Wide taste spectrum and medium aftertaste with sour fruits. Some honey. Medium body with medium carbonation. Overall, super-high quality product with vivid, slightly funky and sour strong nuances of highly overaged apple, ananas. Also nice malty backbone. Taste is a bit muted, primarily lemon, earth, citrus, floral notes, fruit. Very good flavors, not overly complicated, sharp and bright. Palate is medium bodied, good carbonation, fairly drinkable. 3.4 Backacre Sour Golden Ale: Blend 7 Sergey’s hunt; 7.3% ABV; BL07 (if it means anything; maybe Blend 07) Cloudy golden color. Nice aroma, wet cellar and cobwebs, some Lambic, funky. The mouthfeel is a bit oily; strong acidity, lemony character that blends well with mild funky character, and light cheesy tough. Somehow, it has some Lambic character in it. Very good. 4 Backacre Sour Golden Ale: Blend 7 From notes. Somehow this drinking session evaded my developments. Enjoyed at Doug’s house on October 28. 750 mL bottle, Blend #7. The pour is a darker clear gold color with a thin and bubbly white head that doesn’t leave any lace as it disappears. The aroma is good. There is a bright sour right up front that is lovely. The barnyard and funkiness come through in the back end and it’s just kind of bretty. The flavor is a little sweeter. There is a light funk, some barnyard dustiness, and a decent lemon zest to it. It’s interesting. The mouth feel is light and clean with a touch of syrupy tendency and a brighter carbonation with a lingeringly tart and funky finish. Not too bad. Thursday, February 2, 2017

4 Backacre Sour Golden Ale: Blend 8 Blend #8. Delightful interpretation of a classic, blended Belgian sour ale. There’s a good amount of barnyard funk in the aroma and flavor, as well as a moderate sour bite, and the combination is fantastic. Excellent, ambitious beer from one of Vermont’s really hidden gems. 3.9 Backacre Sour Golden Ale: Blend 7 750mL bottle. Batch 07. Pours hazy gold with a small, quickly-dissipating white head. Aroma is yeast funk, oak, and green apple. Taste is white grapes, green apple, lactic acid, brett, brine, earth, hints of lemon, and vinegar. A tad strong on the vinegar, especially towards the finish, giving it an odd but pleasant character - vinegar feels closer to that of a sour red than your usual wild or gueuze. Dry finish. Body is on the lighter side of medium. Carbonation is medium bordering on lively. Crisp mouthfeel. Sunday, October 30, 2016

Saturday, December 19, 2015

3.7 Backacre Sour Golden Ale (Blend not Specified / Unkwown) Thanks to koopa for sharing. Pours a very hazy, dark golden yellow color with a one finger, frothy white head that quickly settles into a lasting ring. Streaks of spotty lacing left behind. Musty, earthy aroma with subtle brine and lactic funk character along with earthy barrel notes and sweet stone fruits. Decent barnyard/funky bug presence with lacto, citrus acidity and dry oak along with some peach and light vinous notes. Medium bodied with a stronger barrel presnce than expected. Slightly briny with some lactic funk, musty cobweb and a decent amount of acetic acid yet never becomes harsh or solvent like. Sour and acidic but not overwhelmingly so with puckering funk and subtle salty flavors. Somewhat like a saison/farmhouse and wild ale hybrid with subtle spice and musty funk followed by toasted oak, wild bugs, citrus acidity and a lingering acetic, slight vinegar-like presence in the finish. Fortunately, there is nice balance and the farmhouse characteristics aren’t completely overpowered. Tart and puckering but not harsh at all, remaining delicate and easy to drink. This beer didn’t completely blow me away but it’s a solid first offering from these guys. Thursday, November 12, 2015

4.5 Backacre Sour Golden Ale (Blend not Specified / Unkwown) Tasted on 10/15/14, my 30th birthday! Big thanks to Alex for finding this one in Vermont for me. Pours very light, clear pale yellow with a thick white head that slowly recedes to a thick collar and spotty lace. The nose is incredibly complex with a bunch of funk and earth, a touch of oak, some citrus pith tartness, floral pitted fruit, amazing. The flavor is not as intense in any facet, but super balanced and delicious with all of the same earthy, funky, tart, and fruity complexity, with a bit more oaky malt than the nose. The body is just under medium with average but smooth carbonation and a long complex finish that starts off mostly tart, moving to the funk, and featuring the light oak for quite some time.
