As some of you will know, very small scale cider makers are exempt from paying duty on their output. Most farms, particularly in the traditional cider producing western counties, produced cider at one time. However, in more recent times, many of those cider orchards - often containing ancient trees of rare, or unique, varieties - had fallen into disuse or been grubbed up. The duty exemption has encouraged many farmers to resume production as a sideline and encouraged others to take up cider production on a small scale. It has also helped to preserve these biologically important orchards. |
Definately something we need to preserve. Another tradition under threat. |
