Hi friends.

I’ll be visiting my mother in law between Dec 27th and Jan 6th in Mondsee Austria, about 30 mins outside of Salzberg. I’ve already done a good bit of Bavaria, and a trip to Salzberg is already in the works....

So, my question is: are there any can’t miss places in western Austria or south eastern Germany that I may be missing?

Also, I’m not much of trader, but if anyone’s interested in some local stuff from the NY metro region, I can bring some cans/bottles over with me. Or we can just try to meet up for a beer. I know it’s the holiday season, and I don’t really know what my schedule will be when I there, but it’s worth a shot.

Or do you mean Salzberg Hallstatt?

Yes. Salzburg. This one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salzburg

Perhaps the Western Austria was confusing; I forgot about that little stick at the bottom.

Make sure to visit Obersalzberg as well

Pinnacle of German humour can be climbed there:

Around Salzburg, the hills are alive with the sound of music.

And Lederhosen exploding with Stiegl farts.

Believe me, I used to live there - sadly before the time I could fully appreciate Stiegl’s quality.

It surely looks very beautiful in the movie. But now you got me curious aobout the smell of Stiegl farts.

I loved the Stiegl keller overlooking the town and the outdoor Augustiner keller as well, but I went during the spring. I have no idea whether they are even open in December and if they are, what the atmosphere would be. Augustiner has a huge indoor space so I would bet that is open.

Find the Stiegl Paracelus (sp?). It was probably the best keller beer I had in two weeks in the German speaking world.

Stiegl Hütten-Gaudi (alias of Stiegl Goldbräu) was one of the most disappointing beers I had last year.
