FatPhil	2.8 Dundulis / Birzu Duona Kurkas 500ml bottle (Vingiu non-existent webshop, Kaunas - thanks Tomas!) at 5.3% (4:4:6:4:10=2.8) For pity's sake - look at the label - the picture, the words in the commercial description - they're identical. This is just 3 batches of the same beer. They're all rye beers, the one that calls itself a rye beer isn't the special one. They're all keptinises, the one that calls itself keptinis isn't special. This one, at 4.9%, is 5.3% here, so that difference in ABV isn't special. I wish mad obsessive tick hunters would stop just creating new entries for every slight batch-to-batch variation. Yes, the artwork on the label has changed superficially, but guess what - that happens all the time on all kinds of beers, and it doesn't change the beer. Read the fucking commercial description on the label for fuck's sake, it's there in black and white. Sheesh. Anyway, the beer review... . Deep reddy brown, tight tan head, looks like a good dunkel or roggenbier. Ooof, pretty hardcore offish sour aroma - ahh, so it is a raw beer too? But it's malty, there clearly was a good beer recipe behind this. Taste is so full of bready malts, it almost completely covers the sourness in the aroma. Nice soft smooth palate too. Lovely roasted bready finish, like a good tmave. Such a shame about the sourness. Work on that, guys - please! And then release it with a slightly different label, so I can get a 4th tick out of the beer. Oh, Anna mentions spices, but, to be honest, they're completely under the radar. Aroma of brown bread, toast, chestnut, cashew, raisin, old banana. Taste has sweetish raisin & prune, sourish berries over brown-bready, almost wholemeal maltiness. Alengrin	3.5 Dundulis / Birzu Duona Kurkas “Baked beer” by a Lithuanian farm brewery (in a tradition dating back many centuries) and thus almost by definition a so-called ‘keptinis’, but, contrary to the real thing still made by a handful of farms there, boiled instead of raw – and bottled, though only limitedly so. One of the eyecatchers at this year’s Dok Brewing Festival, not too surprisingly perhaps, since Dok’s head brewer Janos has been dabbling in these northern and eastern European farmhouse beers for several years now. Pale beige, moussy, shred-lacing, opening head on a lightly hazed, very dark cola-brown beer with mahogany glow. Aroma of roasted walnuts, old coffee filters, burnt toast, wet leather, fresh bayleaf, burnt currants, ‘stale’ but interesting hints of a jar of green peppercorns and sweaty socks. Dryish onset, some dried blackberry and elderberry, medium carbonated with smooth mouthfeel; dominating burnt-nutty and toasted bread-crusty, in that sense indeed ‘baked’ malts, very stout- or Schwarzbier-like in effect; this ‘blackened’ maltiness persists in a dry, peppery finish, where some dark-fruitiness is retained and most of the bitterness, if not all, is provided by the toastedness of the malts. Very different from the keptinis made by Dok itself a few years ago, this one very clearly uses malt which has been baked far more, to the extent that the end result tastes roasted rather than baked – like a dry stout, in other words. FatPhil	3.4 Dundulis Altas 500ml bottle (Vingiu non-existent webshop - thanks Tomas!) (7:4:7:3:13=3.4) Beautiful misty chestnut brown, tight doughy persistent pale head. Lovely gentle malty nutty aroma, some gentle woodiness, hints of tobacco leaves, some gentle esters on swirling. Medium palate, crisp carbonation. Very malty taste, plenty of real barley, some breadcrusts, and tobacco-leaf bitterness. Slightly dry woody bitterness in the finish. Absolutely nailed the Alt style, I could ignore the label and easily imagine myself to be in Dusseldorf. However, the rich nuttiness of the barley does give its Lithuanian origins away somewhat. Great beer, just perhaps a bit overcarbonated, but the quick swirls helped. Monday, February 28, 2022

FatPhil	3.2 Dundulis Kilkim Žaibu (XXI) 500ml bottle (Vingiu non-existent webshop, Kaunas - thanks Tomas!) (6-:3:6+:4:13=3.2) Bright gold, clear at the top, hazy towards the bottom, most of the sediment happily stays at the bottom of the bottle when poured carefully. Briefish small tight head settles to a film. Very mushroomy aroma. Similar taste, but it's more balanced, there's more barley - that classic Lithuanian fingerprint, nicely chewy - but it's remarkably soft. Not obviously chamomile, but Anna's note in the order said "flavoured with chamomile and achilles", whatever that may be, however, that's almost certainly contributing to the softness. Gentle bitter finish, mild fresh floral hops. Very easy drinker, they weren't lying about "lengvas", definitely ticks that box. Possible underrate, this is an understated beer which doesn't jump out of the glass and demand that you submit to its awesome powers, which means it's a little hard to get particularly excited by it. But 3.2 is a score I hand out to decent English bitters too, it should be taken as a compliment (the middle of my bell-curve is 2.75). Sunday, October 17, 2021
