As we all know, there is an important sub-category of malt liquors on this site that taste nothing at all like beer and are really more like alcoholic soda pops. (Feel free to include Bud-a-rita type brews as well.) Please tell me your favored brand and list in detail the reasons why you think it is the best in its category.

My choice: Steel Reserve BLK Berry 211

For the following listed reasons:

1. Tastes more or less exactly like grape pop and I like grape pop

2. Sweet but little to no artificial sweetener flavor

3. High alcohol content but relatively low alcohol burn

4. Presence of small head indicates possible significant quantities of malted barley were used in the production of this beverage

5. Inexpensive sale price and easy availability

6. Pleasing deep purple color

They do! There are three flavors (I think) which somehow I have avoided rating thus far. I will have to rectify this one of these days.

Interesting thread, and I completely agree with the OP. Steel Res Blackberry is a tasty alcopop, one of the better ones. Regular Steel Reserve is an abomination. The Lime-a-rita franchise hasn’t been all that bad either. Is it beer? Hardly, but I’d drink it. I like Kool-aid too.

I didn’t mind the Bud Light Mang-O-Rita.

- The Color was a vibrant orange and pretty good looking.
- The flavor was full of mango and didn’t taste horribly artificial.
- At 8% and relatively decent tasting it was a great price.
- Tastes good with a shot of tequila or rum thrown in.

Champale Pink is kinda the whale of fruit malt liquors. not bad, but not as good as Steel Res Blkbry. Been a while since I had a fruit flavored St Ides, but I remember them being obnoxiously sweet.

Thanks for the thorough response!

The Mang-O-Rita is the one that threw me over the edge and I just could not stand though. Because of it, I have not been able to bring myself to try the cranberry one. I think adding some booze would really help it out though. I add gin when I pick up shandies and stuff just to rate (after I rate it, of course).

I think the Lime-A-Rita is pretty good stuff for what it is though. It just tastes like a crappy margarita at a cheap Mexican place. Scratches a certain itch.
