your typical dark lager, nearly into baltic porter territory with the light fruit and abrupt roastiness. Excellent. Tuesday, October 9, 2007

I didn’t find this one that impressive, but it has a subtle malty body for sure, a bit of caramel and some molasses. Super lacking vs. their pilsner and the food they carry. BückDich	3.6 Susukino Pilsener Draft: Martin speaks gospel on this one. In the can, it’s the typical, albeit surprisingly chewy and biscuity, pilsner malty lager. Plenty of hop bitterness and a full malt body. A dry finish and a tinny tail. On tap, this one is full and pleasing, some peanut and ramen notes, a clean nori and hop finish. Excellent balance and rewarding for the journey. If the beer isn’t worth while, the amazing food and sake and english menu should be. Wednesday, September 12, 2007
MartinT	3.6 Susukino Märzen My Bottom Line: Nutritious toasted bread laced by caramel showcase once again this brewer’s proclivity for well-extracted maltiness. This Märzen’s is a year-round serving at Susukino’s, and entirely deserves so. Further Personal Perceptions: -A veil of foam clings to the copper amber. -Body is comfortably round and drinkable. -Some fruitiness seeps from the sublte yeastiness, and some citrusy character from the hops. -This is as well done as the Pilsener, but maybe not as satisfying for me. MartinT	3.8 Susukino Pilsener My Bottom Line: This straightforward, chewy Pilsener demonstrates the relaxing power of bready pils malt. Honey drips onto the hay and cereals and supporting wooden, grassy hops provide just enough spice for you to crave more. Not nearly as good from the can, but massively satisfying on tap. Further Personal Perceptions: -A sheet of foam laces atop the clear blond. -The body is just superb from the tap, round, chewy, delicious, perfectly carbonated. -Dry cereals and crisp hops finish out each gorgeous sip. -A citrusy character renders more complexity. -The canned version was not as full, carbonation bubblier, and just not as well expressed.
