Nail Creek Belgian Double
A: Hazy Orange/Amber, Great Off White head, No Lacing S: Banana, Clove, Corriander T: Banana, Clove, Corriander M: Great Carbonation, Light to Medium Bodied, Sweet, Spicy Overall, for their first beer, it was a great start. They were advertising their other original release of a Breakfast Stout but it was kicked already. I look forward to coming back here when in town to try out their other upcoming offerings.

Nail Creek Belgian Strong
Mar. 15, 2013; on tap at the Utica (NY) brewpub. First visit to Nail Creek, and was very pleasantly surprised by the local offering. Dark, full-bodied, fairly-complex, unmistakably "Belgian". Looking forward to having pen in hand for a more detailed rating on the next sample.

Nail Creek Belgian Strong
In short: A rich sweet fruity attack and a citric semi-dry finish. Drinkable strong blond ale.
How: Tap at brewpub.
The look: Clear dark blond body topped by an off-white ring of foam.
In long: Nose is semi-toasted honeyed cereals and a slice of those deep fried bananas dessert. Taste is quite sweet on the attack, very rich bready cereals with plenty of sweet juicy fruits covered with liquefied honey. A rich fruitiness that focuses on exotic fruits such as passion fruits, kiwis and others. Then the citric and grassy hops partially dry out the finish without adding much bitterness. I had three glasses of Nail Creek beers at this brewpub and I found each beer to be a bit “off” yet I also found each of them fun to drink. It might be the freshness of brewpub beers once again raising my score or something else in their beers I can’t explain. There were many things wrong with this brewpub, drunk frat boys, loud music, ugly decoration, even the message in the bathroom stall “for the worst sex ever call…” didn’t get my number right.

Nail Creek Breakfast Stout
In short: A viscous amateurish stout that is surprisingly enjoyable.
How: Tap at brewpub.
The look: Black body topped by a very small tan head.
In long: Nose is roasted, some asphalt, a bit inky. Taste is a bit viscous, blackened malts, chocolate ice-cream, soy sauce, tar, vanilla. A bit sticky in the finish. Very full body and pleasant active carbonation, I liked the mouthfeel. Those few sentences where I list flavor elements sure don’t paint the picture of a good beer, yet drinking my glass was an enjoyable experience. This was a fun amateurish beer where the off-flavors work well together. A guilty pleasure. Nail Creek is not the greatest brewpub ever, but it is worth visiting if like me you’ve always wanted to drive a luxury car, in which case all you have to do is drive whatever you have thought rural Upstate New York.

Nail Creek Belgian Double
In short: A toasted caramelized nutty ale. Satisfying.
How: Tap at brewpub.
The look: Cloudy dark amber body topped by a small beige head.
In long: Nose is medium-toasted, fruity esters, light phenolic notes. Taste is toasted bread crust, rich caramel, unexpected fresh bananas, roasted peanuts, some lactic notes, dried fruits, leafy hops adding an iced-tea flavor. Finish is very toasted and with an iced-tea after-taste. Medium body with medium carbonation. The beer does include some of the usual Abbey Dubbel elements but overall I don’t think it is a faithful representation of this elusive style that so few American brewpubs get right, especially in the mouthfeel department. However, even if not true to the Abbey Dubbel style, I thought this was an enjoyable toasted caramelized nutty ale of some kind, nourishing yet easy to drink. I was sitting quietly at this packed brewpub with a younger student crowd, I was writing my beer notes on my laptop and I could feel all these young people looking at me and promising themselves they would never turn out like me someday.

Nail Creek Breakfast Stout
Nice strong coffee and maple syrup aroma. Pours a deep opaque brown with a few tan bubbles ringing the glass. Delicuous, full bodied roasty stout that adds to the aroma with a throaty bitter malt. Very nice. From the tap at their brewpub.

Nail Creek Saison
Cloudy amber beer pours from the tap entirely without head. Very sweet beer with a hint of tartness and also, a hint of beer. Tastes more like juice than a beer. Kind of like lindemans framboise with slightly less tartness and slightly less alcohol. Not terrible but I’d prefer this to taste less like beer candy and more like a traditional saison.
