(Bottle 64 cl) Pours a clear reddish brown with a creamy, beige head. Sweetish aroma of hard roasted malt and vanilla. Medium body with sweetish hard roasted malt and vanilla accents. The finish is dry with a hint of bitterness from the malts. Much better than what could be expected from reading previous ratings. 100908

640ml bottle b/b 31Oct07. Tucked at the back of the fridge so should be well matured. Sadly, hasn’t lasted the distance. Pours nicely but sadly that is as good as it got. Hints at what it could have been - if only..........

Limburg India Pale Ale
I am pleased that the sample beerledgend sent me was in the same condition as those recently rated. I was concerned that it had aged in a negative way and that my perception of the high phenols were based on the bottle imperfection rather than the brew. The obvious conterpoint is that it is very disappointing that this is a major factor in the beer. You can pick it in both nose and taste which really detracts from the beer. From the intitial pour I was hopeful that the beer was going to be special with that pleasing caramel body and creamy head. Any nose of positive note came through in a citric spiciness and hint of aroma hop. The flavour also indicated its character as an IPA but overall the acidic sharpness in the finish is a real disappoinment. Thanks anyway to Chris for his generosity.

Limburg India Pale Ale
Pours a hazy dark orange with a lasting head. A spiciness on the nose from the yeast but also from English noble hops, aromas of orange and marmalade, a barley-sugar type lolly sweetness. Plenty of yeast spice character in the taste. Falvours of yeast spiciness dominate giving falvours of clove, nutmeg and cinnamon. Lacking some malt character, just the sweet lolly malt of the pale malt but nothing else. BItterness is balanced with a slight hint of astringency near the end. The yeast profile seems a little wrong to me. I prefer the Hopsmacker as a Pale Ale to this one.

Creamy tan head topping a dark brown to black beer. Aroma of Coffee, dusty paper, marmite with fruit and spice from the yeast (a combination of clove, cinnamon and nutmeg). A lovely creamy mouth feel. Flavour has a dominance of yeast fruit and spice, strong chocolate and slight coffee flavour, full bitterness and a pleasant warming alcohol. An interesting beer to taste with many layers. Ideal for sharing a bottle with a friend.

Limburg India Pale Ale
Tasted 23/12/2006. 640ml bottle from RW&S, Wellington. Deep rose gold, near bright, very lightly carbonated, with a creamy off-white head. Lots of caramel malt on those nose, with a little hop and a background of the classic Limburg house note - woody spice. A little phenolic in the mouth, which doesn’t quite work, but there’s a lot of caramel malt that hides that. Medium-low hop bitterness. Lovely soft carbonation and medium-heavy weight but the unpleasant, and lingering, phenolic finish really hampers the palate. Missed the mark for me.

1999 Vintage. Dark brown color, burnt raisins, molasses, chocolate, wheat nose. Intense, full rich body with brown sugar, burnt raisins, wheat chocolate. Lingering burnt raisin finish. Very intense. This is the only Wiezen^bock that is better than Aventinus. This is truely a world class beer, but they don’t make it any more.

Tasted 15/09/2006. Leftover rigger from BrewNZ. These thoughts are from myself, tyrrell and bmackenzie... Pours a burnished copper, bright, with no head at all and just a tingle of carbonation (we’re drinking this a little warm, perhaps, at about 15c). Sweet malt - almost syrup-like - on the nose, with barley sugar, marmalade, a slight meatiness and a definite sherry-like oxidation character. Tyrrell is reminded of barley being toasted for haggis at Miro Street. Tempting and quite lovely. More malt sweetness in the mouth; toffee and liquorice in the middle; a warming alcohol and spice finish, bordering on hot; and a late lingering bitterness. More meatiness and sweet toasty malts linger on the palate. Softly carbonated and a full weight. I tried this first at BrewNZ 2005 and thought it was good but needed a bit more age to mellow. This taste proves it - a truly fantastic NZ ale! Well done to the Limburg team. We opened a Chimay Bleu after this, which seemed almost bland on comparison.

