Compasses Bitter
On cask (gravity dispense) at Chelmsford Beer Festival on 15 July 2011. Bright amber/ copper colour. No head. A little condition. Slightly worty "home brew" malt aroma. Otherwise a serviceable, fairly standard traditional-style bitter with more malt than hop. Seemed a bit of a work in progress to me - understandable for a brand new brewery. Flagged for re-rate..

Compasses Special
On cask (gravity dispense) at Chelmsford Beer Festival on 15 July 2011. This is an interesting development. The Compasses used to be the brewery tap for Ridleys brewery, one of the few remaining old-established country brewers (in an idyllic setting) until they sold out to Greene King and the brewery was closed. Now the pub is back under the ownership of a member of the Ridley family and there may be plans to install a brewery. In the meantime they are brewing at Felstar. Unfortunately this beer wasn’t really to my taste. A copper coloured best bitter with Crystal malt character prominent. Caramel, nutty notes and sweet fruit. Quite low on hops and not very bitter. Perfectly competent, just not really my type of beer.

Compasses Best
Cask at Thurrock Beer Festival 2011, Grays, England.
Clear dark copper colour with tiny frothy head. Dark bitter hops and woody maltiness in aroma. Bitter dark hops in flavour. Slightly watery.
