Gold Hill Axe Pic'n Stout
Draft at brewery. Lots of chocolate and coffee in the nose. Taste is lightly tart and dry finish. Slightly watery. Just seems a bit light all around from aroma to flavor to mouthfeel. Even for a dry stout

Gold Hill Hank's Porter
Draft at brewery. Light chocolate and sweet sugar; short of coffee. Seems like more of a brown ale than a porter but very smooth. After reviewing the commercial description, seems more in line with something like Sam’s Taddy Porter. Solid.

Gold Hill Boomtown IPA
Draft at brewery. Light caramel and toast in the nose. Minimal hops, some grass, slightly sweet and toffee. Some graininess. Beer really seems like more of an Amber than an IPA

Gold Hill Hank's Porter
Draft @ the brewery. Clear dark amber with a thin light tan head, kind of light in color for a porter. Aroma is faint chocolate, bread and fruit. Flavor is smooth bready malt, some chocolate, light yeast esters and faint hop bitterness. Medium to light body with average carbonation. Good beer but a bit light all around for a porter.

Gold Hill Hank's Porter
Smell bitter chocolate, aluminum, taste Munich malt, white pepper, grape...really mild hopping. It tasted more like an Oktoberfest than a Porter. Tasty, nice lacing and head once it warmed up to 55F

Gold Hill Hank's Porter
Bomber from the brewery (they don’t distribute). Pours dark brown with a creamy beige head. Aromas of chocolate and chocolate. Med body. Flavor is chocolate over some pretty smooth dark malt. There is a very faint burnt malt aspect. It is more dry than sweet. The bitter in the finish might be coffee, or not. There’s some sort of robust flavor here. Not particularly a porter fan, but this ale is very good. It gets more chocolate as time moves on. There’s a bit of physical grittiness to it. If they ever start putting this into their red wine barrels the world will shift on its axis.

Gold Hill Axe Pic'n Stout
Bomber from the brewery. Pours very dark brown with a bubbly dark tan head. Aroma of herby, dark malt with chocolate. Might be a touch of anise. Med+ body. Flavor is smooth dark malt, very dark chocolate, and some herb/hop it’s hard to pin down. It’s very, very smooth. Drinks well.

Gold Hill 49'er Red
Bomber from the brewery. Pours ruddy amber with a slight creamy beige head. Rich malty aroma. Hint of chocolate. Med + body. Flavor is roast malt with something suggesting chocolate and some sort of mild hop. It’s not really sweet, but far from bitter. Seems to have taken a step towards being a porter.

Gold Hill Gold Strike Light (Summer Ale)
Bomber from the brewery. Pours light copper/amber with a creamy/frothy near white head. Aroma of malt/caramel without much else. Hint of something, but? Med body. Comes on like a perry for a split second, then it’s light roast malt and something perhaps citric. Fresh and clean. Finishes respectably bitter, tho I’m not sure what hop is in here. There’s even a suggestion of earth. Seems much sturdier than a typical light summer ale.

Gold Hill Old Miners Scotch Ale
Bomber from the brewery. Pours dark ruddy brown with a transient off-white head (or maybe beige). Aromas of peat and dark fruit. Full bodied. Flavor is peaty and darkly fruity. Somehow the body density lessens. The finish is peaty and fruity, not really very sweet. Not a sticky sweet ale. Interesting and dryish. Not to mention peaty.

Gold Hill Hank's Porter
Bottle shared at the December iteration of the Santa Cruz tasting series. Medium brown color, fizzy tan head. Chocolatey, light roast, somewhat metallic and dusty. Standard porter flavor, thin bodied and light. The metal note becomes distracting as time wears on. Typical brewpub fare.

Gold Hill Axe Pic'n Stout
Bomber, picked up today at the winery - brewery. Poured dark brown with medium tan head. Nose was a blend of many aromas, spicy chocolate, cola/root beer, nutty....taste was balanced, medium bodied, lively, with a nice long finish. This place is a real find if you are in the area.

Gold Hill Gold Trail Pale Ale
Bomber, picked up today at the winery - brewery. Poured new penny copper, on the cloudy side, with a nice off white head. Mild citrus and floral nose, medium bodied with a smooth taste that was on the sweeter side. Nice overall pale ale, heavier than most. This place is a real find if you are in the area.

Gold Hill Gold Strike Light (Summer Ale)
22oz bottle, purchased at the brewery. Pours a bright, mostly clear orange-amber color (surprisingly dark for something with "light" prominently in the title); thin, fine-bubbled, off-white head with solid lacing. Basic, lightly sweet malt nose (generally nondescript) with a touch of caramel present; light hop character, on the mineral side of things; quiet and crisp. Medium-light body; moderate CO2; nicely crisp and hop-forward in the mouth (at least bitterness-forward, with a nice jolt on the tip of the tongue), followed by softer bready malts and hints of nuts and light caramel; that minerally hop bitterness is pervasive and lively throughout, and, while this is nothing close to anything "light", this is a flawless brew that’s quite drinkable. (That said, pretty damn spendy for what it is, at like $7.00 or something including the bottle deposit). Medium-lengthy finish, showing some emergent toastiness and lingering earthy/mineral hops.

Gold Hill Axe Pic'n Stout
Draft @ Gold Hill Brewery. Hugely impressed by this one. Pours a deep, dark-cola color; creamy, fine-bubbled light-tan head with excellent retention and lacing. Incredibly complex nose: leather, dark fruits, cola, chocolate, and just a touch of green apple that does nothing wrong here. Medium body; moderate CO2; light acidity; no show of alcohol. Medium chocolate and cola, with light contributing notes of leather, dark dried fruits, a touch of raisin; hugely aromatic, and way more complex than a stout should be from a brewery no one’s ever heard of. Delicious. Lasting, dry finish of dark chocolate, leather, hints of licorice. Hugely impressed here.

Gold Hill Hank's Porter
AKA Hank’s Honey Porter. Draft @ Gold Hill Brewery. Pours a clear, dark-amber color; creamy, fine-bubbled off-white head with excellent retention and lacing. Rounded honey notes and some biscuity malts in the aroma. Medium body; medium CO2; no alcohol. Sweet, honeyed core with a nice rounded floral character; some light cola and biscuity malts comprise the majority of the porter character; highly drinkable; nicely integrated honey character, well expressed.

Gold Hill Gold Trail Pale Ale
Draft @ Gold Hill Brewery. Pours a bright, golden-orange color; fine-bubbled white head. Crystalline sugar along with some zesty earthy and citrus hops; nicely balanced, maybe a touch dry. Medium body; medium to medium-high CO2; lively presence in the mouth. Vibrant, juicy citrus and earthy/floral hop complexity here; just a touch of underlying crystal malt; damn tasty. Medium-lengthy finish: toasty, lingering citrus and earthy hops; nicely dry.

Gold Hill Gold Trail Pale Ale
Bottle from my nephew in law who got it from an owner I think he said. Bomber has stick on plastic label, which is ok, but says "33 FL. OZ." No bar code, so I don’t think it’s usually available off brewery premises. Pours dark amber with a clingy, frothy off-white head - three fingers. Aroma is light roast malt with light grassy/floral notes. Medium body with rather creamy carbonation. Flavor is more malty than not, so it finishes rather sweet. It is a high quality item, just more malty than I’d prefer. There’s very light astringency, but that’s not substituting for bitterness.
