Italian Craft Beer Tasting with Greg Engert

Details

Join us as we explore the exciting Italian Craft Beer scene at our
next tasting on Friday, November 20th, with specific attention paid to the tart and funky offerings coming out the country.

Beginning at 5:30 PM, guests will taste 5 different Italian brews, ranging from native Farmhouse Ales blended with Belgian Lambic to Sour Brown Ales aged in old Brunello di Montalcino red wine barrels. Our Beer Director Greg Engert will guide guests through the tasting and discuss the flavors, inspirations and innovations of each beer. Additionally, Chef Anthony Chittum will cook a variety of light snacks for guests to
enjoy at the tasting.

The Italian Craft Beer Tasting is $40 per person (exclusive of tax and gratuity). Reservations are required for the tasting and can
be made by calling 202-524-5202.

Featured beers for the tasting will include:
Okie Matilda // Birrificio Toccalmatto & Prairie Artisan Ales,
Emilia-Romagna, Italy & Oklahoma, USA
This collaborative homage to the classic, Trappist-brewed Orval blends Farmhouse yeast and Brettanomyces for a dry and increasingly funky ale.

Beersel Mattina // Birrificio del Ducato & Drie Fonteinen,
Emilia-Romagna, Italy & Flemish Brabant, Belgium
A Pan-European blend of spiced, Italian-brewed Saison (finished with wild flowers, chamomile, coriander, green peppercorn and ginger) with 18-month-old traditional Belgian Lambic sourced from Drie Fonteinen.

Prunus // Birra del Borgo, Lazio, Italy
A new spin on Duchessa, Birra del Borgo’s flagship Saison brewed with Spelt. To the base Farmhouse Ale, Brewmaster Leonardo di Vincenzo adds fresh, unwashed wild cherries sparking a “semi-wild” secondary fermentation for notes of earthy fruit and a touch of tartness.

Oud Brunello // Birrificio del Ducato & Oxbow Brewing, Emilia-Romagna, Italy & Maine, USA
Inspired by the Belgian Oud Bruin tradition of barrel-aged Sour Brown Ales, this intercontinental collaboration draws upon Tuscan terroir and matures their Italian/American-brewed dark ale in barrels previously used to mature the exquisite Brunello di Montalcino.

Panil Raphael // Birrificio Torrechiara, Emilia-Romagna, Italy
From a small, artisan brewery in the Emilia-Romagna comes a rustic Red Ale of exceeding complexity. Like the Lambic beers of Belgium, Panil Raphael is 100% spontaneously-fermented, and aged for well over a year in oak barrels prior to release.

Cost: $40 per person
