Vens Mild
Cask. Deep brown colour, not far from black, with a small fluffy off-white head. Aroma is roasted malts, some nutty notes as well as toffee and some slight chocolate. Flavour is old coffee, nutty, chocolate, some roasted malts as well as some ashes.

Gravity @ The Cambridge Blue. Pous a clear deep brown with a small, bubbly white head. The aroma’s of light berries and brown sugar. Brown baked bread. The taste is toasty brown bread, some honey and plenty of toffee. Lightly vinous red berry. Slightly creamy mouthfeel. Soft. Overall, a pretty decent bitter that plays it straight.

Cask at the The Sun Inn Summer Beer Festival, Kelvedon. Light haze on this amber beer. Suddy white head. Light dry palate. Nice mellow orange marmalade with generic fruits in the tail. Fresh orange with supermild hop spice. Dry finish. Mild bitter linger.

Cask conditioned handpump GBBF 2011. A dark brown coloured beer with an off-white head. A sour mash mild with vinegar and nutty notes in the aroma. It’s the same in the mouth with some chocolate malts as well. The chocolate is dusty. Not keen on this.

Vens Mild
Cask gravity at Chelmsford Winter BF ’11. Black beer with no head. It’s a dull dark mild. Ugh. Sweaty armpit. I couldn’t drink it.

Vens Pale Ale
Cask gravity at Chelmsford Winter BF ’11. Clear gold colour, bubbly white head. Touch of toffee butter on aroma. Bit of toffee in the mouth and some vague hop sting on the finish. The hop on the finish builds like chili according to my notes. Not a great beer. I don’t like the toffee/butter flavour.

Chelmsford Winter Beer Festival. Loads of beers shared with ChrisO and Harrisoni - Cheers! Opaque black beer with a residual tan head. Light palate. Sweetish dark malt. Tangy and minerally fruity dark malt. Light finish with a citrus and dark malt aftertaste. Decent.

Vens Pale Ale
3rd February 2011
Chelmsford Winter Beer Festival. Loads of beers shared with ChrisO and Harrisoni - Cheers! Clear gold beer, good suddy white head. Softish palate that’s also a little dry. Nicely balanced. A little cream in the malt and some pleasant mild orange and grapefruit bitterness. Nice. A touch of carbonation would have provided some bite.

Vens Mild
Cask (gravity dispense). Beer #12 at Chelmsford Winter Beer Festival on 3 February 2011. A very dark mild. Near black and almost opaque. Roasty and quite full bodied. Plenty of flavour. Some chocolate. Maybe just a little sweet. Very promising and better than the Pale Ale from the same (new) brewery that I tried just before.

Vens Pale Ale
Cask (gravity dispense). Beer #6 at Chelmsford Winter Beer Festival on 3 February 2011. A new brewery for me. Gold colour. Straightforward, with a little citric hop. Perfectly respectable but, as a strongish golden ale, didn’t really deliver enough hop punch or general oomph to really impress.
