Mike's Mild Ale
Cask. A deep red beer with a thin beige head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt and wood, leading to a dry roasted finish. The body is light.

Mike's Mild Ale
Rating from "since ages ago". Dark coppery brown hue with almost no head. Aroma is malty malty malty - slightly chocolaty toffee toasty but mostly like Maltexo malt syrup. Tastes sweet with light bitterness. Full body, almost flat carbonation, long malty finish. Got this because of the "Michael Jackson factor" ...nice but not quite my cup of tea.

Mike's Mild Ale
A beer that I found when I drove past the brewery while on holiday in NZ a few years ago. I now visit the brewery every time I return to NZ (about every 2-3 years). A classic mild ale that has even travelled to the Great British Beer Festival in London this year.

(Bottle 33 cl) Pours a clear golden with a rough, off-white head. Sweet malt aroma. Medium body, notes of malt and flowers and then unfortunately an unpleasant, unclean and astringent finish. 210208

Wohoo, another one of Micheal Jackson’s 500. On tap and bottle at the brewery. Pours a slightly hazy dark brown with a small off-white head. Medium sweetness with a light bitterness. Heavy malt aromas with caramel, toffee and toasted malts with a hint of nuts and milk. Only a soft touch of bittering hops. Medium to ful bodied. Soft carbonation. Malty and slightly dry finish.

Bottle, was quite effervescent, with a dark golden colour and a bubbly white head. A sweetish malty aroma. A resonably pleasant malty palate with a good hoppy bitterness with increased dryness in the finish.

Tried some nice Mild Ales whilst I was in England this time last year so it was great to revisit a style that I was growing fond of. Deep ruby body with a light tan head. Chocolate and milky coffee on the nose. Smooth taste with good malt flavours showing, mld liquorice notes and a long finish.

Mike's Mild Ale
Another good example of organic beer from Kiwi land. For all intents and purposes looks like a porter or a brown ale (to me) but I guess it’s not too far off the Rate Beer descriptor. Chocolate brown in colour with the thinnest of heads. Mild roast and chocolate nose, hints of malty sweetness. Thinner and firm in the mouth as the roast provides some astringency. Roast and chocolate all but disappears, leaving the beer with standard ale flavours.

Have to admit I am not the most experienced with the mild ale and this seemed more like and English Brown ale to me. Page 315 of Michael Jackson’s Great Beer Guide and only 197 Classic Brews to go.

I had high expections facing the 4 pack in front of me but the nose and flavour was definitely too burnt and this Ale also finishes a little on the bitter side for me.

Mike's Lager
330ml bottle was perhaps overfilled, with less than 10mm of head space available. There was no hiss from opening the bottle which had me a little suspicious, but it poured with a small head and some carbonation. Aroma hinting at the use of cane sugar in the brew? or maybe a bit of corn... not really a clean lager aroma at all. Dry and thin with a fairly harsh hop aftertaste... similar to a green bullet hop flavour but not quite the same same... maybe one of the other NZ super alpha varieties.

Mike's Mild Ale
Bottled. Clear dark brown, small brief head. Aroma of coffee and arctic raspberries. Light bodied, yet firm. Dryish and gently roasty with pleasant, slender and soft mouthfeel. The hop rate is low, allowing the roasty malt to dominate the finish. Wonderfully balanced. By far and away the best mild I’ve ever had out of a PET bottle...

Mike's Mild Ale
Clear brown, not much head. Grainy cocoa, mild coffee grounds, pumpernickel and even a suggestion of Pepsi in the aroma. Really dry, grainy, spicy malt character is excellent, with a subtle tartness and some astringency adding somewhat to the mouthfeel. However, it’s really lacking in both hop and yeast character, and has quite a prickly carbonation. Seemed filtered. Considering its one-dimensional nature it does some incredible things, but ultimately it never lived up to my (admittedly very high) expectations. Yet another great organic beer from NZ, though.

Bottled - thanks Beer Legend. Presents a rich mahogony with a small vanishing off-white head. Rich chocolate and nut aroma. Chocolate and crystal malts dominate the flavours complimented by a dry medium bitter finish. Since I’m a sucker for chocolate malt in beers, this is a beer that I’m happy with - not overly complex and a bit rough around the edges - but still a good beer.

Cloudy gold colour with thin white head, sweetly malt aroma. Weak thin taste, almost metalic, like the bottom of the rain tank. So organic it tasted like mushrooms.

Tasted 21/08/2005. 330ml bottle. Yellow gold. White, disappearing, head. Laces slightly. Slight corny aroma mixed with sulphide (burning matches). Flavour is unfortunatley DMS dominated - corny, vegetal. Lightish body and atouch overcarbonated. Missed the mark. The mild is certainly a big step above.

Mike's Mild Ale
Tasted 15/05/2005. 330ml bottle from Regional Wines and Spirits (about time thinks TheGrandmaster). Mild indeed. Reddish brown with an airy, disappearing, light tan head. Good chocolate nose that follows through in the subtle flavour along with a toasty malt flavour. Very clean finish. Watery palate. A bit watery and lightweight but not a bad session ale. Re-rate 17/05/2206, prep for "Beer O’Clock" at www.pc.blogspot.com. 330ml from RW&S, again. Darker than I remember, inky red, with none of the watery aspect I picked up last time. Slender through the mouth, without being thin. Great chocolate malt notes, especially as it warms. Subtle. Very nice. Only fault is a slight carbonic note, which means it’s a good idea to give this one 30mins breathing time before you drink it.

(Bottle 33 cl) According to White Cliff’s website the brewers are also winemakers - a rather unusual business solution. Also a beer made from rainwater is a first for me. But I guess it’s the organic way to do things. Very dark, not much of a head. Very smoked flavours, almost burned. But incredibly light in body. Quite refreshing. 091203

Poured from the bottle. Little head, but a good ruby brown colour. Very nice aroma, the caramel malt somes through very strong. Unfortunately, the taste does not live up to the aroma. I found the carbonation over-powering and could not find much flavour, except for a sweet maltiness that came through. Probably a beer which is better cold (which isn’t my type of brew). Still, not bad for a beer made from rain water off the roof (or it used to be).

I don’t know if I got a bad bottle, but this is a reddish brown color, opague. The aroma is carmelish and slighty "malty". The flavor is fairly sour, almost like vinegar, mixed with nuts. Sour finish I think I may have got a bad bottle!

Interesting beer. Aroma is of heavy caramel. The flavor is caramel, tea, and a bit of vinegar. This sample is a bit old so the vinegar may be from age. A nice beer but a bit to heavy on the caramel.

A nice beer. Yeah, its a bit light, but it shows some nice character and balance. Soft, with light notes of caramel, and a definite saltyness (kind like fino sherry, but way lighter), pretty dry. Ultimate session beer if their ever was one, if only we could get it here in Sydney.

this is only my third mild i think, but i thought milds were supposed to be flabby, malty and sweet. this one is one of the dryest beers i can think of. very nutty, salty, a bit elusively honeyish, and drily malty, and a bit peaty in the finish - reminds me of that great palindrome beer, lia fail. thanks duff

Deep amber-brown colour. Light chocolate, nutty malt nose. Chocolate, hazelnut, slight roasted flavours. Well balanced, not too bitter. Very nutty. Smooth as a result of lagering. Not super complex, but its not supposed to be, a wonderfully simple, yet elegant beer. MJ is right, this is a classic mild!!