Limburg Rosies Fianna
Tasted 14/09/2006. Rigger from BrewNZ. Deep garnet, bright, with a disappearing off-white airy head. All crystal and roasted malts on the nose. Nutty malts up front, and through the middle, followed by a pushy roasted finish and a very gentle hop smack. Mild fruitiness and toast on the palate. Maybe a little soapy through the middle-end and slightly hot in the finish but otherwise very drinakable. Lingering roastiness. Good pub beer, quite sessional.

Limburg Porter
Tasted 27/07/2006. Surprise find. 640ml bottle from Regional Wines and Spirits. Dark brown, almost lack with garnet and golden hues. Creamy tan head disappates into a faint ring. Plummy hints on the nose at first, follwed by a strong biscuit and roast malt aroma. Dry in the mouth, more dark fruit notes, a little nutty, with some sweetness in the background and a roasty, strongly astringent in the finish. Burnt notes lingers immensely. Good medium body, perhaps just a touch too dry and light from the carbonation. A good dark offering from a brewery that had specialised in pretty pale beers until now. UPDATE: Subsequent tastings revealed a strong phenolic character making my first "Hefe-porter". I guess one of other Limburg yeasts got into the act. Very oxidised too. Ghastly.

Bottled - thanks Beer Legend. This is a big beer, pours a nice deep red-brown colour with a creamy head. A rich fruity malt and molasses nose with a fair dollop of alcohol as well. Body is smooth , rich and thick - almost chewy. Flavour is quite complex with stewed grapes, golden syrup, and sticky date pudding with a fairly bitter dry finish for balance. The alcohol remains well hidden, this is bloody nice impressive stuff.

Limburg Rosies Red
Tasted 07/05/2005. 1.25L flagon from the Limburg Brewery via courier. Pours a gorgeous, bright, red amber with a thin off white head that disappears. Big, tending huge, grassy hop bouquet with faint a hints of citrus and apple. Some toasty, caramelly, malt aroma gets through too. Big hop flavour doen’t surpirse. Light mouthfeel delivers a crisp, cleansing, grassy flavour with only the faintest sweetness that make me think this is a superb ale for between courses during a nice meal or to get onto straight after work. Some caramel malts show through atwarmer temps. Palate is left with a lasting citrus bitterness that fades just in time for the next glass. Another hop lovers beer from Limburg.

Limburg Weissbier
Tasted 02/05/2005. 330ml bottle from New World, Miramar. Pours a murky yellow with a large, almost uncontrollable, sudsy looking, white head. Aroma is predominantly of green apple chewy lollies with hints of banana, spices and yoghurt. Sweet flavour up front with more suggestion of apple plus wheat. Spicey through the middle with very little bitterness. Watery mouthfeel and palate. This one is a little too thin and overly carbonated. I remember it being better. Disappointing that there are no batch details.

Appearance was a bit on the over cloudy side if that is possible. Aroma offers banana and caramel with hints of clove. Flavour is typical for the style with a long palate that goes from banana in to caramel. Bottled, at Paddy’s Brewpub, Flemington, Australia.
Foggy blond body. Flavour and aroma were really no descript for me at this stage of the night. Weisse beers were being through on the back of stouts and chocolate porters. Stouts were being contrast and shared with pilsners and bocks. It was frenzy time.

much more on the bocky than the weizen side of weizenbock. way darker than i expected - murky dark brown. smells bizarre - glue, vegetables, salt. taste is dominated by intense toffee, from decoction mashing. you barely notice the wheat until the end when you get a bit of chocolatey graininess emerging. it's way thick and chewy - no tartness or acidity to cut through like in aventinus. bit of a mess, but then i'm a bit bigoted towards bocky beers.

This beer has an interesting yeasty flavour similar to what is found in their wheat beers. The flavour is citric overall (from hops) but somewhat sour (from yeast). I'd prefer some more crispness, bite, and malt flavour. The yeasty flavours that work in their wheats are definitely out of place in this beer.

Dark yellow, slightly orange cloudy colour. The head is very thin and weak, not tall and rocky as it should be. The aroma is great, though. Intense banana. Nice fruity flavour, with banana dominating. Well rounded. The fruitiness works better here than in their wit. The appeareance of this beer leaves more to be desired, but the aroma and flavour make up for it. mmmmmm . . . . banana.
