1 Golden Coast California Oak Mead On tap at barrel republic pours a crisp golden. Nose is very light honey with oak. Taste is no honey sweetness. This is so bad and this is the kind of stuff that gives mead a bad name. Sunday, November 5, 2017

4.5 Golden Coast Something Something Sour Mead I'm surprised so many people didn't like this one. I'm not much of a mead drinker but I love sour ales. I have a feeling everyone expected a tart mead, but this instead tastes more like a geuze or a tart champagne. They probably also poured all the yeast into the glass, which will negatively impact the flavor and appearance. If you don't like sours, you won't like this. If you do, you'll love it. 3.2 Golden Coast Orange Blossom Tap at Draught 55 as a freebie! Very light looking pour not all that different than sakes I just had. Nose is rich honey and orange. Tastes of oranges, florals, lemon, honey, candied sugar some grassy tones. Semi sweet and watery. Tuesday, April 4, 2017

2.8 Golden Coast Ginger Hibiscus On tap at Golden Coast, pours a hazy bright pinkish ruby red with a small pink-tinged white head. Aroma brings out aggressive ginger upfront, with subdued hibiscus, no honey notes. Flavour is quite spicy, with tons of fresh ginger skins upfront. Not really getting the hibiscus or any sweetness. A ginger bomb. Meh. Sunday, February 12, 2017

2.9 Golden Coast Tiki On tap at Golden Coast, pours cloudy golden orange with a small white head. Aroma brings out tons of wildflower honey upfront, followed by the bitters, vanilla and pineapple. Flavour is quite different, with tons of the bitters leaving a boozy and astringent feel, and only subtle traces of the other adjuncts. Not very convinced by this. Fun stuff but not overly enjoyable. Sunday, February 12, 2017

2.4 Golden Coast Hopped Honey On tap at Golden Coast, pours a hazy dull yellow with a small white head. Aroma brings out strange stale hop characteristics, with no notice of the honey. Flavour is odd, with a stale herbal hop character, dry honey and biscuity notes. Seltzery quality on the finish, with the crisp carbonation. Not fussed about this one. Sunday, February 12, 2017

2.7 Golden Coast Gruit On tap at Golden Coast, pours cloudy dull beige with a small white head. Aroma brings out lots of heather and other earthy spices. Flavour is bone dry and extremely earthy and spicy. This is exactly as advertised, but there is little depth or honey presence. Not very intrigued by this. Sunday, February 12, 2017
mcberko |
2.7 Golden Coast Spiced Clover On tap at Golden Coast, pours a hazy beige with a small white head. Aroma brings out a jumbled mix of spices, none of them really out front or discernible above others. Flavour is light-medium sweet, with a seltzery character and jumbled spices. Finishes with cinnamon. It’s okay. Sunday, February 12, 2017

3.6 Golden Coast California Oak Mead On tap at Golden Coast, pours a clear beige with a small white head. Aroma brings out light oak and fairly low wildflower honey presence. Flavour is very oaky, with a wonderful oak barrel character and just a touch of honey. Very dry, with only the slightest hint of sweetness. Carbonation is aggressive but fitting. Loving the oak character here. Really good unusual mead. Sunday, February 12, 2017

2.9 Golden Coast Orange Blossom On tap at Golden Coast, pours a hazy full blonde with a small white head. Aroma brings out lots of wild nectar notes and a very floral quality to the honey. Flavour is very dry, with floral notes and lots of honey nectar. Very low residual sweetness and no notice of the alcohol. Not overly complex, but pleasant enough. Sunday, February 12, 2017

3.5 Golden Coast Orange Blossom Bottle from Julienne. Pours clear pale gold with almost no head. The bottle erupted with carbonation though, aged 1.5 years. Tastes like honey, cereal, sweet champagne, orange, floral, and sourdough. Light body and high carbonation. Smells like honey, cereal, dough, and candied orange. Monday, November 7, 2016

3.4 Golden Coast Orange Blossom Bottle; and it’s a gusher!! Pours somewhere between clear and milky pale yellow depending on how much of the yeast in bottle finds its way into the glass (thanks for the milky one snoworsummer!!). Aroma is honey, vanilla, light oak, faint citrus, and faint booze. Flavor matches the aroma and is decently sweet with it drying out with some woody notes at the finish. Unfortunately, the bottle refermentation that occurred and created the volcano when the bottle was opened also caused it to become overcarbonated to champagne levels of fizzy and makes it hard to discern the flavors underneath. Medium body. Monday, November 7, 2016

3.4 Golden Coast Sausage Boys Mead Taster at the meadery. Clear golden pour. No actual meat in this, just sausage spices. It definitely has a meaty flavor though, spiced, earthy, honey sweetness, floral, some herbs, cumin, and a little bit of a bite. Weird, but it works relatively well. Wednesday, July 20, 2016

4.2 Golden Coast Sour Orange Blossom Picked up a bottle at Whole Foods near Logan Square in DC. Chilled in my hotel room ice bucket, poured into a plastic cup - classy! I do not like the nose on this. There is something phenolic / acetone / off in it, and I could smell it right when I opened the bottle. Either my sense of smell has been attenuated or the off notes I was getting in the nose of this mead has faded after a few minutes. Getting more pineapple and citrus now. The mead pours hazy - odd, since nearly every other mead I have had has been clear. The mead is carbonated, though mildly so. Taste is fascinating. Citrus. Lactic acid tartness in the finish, but before you get there, there are some really nice floral orange honey notes. Thanks guys, now I need to make a sour mead. Wednesday, March 2, 2016

2.8 Golden Coast Something Something Sour Mead On tap at Gingerman after Comic Con. Pours a clear gold no head. Cider, funk, honey, diacetyl on the nose. Sweet tarts, citric acid candies, war heads, popcorn jelly beans, funk. Long sweet tarts with faint honey. Maybe tastes like Spree instead of Sweet Tarts. Not great. Saturday, January 16, 2016

2.9 Golden Coast Something Something Sour Mead Bottle carried home from CA by Willrunforbeer. Slightly hazy yellow. Aroma is a bit odd, butter, beeswax and green apples, really strange. The flavor is nearly as strange... Movie butter popcorn? It’s not as sour, rather artificial strange notes. Some really off tartness that maybe shouldn’t be place in a mead. Cool idea I guess?
