70 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 11/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 13/20 b727trijet (150) Isleworth, England | March 6, 2013 Tried the cask 60 schlilling which was not bad. The Grog "brown ale" has over the years adjusted to a porter! The double IPA was good but not quite Green Flash standard! Large spacious bar with pretty worn out furniture. Worth at least one visit. | 76 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 11/15 FOOD N/A VALUE N/A OVERALL 16/20 theisti (352) Leawood, Kansas | February 20, 2013 Visited mid-afternoon on a Monday for lunch and a couple of beers. The brewpub is located on the second floor of a cool old building on a side street in central Philadelphia. Based on the narrow staircase, I was expecting a cramped tiny space, but the stairs open up to a sizable bar and restaurant area. The bar itself is small, 8 seats, and well worn. There are tables and booths spread out through the three rooms, and seems designed to handle crowds. The service at the bar was great, very attentive and friendly. I had the bleu cheese and bacon mussels, and the session IPA and cask brown ale (they had 5 beers + a cask). Everything with fresh and tasty, enjoyed my time here. | 54 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 4/10 SELECTION 7/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 6/10 OVERALL 13/20 BiddleBrau (76) Fort Washington, Pennsylvania | December 7, 2012 Stopped in for a quick drink so my review could be lacking given the short time I spent here. However, I have been here years before when it was the Sam Adams brew house (can we say decades ago). With only 3 people at the bar looking for service i was surprised at how long it took for the bartender to recognize our needs. Ambiance could be promising under right circumstances although I do like the interior a lot. Selection of house brews limited. If it wasn’t for the pubiness of the place I’d probably not return. | 66 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 8/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 13/20 Beerman6686 (92) Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania | November 2, 2012 Divey type brewpub, but with a small phohibition type bar that we sat at upstairs which I liked. Service was good, probably because the bar was so small, and tender was knowledgable. Selection was decent, probably 6-8 of their beers on tap. Beers were fairly cheap and were able to get in small portions. Worth it if you’re walking past, but not much more than that. | 68 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 8/15 FOOD N/A VALUE N/A OVERALL 15/20 rosenbergh (334) Helsinki, Finland | September 8, 2012 Visited Wednesday lunch time. It was quite busy but still the bartender had time to chat for a moment. 5 taps and 1 cask. I had the cask one (BPA) and it was tasty. There’s nothing special about this place but nothing’s fundamentally wrong either. Could visit again (if it was a bit closer). | 64 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 9/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 13/20 mikem409 (161) bloomfield, Michigan | August 14, 2012 big place with lots of cool bobble heads. did not eat but beer was good and you could do half size | 72 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 6/10 OVERALL 15/20 watson1977 (114) The dub c, Pennsylvania | August 14, 2012 2nd visit was much better than the first! Made me realize that I actually like the place in the daytime...this is a lunch spot for a quiet beer...good natural light and not overcrowded.
while the bartenders were friendly and fast here, i had trouble finding any other redeeming qualities about this place. it was dark, dingy, crowded, and stuffy. It appeared to be very dirty and was filled with a higher concentration of people with poor hygiene (to say it nicely) than most bars i’ve been. the dart board setup (where drunks throw darts across the walkway at the back of the bar) was a nice touch as it added danger and excitment to my visit. i had a belgian chocolate stout which had little if any chocolate to the flavor or aroma and quite frankly it was terrible...one of the VERY few times ive ever sent a beer back. the BPA was however fairly drinkable and i was able to choke down 2 pints before running for the door. i would not go back here. ever. | 62 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 9/15 FOOD N/A VALUE N/A OVERALL 13/20 GT2 (346) Riverslime, California | July 10, 2012 Interesting, cramped, two story dive bar slash brewpub smack dab in the middle of downtown Philly. Service was mediocre to annoyingly slow, inattentive. Pretty sure they only had their house beers on tap, which looked interesting. However, most of them were not very good: diacetyl laden, soapy, astringent. Just not well made. They have food, but we did not eat here. Mostly burgers and bar food. Strange place with a quirky vibe. I would consider going back, but there are just too many other top notch beer bars in Philly. | 78 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD N/A VALUE N/A OVERALL 15/20 Capa (248) Manama, Bahrain | February 18, 2012 The bar is not polished, not modern, but very comfortable and corner bar feeling. Friendly barkeepers willing to explain the beers. The brewery is visible behind glass panes. They had six of their beers on when I was there along with a 2010 RR Temptation tap. Beers were good and of a fairly wide variety. I didn’t eat so can’t comment there. Real mellow atmosphere. Casual and comfortable. Very nice. | 76 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 9/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 15/20 Slipstream (82) | January 23, 2012| Updated May 19, 2012 Interesting and eccentric brewpub in Center City, Philly. The big brewkettles are behind a glass wall right near the bar, so you can keep an eye on the beer being made as you drink. There are showcases full of little dolls wearing all sorts of outfits - guess they must be nodding head dolls. An attractive and mostly wooden interior, with a traditional look to it. I like the vibe here quite a bit. I didn’t try the food on this visit, but the beers were good - there were around 6-8 taps of fresh brew, and you can buy inexpensive small glasses if you like. The bartenders are friendly and knowledgeable about a number of subjects - good qualities in a bartender. So far I have only been there during the day, when the crowd was sparse and low-key, but I would like to visit again. |
