60 Located in an old factory of some sort alongside one of the main thoroughfares into/out of town. Most of the old building is consumed by a homebrew shop, it appears. Small bar area with about 8 choices on tap. I've had some of theirs before in bottles. Pretty standard lineup. Beers were good. Nice lawn out front with live music was a pleasant setting on a cool day. Worth a visit. Brewery #954. |
72 You do feel like this might be a murder house when you see it from the outside, but inside is a lovely (tiny) seating/tasting area. Service was excellent. Selection was about a dozen taps/cans/bottles. Their beer ranges from very-odd-meh to pretty good, usually with one standout that I really like. Value is excellent. Great stop if you're doing a Frederick beer crawl. |
54 We came here on 13.8.2017. Small tap room in an old stylish industrial building. We had a Session IPA and a Sour Ale both were quite ok. Guy behind the bar was extremely talkative, this was a bit nerve racking. Nothing special, not worth a detour. |
80 Nice little brewery in Frederick...good option to stop here first and juxtapose it with a later visit to Flying Dog. They had 5 beers here when I visited July 1st. They were all decent enough...and maybe two were better than the rest. I liked their beers...can’t say any really stuck out as amazing or anything. The two bartenders were very nice and helpful...which led to some enjoyable conversations. The place itself décor-wise is nice enough...but nothing really original or special...but certainly nothing negative either. I recommend a stop here if in the area...but I wouldn’t go out of my way to visit. |
70 Small bar and brewery operation, 5 samples for 5$, three regular beers and two rotating |
74 Arrived just before last call and happy we managed to hang around for a bit. Very solid beers and the guy working was great in explaining the beers and enthusiastic. Basic taproom with little by way of tables and chairs but no worry, worth stopping by for the beers. |
84 Nice brewery with a small tasting room, next to The Flying Barrel homebrew shop. Stopped in with Travlr and nate2g after finding out the coffee shop across the street was closed. We came in at last call but the guy working the tasting room was happy to let us get a tasting. Tasting includes a 3-4 oz sample of their five drafts, one at a time though. Tasting glass is yours to keep. Nice variety of styles and all pretty well done. Well worth a stop. |
78 Large place in what looked like an old paper or fabric mill, large sign that said "The Flying Barrel," I think, with only a tiny sign on the glass door that said Monocacy. Although the website said you need tickets to join a tour and tasting, they easily accommodated walk-ins. 5 bucks gets you the tour, five beers on tap and a tasting glass. We skipped the tour actually. The beers were OK, and included a couple I hadn’t seen before. We also bought a case of four kinds of Brewers Alley beers, since all Brewers Alley beers are now brewed here at Monocacy, the small system at Brewers Alley is no longer used. Stupid Maryland laws don’t allow you to mix six packs, only cases. I’m sure they have a reason for this, but the reason escapes me. Worth a stop. 4-9-8-n/a-7-14 70.
Re-rate March 2015. Beers have improved, with greater variety. Barstaff very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Now a must-stop when in Frederick. |
72 Small brewery that offers tours on the 3rd Thursday of the month. Pretty typical brewery tour walking you through the brewing area describing the brewing process. Only costs $5 which includes a take-home tasting glass and samples at the end of the tour. Brewer’s Alley beers are brewed here, so expect those choices to be on tap at the end of the tour. Tasting room is small and simple, but the use of construction materials used are pretty interesting. |
74 Went there for the brewery tour - hidden away in part of an old ice cream factory. Tasting room is bare bones - just a bar and a bathroom. This is pretty much only here for the brewery tour. $5 dollars for the glass and samples of the beer, good deal. Staff are great people, really personable, enjoyable to chat with. |
