Comme dit mon copain d'enfance : wait and see ! ) Friday, December 15, 2023

3.3 Vliet Amber Small yellow head over veiled orangeish amber beer. Herbs and malts. The latter slightly toasted, partly cookie malt. Sweetish, candi sugar. Bit fruity esters, as peach and pear, fruitdrops. Bitter first oral impression, herbal and hoppy. Malts underneath strong enough, bready. Bit peppery finish and aftertaste. Unfortunately, bitterness is a bit crude, leafy. Medium bodied at best, thinnish finish, acquiring an almondy streak. Good carbonation. There's plenty Spéciale Belges with more refinement. Still, not bad. I Thanks to Stef! /I Wednesday, June 22, 2022

2.6 Vliet Dubbel 33cl bottle at home (11 VII 2021), as Vliet Dubbel. A reddish gloomed 6.5 ABV brew with brown unclear body and a white to beige frothy head. This rock candy sugared Belgian dubbel from Huisbrouwerij De Vliet has some offtune malt and sweet features, faint hints of oxblood and liquorice. There is some dark wood in there as well. The nose is nothing special though, with yeast and earthy flavours adding to the traditional Belgian beer experience. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with light carbonation, semi-sweet and hinting at few plums, fig, prunes and other fruits. The palate is not overly sweet, with features of cheap sugar, diet coke and discounter chocolate bars. The ending has different spices, ranging from ginger, black pepper and floral herbs. 4.5 Vliet Tripel Tastes a bit like Westvleteren blond mixed with Westmalle tripel. (The creamy and well balanced mouthfeel of Westvleteren blond and the deep boozy banana taste of Westmalle tripel). A very tasty, unique beer. Monday, August 3, 2020

3.5 Vliet Spelt One of two spelt beers (a strong one and this more sessionable one) made by this ‘home brewery’ gone commercial a few years ago. Steinie bottle from Drinkshall Geenen in Balen. Tick, frothy and pillowy, snow white, cobweb-lacing, stable head, lightly hazy pale golden robe with vague apricot tinge. Aroma of banana peel, white bread, melting margarine, green apple, sweetclover, hard pear, streaw, soggy chicken food, soap, hint raw celeriac. Crisp onset, fruity banana, pear and green apple notes, very light bubblegummy touch, fizzy yet nowhere harshly stinging carbonation; soft fluffy, doughy malt sweetish middle with indeed a soapy and dry-grainy aspect clearly coming from the spelt. Quite pronounced minerally side aspects accompany this malty, grainy and ‘green-fruity’ profile, almost to a point of vague saltiness in the end; meanwhile, a grassy and floral hoppiness develops, providing mild but perfectly balancing bitterness (it does not need much more for a Belgian blonde since this one is not too sweet to begin with, contrary to many others in this style). Technically perfectly executed, very well-balanced, quenching, soft and pleasant Belgian blonde ale, better than expected and better than average in this – let’s be frank – boring and overly exposed style. Moutige neus, beetje citrus. Vervelend zoete en moutige kandijsmaak die aanhoudt. Zwakke hopsmaak. Redelijk wat restsuikers. Redelijke carbonatie. Alcohol komt er matig door. Zwak, te zoet bier, met weinig karakter. Saturday, September 22, 2018

3.8 Vliet Spelt Thickly hazed yellow-gold, ample fulsome foam. Distinctly lemony, grainy nose, like sorbet and cracked wheat, very enticing. Softly bitter, dryish, with a light (lemony) acidity. Utterly refreshing, and a spelt beer that tastes like one. Bottle says brewed at Proef. Thursday, September 14, 2017

Medium body. Smaak: zoet-zuur start, granig, beetje kruidig, gist, bitterig, (lichtfruitig) citrus, en toch tikje zurigheid. Maar alles in balans. Aangename dorstlesser ideaal bij warmer weer. 3.2 Vliet Tripel Bottle 33cl bought at Dranken Marlou in Zonhoven. Pours hazy golden with a big white fluffy head. Nose: candy sugar, honey, hints of hop, malts. taste: medium carbonation, starts sweet: (honey, candy sugar) (bit overbalanced) but still pleasant followed by hints of malt and hops with an alcoholic warm feeling. A bit sharp in the end, even a bit metallic and slightly dry with a sweet touch. Just another basic tripel to me, not bad but not wow either. Tuesday, June 21, 2016

CONCLUSION : bière malheureusement très en dessous de son nez prodigieux ... 3.2 Vliet Tripel Tripel from a hobby brewery in Geel commissioned through the Proef, bought at Prik & Tik in Zele today. Moussy, off-white, densely structured head leaving a steady rim and some minimal lacing as well as a ’veil’ over the whole surface of the beer, which has a warm ’old gold’ colour with peachy hue, lightly hazy at first. Aroma of peach, overripe pineapple, some banana, ripe pear, white bread dough, sweet apple cake, chamomille, honey, dry earth, damp straw, cooked potato, gooseberry and a very vague hint of H2S (rotting egg) but vague enough not to become all too offensive. Spritzy, estery onset of dried apricot, unripe gooseberry and green banana - in other words, subdued fruit sweetishness and sourishness, strongly tingling carbo, yeasty spicy notes everywhere till the end; bready malt phase in the middle, bit grainy, supple yet ’full’. Finishes malty with additions of floral, earthy hoppiness, yielding some herbal aromas retronasally along with the fruity esters and spicy phenols, palpable yeastiness further accentuating the bready character of this beer, and after swallowing, clearly warming, ’jenever’- or wodka-like alcohol which somehow manages to show up late enough not to ’subvert’ the rest of the flavor profile. The expected cliché Belgian tripel of course, as there are way too many around to this day, but by itself very acceptable and even enjoyable if you are into this style: not perfect, but not too flawed either, with sufficiently restrained sweetness and sufficiently pronounced bitterness, which is often not the case. Quite alright. Wednesday, May 4, 2016
