Cask conditioned Gravity Dispense GBBF 2010. A black beer with a small off-white head. A good roasty smoky aroma with a bit of fruit. A bit of roast and a touch of smoke in the mouth but it’s thinner than you’d want and lacks oomph. Not bad though.

Honest Town Capall Dorche Stout
Cask at GBBF pitch black, no head. Harsh roast barley nose, but surprisingly smooth in flavor and palate. One of the smoothest American stouts in a while. Strong smoke oak and meat flavors with a good steely kick in the end. Nice

Honest Town IPA
Cask at dba Brooklyn. Pale golden pour. The nose is a bit sweet and lightly hoppy. A little bit of orangey citrus. Light lemon and a bit of odd astringency. Chewy though in spite of that. Assertive hopppiness that helps to cut the sweetness, but it would have helped to have been less sweet to begin with.

Honest Town Blueberry
On tap at the Dark Horse Tavern, Southbridge MA, 13 November 2009. I’m not generally a fan of blueberry beers but the completist in me insisted I try this. Pale gold colour. Quite gentle whiff of blueberry in the aroma, remaining quite subtle on the palate. Light mouthfeel. Doesn’t fall into the trap of piling in the artificial blueberry flavouring but, subtle and drinkable as it is, there isn’t a whole lot going on.

On tap at the Dark Horse Tavern, Southbridge MA, 13 November 2009. Black in colour. A good dry, dark stout. Plenty of roast malt and coffee ground notes. Quite mellow, but firm, mouthfeel. Decent, drinkable stuff. More than the sum of its parts.

Honest Town IPA
On tap at the Dark Horse Tavern, Southbridge MA, 13 November 2009. Clear ginger colour. Not a massive, blockbusting IPA but tasty and well balanced. Just a good, well put together, hugely drinkable IPA. Very fresh.

Honest Town IPA
Cask at Brooklyn dba: Hazy amber with a fading off white head. Fruity hop aroma- some mild specialty grains (crystal) under a soft peachy and resiny presence. Slick oily body. Fruity resiny hop flavor- along with a peachy presence. More crystal malt graininess comes though towards the back which is dry, long and has a lingering bitterness. A simple but solid IPA.

Honest Town Southbridge Ordinary Bitter (SOB)
Cask (handpump) at NERAX North, Haverhill MA, 7 November 2009 @ 4.1%. Hazy straw/gold colour. Not much head. Some condition but rather flat on the palate. Sweetish and slightly malty with fruity touches - hints of orange. Fairly soft mouthfeel and rather short of hop bite. Seemed a touch tired. Marked for re-rate when the opportunity arises.

Honest Town Imperial Sturbridge Coffee Roasters Stout
Poured into tasting glass from the tap Color is a very dark black, with a foamy light brown head. The smell is of roasted coffee beans and a slight dark chocolate flavor. The taste is a coffee flavor, is a bit of a cappuccino flavor with hint of hazelnut. This beer was a surprise for me. I am not a fan of coffee and have not liked a coffee flavored stout before. This beer being more in the flavor of a cappuccino was what won me over. This beer would be great in the morning as well as in the evening. Would go well with a doughnut or two as well.

3.1
Honest Town Padraig's Irish Red
My Bottom Line:
This very fruity Irish-style Red Ale focuses on raisiny and caramel malts to build a healthy body and a decent session.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam tops the dark red.
-The day I visited, I thought this was the most complex of their brews.
-This was underhopped, as were most of their brews.
-The soft carbonation increased drinkability.

On tap at the Dark Horse Tavern.

2.7
Honest Town American Pale Ale
My Bottom Line:
Floral and citrusy hops adorn this forgettable Pale Ale’s light honeyed cereals, leading to a clean but utterly storyless quaff.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam circles the nearly clear golden.
-The malt profile is not developed.
-The finish is really soft; could definitely use more hops.
-It’s not that this isn’t well-made, it’s just that the macros would do the same for an APA and I wonder why they bothered to brew this.

On tap at the Dark Horse Tavern.

3.1
Honest Town Uberaschen Hefeweizen
My Bottom Line:
Banana and pear esters provide most of the flavors in this smooth and approachable Hefeweizen.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the cloudy blond.
-While the body is well rounded, the flavor profile and aroma are too timid for my tastes.
-Carbonation is rather soft, which makes this really drinkable.
-Wheat does offer some citrus notes.

Honest Town Southbridge Ordinary Bitter (SOB)
My Bottom Line:
Fruity esters, hay-like pale malts and mild herbal hops create a balanced and drinkable Bitter.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the hazy blond.
-Banana esters in a Bitter? Alrighty then...
-The body is slim, but not thin.
-Smooth carbonation increases drinkability.
-This is not hoppy enough, especially in the flavor profile.

Honest Town Padraig's Imperial Red
Really quite outstanding. I imagine it’s the clear all star of a small brew house. Very sweet aroma like apple, apricot, aged hop and sweet creamy malt. Flavor is the above, but unifies in a distinct candy apple flavor, caramel ad all. This is nicely balanced with slightly oxy malt and of course stalwart alcohol. Really choice offering, and likely the best example of the sub-style since Decadence 06.
