3.7 Stradaregina Tangerine Cream 19 May 2019. At SWAFFF!, Brussels. Cheers Anke, Erwin & Ama Deke! Cloudy black, lasting, small, frothy, dark beige head. Aroma of toast, biscuit, brownie, fondant, mocha, pistachio, walnut, earth, fig. Taste is medium malty sweet, biscuity & creamy with hints of caramel, dried dark fruits (fig, raisin) & vanilla custard, balanced by bitter notes of coffee roast & nuts that lead towards a dryish, earthy hoppy finish where toast & biscuit linger; the alcohol is nicely warming, reminiscent of coffee liqueur. Medium body, slick-oily texture, fizzy carbonation. Tasty but not overwhelming. Sunday, June 16, 2019

3.7 Stradaregina 100 IBU Draft sample @ Swafff '19. Monday, May 20, 2019

2.8 Stradaregina Lambicocca Draft sample @ Swafff '19. Monday, May 20, 2019

3.4 Stradaregina Lambicocca I Draught /I Small off-white rim, veiled yellow-golden beer. Indifferent sourish, not unlike rhubarb + pineapple. Sourish, again rhubarb and unripe pineapple. Lemon or lime, certainly lots of lactic and even acetic acid. Enamel-etching sourness, lactic acidbomb, dry-out effect, acidthinning & -burn. Phew. Would work excellent for a vinaigrette. 3.8 Stradaregina Barrel IPA 2017 - Marinka, Denali, Vic Secret One of several barrel aged IPAs - a seemingly contradictory idea that can result in very tasty beers - by this microbrewery in Lombardy, one I had never heard of before I stumbled on this bottle, bought online at Fermenthings. Hopped with Denali (a modern German hop related to Nugget but allegedly more intense), Vic Secret (the more familiar 'tropical fruit' hop developed in Australia in 2013) and Marinka (another new, still very local and unknown Polish variety). Stylish bottle with nice glossy label. Off-white, thin and very loosely knit 'head', quickly reduced to a thin ring of small bubbles and eventually disappearing altogether, over a lightly hazed, warm pale orangey-tinged apricot golden beer. Interesting nose of old dry and crumbling abbey cheese, damp straw, dried peaches, pickled apricots, Chardonnay wine, green olives, dusty stable, horse steak spiced with white pepper, dried out mango flesh, dried grapefruit peel, old stale apple juice, some 'old hop urine', soaking wet wood chips, pineapple. Very fruity onset, apple cider, pineapple, apricot, light persimmon, sweetish but with a pronounced sourish undertone creating an almost white wine-like side effect and drying the palate in an elegant manner; soft carbonation, slick, oily mouthfeel. Pleasant but thinnish (also due to the undercarbonation) cereally and lightly biscuity malt base, dried by that wine-like tartness and eventually by the dusty, cheese rind-, stale urine-, olive- and dried grapefruit-like remains of the hops, which, even if most of the expected tropical fruitiness has obviously faded, still add outspoken, resinous, peppery and pleasantly lingering bitterness to the finish, playing with the fruity esteriness and the dry, very tannic, noble wood effect. Ends a tad 'warming' even if it is only 5.5% ABV, ideal for a chilly autumn evening. Obviously the hops turn all cheesy and dried out citrus peel-like when a well-hopped IPA is submitted to the barrel treatment and I must admit that when I was first confronted with this idea (I believe in Dochter van de Korenaar's Renaissance series), I was quite skeptical about it, but most of the - still relatively few - examples I had so far, were really interesting beers. It is indeed fascinating to see how the hops' properties are bent and changed, as they probably did when 'historical' IPA arrived in India after shipping, which provided the inspiration for many of these barrel aged IPAs; this one is a very tasty, almost 'funky' beer, not unlike a dry-hopped sour ale, but with far less emphasis on sourness than on hops with that sourness remaining soft and gentle and creating a wine-like, indeed elegantly vinous effect and almost making it feel stronger than it really is. Viewed from that angle, this is a very - modern - Italian beer as well. Enjoyed it, even in the virtual absence of head retention and sparkling effervescence. Sunday, November 4, 2018
