3.1 Hancock & Co Colonial Wheat Ale Pours golden, small white head, tiny bubbles. It’s not cloudy like you would expect a wheat beer, nor is there much wheat aroma. It’s very much like an American style wheat that leans towards a light lager. Only very subtle citrus flavour from yeast and hops, and slightly bitter. Not bad, but it’s more of a lager than a wheat beer. Tuesday, June 9, 2015

2.5 Hancock & Co Cardinal Red Ale Pours amber red with light white head and nice champagne like bubbles. Smells like sour dough and malt. Tastes like it smells very malty with a slight sourness and bitterness. Hops bitterness is present, but hop flavour is not. I’ve had worse. Tuesday, June 9, 2015

3.1 Hancock & Co Grand Pale Ale Slightly surprised this is called an APA, as is is maltier and less hoppy than expected, but true to the label. Moderate aroma, but big taste of nuts, tobacco & herbs. Re-rated, this now has a vegemite aftertaste, which has persisted as I’m working through a dozen bottles. Downgraded from good to OK Tuesday, February 10, 2015

2.5 Hancock & Co Colonial Wheat Ale Bread and banana cake aroma. Mildly cloudy pale golden colour. Yeasty bread and banana flavours. Little evidence of hops. Lightly carbonated with furry spicy bread aftertaste. Not my cup of tea but a good example of a wheat beer nonetheless Monday, March 3, 2014

3 Hancock & Co Cardinal Red Ale Malty grainy aroma. Pours ruby red with the head quickly dissipating leaving hardly any lace. Sweet crisp taste with reasonable carbonation. Finishes with a strong lingering bitter hoppy aftertaste. Not much of an ipa/red ale man but its not too bad Sunday, March 2, 2014

2.6 Hancock & Co Cardinal Red Ale Caramel with citrus, pretty subdued aroma, bright, colour is closer to amber more than red, vigourous pour, head doesn?t last, no lacing, lacking head and body. Caramel and honey sweetness dominate the flavours, wife got peach.. lingering bitterness, not out of character or unpleasant though, light body, high carb. A oncer Thursday, January 9, 2014

3 Hancock & Co Cardinal Red Ale Very malty and very sweet. I wonder whether this will have a future. I quite like it, but I usually swim against the currents... Wednesday, December 4, 2013

3.4 Hancock & Co Cardinal Red Ale I do love a red ale, so this needs to be a heavy hitter to score well in the book of Jimthechap. It seems ruby-amber in colour with a faint skim of off-white head with a few lines of sparkle emitted from the base of the glass. The aroma leans toward resinous amber malts, some biscuitiness, toffeeish sweetness and some good stewed stonefruit. This is manifest in the flavour that offers some twinges of bitterness and a body of sweetness. I do like this and it definitely passes the ’another one Jim?’ test. It screams session and it’s a pleasant enough beer. Saturday, November 23, 2013

3 Hancock & Co Colonial Wheat Ale As it says on the label, golden, wild honey colour but with a film of white head across the body of the glass. The aroma is of lemon curd and starchy straw and this is reflected in the flavour, which is sweetish and then gently acidic leaving an intriguing honeycomb quality. Nice enough in its own way I suppose, but not massively memorable. Sunday, October 13, 2013

4 Hancock & Co Grand Pale Ale Darker golden colour than I expected, aroma of slightly sweet hay. Easy drinking, full round flavour. Nice rounded hops not too strong. Slightly nutty, really well balanced finish on the palate. Medium sweet, slick texture, soft carbonation and a very long, mellow well balanced finished. I really like it. 3.5 Hancock & Co Bismark Brown Ale Best of the range so far, I think. The motto for this beer seems to be ’Keep it Simple’ and it really suits this simple, yet satisfying beer. Sunday, June 9, 2013

2.9 Hancock & Co Colonial Wheat Ale Pours a very cloudy golden colour. Little bit honeyed on the palate and has little carbonation making this an easy beer to imbibe. Lacks a little on the flavour front for my liking, but I can see this beer working well for people who want an introduction to craft. Not overly "wheaty" as well which will help the cause. 0.5 Hancock & Co Grand Pale Ale Possibly the nastiest beer I’ve tried so far this year. Unpleasantly cloudy with a wet cardboard aroma and dull, murky palate. Just another in a long line up of sily attempts by New Zealand’s big breweries to try and fool the public with fake craft beer. To paraphrase Monty Python, ’This is not a beer for drinking. This is a beer for laying down and avoiding. Saturday, April 20, 2013

3.5 Hancock & Co Grand Pale Ale Very bitter. The label mentions among other things nuances of tobacco, and man I’m getting that in spades. Reminds me of when I was a practising smoker rolling cigarettes and getting stray strand of tobacco on my tongue. Well, not quite that intense. To be honest, this is a slow sipping beer for me, it’s not quite balanced enough for me to want another one immediately. Sunday, March 31, 2013

3.1 Hancock & Co Cardinal Red Ale Roasted malt on the nose with hints of caramel. Not the biggest of beers but for its meagre 4.4% it fights above its weight. Little thin on the palate. Thursday, March 7, 2013

4.2 Hancock & Co Cardinal Red Ale What a great beer. These guys are coming out with nice simple main line beers. Can’t wait to what these guys do next. I emailed them and the reply I got was "We are launching as a simple 4x 330 ml pack then we plan on doing some higher abv, higher hop and some very different type beers" Saturday, February 2, 2013

3.8 Hancock & Co Grand Pale Ale average carbonation, bitter, long finish, light sweetness, very bitter, toast, I loved the malty , hoppy bitterness & aftertaste ,a real cracker I really enjoyed this . 3.8 Hancock & Co Grand Pale Ale I was also surprised by the not so pale appearance of this pale ale, and the head was rather healthy looking too. There is a definite nuttiness and strong zesty hop taste going on. Pours a good head and leaves a nice lacing down glass. I enjoyed the first bottle. Will now open another. 3.6 Hancock & Co Bismark Brown Ale Again, I refer to the label and I would like to point out the accuracy of the description of the flavours apparent in this beer. I doubt that I could describe this any better because upon reading this, they leapt off the palate along with cinnamon and mace. I have very little criticism to offer this beer barring that it was maybe a little watery toward the finish, but I sincerely hope that this beer is embraced by the public. Not just because of my soft spot for Brown Ale, but because it is a genuinely good sessionable beer. Good nuttiness seems the lingering flavour and who doesn’t like a mouthful of nuts? Sorry. 3.7 Hancock & Co Grand Pale Ale So, thinks I, another pale ale. I suppose it’ll be as pale as it can be just to satisfy the requirements of it actually being beer, with a fart of carbonation and a healthy sprinkling of bugger-all. Hmm, thinks I again. It seems darker than I expected. There’s real colour, like a golden, caramel colour with a white head that leaves some lace down the sides. The aroma brought a surprise of good resinous hops, apricot tart, sour burnt caramel and maybe a faint nutty woodiness. And it’s flavourful too. A healthy dose of astringent bitterness, like taking a bite out of a green pinecone (not that I recommend such a thing). Not a pale ale for the faint of heart. A caveat that actually serves as a recommendation. Friday, November 30, 2012
