There is standard hop bitterness on the tongue, but really not much else. Not memorable.

One has to ask what the point is of making a beer that is so close to the Happy Monk. Bland, little hops and slightly cidery.

Rather bland. Some medium dark malt taste and a hint of acidity. Lacks the complexity associated with the style.

Pours a dirty light straw with a big head. Nothing on the nose and not much on the tongue either. A little bit of malt and bitterness, but mostly sourness.

Pine and honey on the nose, with pine dominating on the mouth. Unfortunately also a note reminiscent of dirty river water.

330ml bottle: Pours a slightly hazy golden with frothy white head that retains well. Slight hay aroma with a note of papaya. Slightly astringent with a medium bitterness. Body is medium to light with a fizzy carbonation. Overall the beer is okay, nothing radical though.

Pours slightly hazy amber with almost no head. Slightly sour bread nose. Medium mouthfeel and low carbonation. Tastes a bit sour. Ok but not best belgian. Had to re-rate this, as I worked through it the sourness lingered more and more detracting from the taste.

-Bottle from league of beers- Pours a murky red with small white head. Aroma is raspberry candy. Round palate. Aftertaste is burnt wood, mold, cardboard, plastic, malt and red fruit. Overall: Okay, but the off flavors in the aftertaste is not good. Best beer i have had from De Garve.

Pours brown with small white head. Aroma is battery acid, dirty water and some extremely stressed belgian yeast. Aftertaste is very bitter, weird fruitiness, actually some chocolate and lasting metal finish. Overall: Just horrible.. Thumbs up for some chocolate.

Bought two bottles at a bottle store in Groenkloof 0n 070302014.. The worst beer I ever had. My daughter also tasted and threw it away. Mine - straight down the drain. R66.00 I paid for drain pour, pigswill. No head, totally skunked, sour . Drink at your own peril

Straw-amber and a little bit hazy.  Aroma is phenolic, gluey-sweet and a little bit dirty.  Taste is sweet, light phenols like bubble gum.  Not flawed per se but not a great example.

Hazy dull straw. The aroma, sadly, is stacks of butter, totally vile. Taste is watery, buttery and really without redeeming qualifies. I’ve had zhigulyoskoye that is less nasty.

Bottle from store in Cape Town. Muddled brown and flat. Poignantly sweet aroma, Hubba Bubba syrup. Terribly flawed throughout. Heavy lingering fumy fermented bubble gum. Another drain pour :( ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

De Garve Golden Blonde
Bottle from store in Cape Town. Golden blonde, yes, with oily film and a putrid heavy stench of sickening diacetyl and bubblegum syrup. The urge to dump before tasting is overridden by nothing but stupidity. The palate and flavors are slightly better, with a semblance of beer hidden beneath the awfully oily lingering butter and cake batter palate. Something went awry; the flavors hint that there might have been a good beer here at one time. It is apparently brand new too. Frightful and sad. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

De Garve Premium Bitter
A very nice beer, with good bitterness, which is rare with most South African attempts at bitters which tend to be too sweet in my opinion. Brilliant colour and finish. One of De Garve’s best beers, along with the Jolly Nun Belgian Ale.

Pale, cloudy appearance with a strong cloves and spices nose, similar to Witbier. Initial taste is of cinnamon and then disappears rather quickly. Finish is toasty and satisfying. Solid beer that is quite refreshing.
