3.1 Schipper's Funkwit On tap at Vultures Lane. Lemon, bread, little tartness, saison spice. Easy drinking but a bit boring at the same time. Thursday, January 5, 2017

3.5 Schipper's Chinook Black IPA On tap at OGH. Aroma is chocolate, a little coffee and some woodiness. Flavour is bitter dark chocolate and roasted nuts. Quite thick and buttery. Not bad. I’d put it as an India stout rather than a black IPA, but I like those too! Friday, October 28, 2016

3.2 Schipper's Maverick IPA On tap at Brewers Cooperative. Crisp hops, both in taste and aroma. Some tropical fruit, grass and pine from the hops and some biscuit too. Very little sweetness. Tuesday, September 6, 2016

3.4 Schipper's Maverick IPA A crisp malt forward ipa. Pale east and extremely drinkable. Maybe biased as all I?ve had are American IPA for weeks but it?s nice to have one so crisp. Tuesday, September 6, 2016

3.6 Schipper's Chinook Black IPA Restrained tropical fruit aroma in jet black pour. Expected hop forward balance with just a hint of chocolate and licorice before a clean bitter finish. Friday, July 1, 2016

3.1 Schipper's Chinook IPA Quite a singular taste, and that taste is hard to define. Resin dominates, but it would benefit from a few other notes. A touch sweet and malty for my tastes Thursday, February 18, 2016

3.5 Schipper's Chinook Black IPA It is undoubtedly a pretty beer, dark deep, with a vigorous much head that leaves lacing to be envied. The aroma is of hops the last is much darker and deeper than that, the bitterness is star but not loud and the finish is just a hint of dry and isn’t at all arid or difficult. I’m led to understand this is of lower ABV now at 5.6 than the 7, and this might also be a good thing. Friday, January 8, 2016

3.6 Schipper's Chinook Black IPA Draft pours dark brown with a lasting tan head. Roasty chocolate aroma with a touch of earthy citrus hops. The flavor is rich, dark chocolate, espresso, and a medium bitter finish. Fuller body with average carbonation. A nice beer. Friday, October 9, 2015

3.5 Schipper's Hopricot Restrained aroma in a copper pour. Impressive fruity (apricot) taste a sustained influence on both the body and finish. Makes for an interesting brew - one I’d be happy to have as a red IPA. Saturday, September 5, 2015

3.6 Schipper's Hopricot Taste is apricot, dark and tangy and sweet berries, a bit of citrus pith, half a tad of a touch of onion, some wood then back to apricot, and peach stones. A very enjoyable ale. Friday, September 4, 2015

3.5 Schipper's Maverick IPA More earthy than typical tropical NZ hops. Combined with a slight brown sugar sweetness from the malt conspires a slight cured meat aroma. For me, there was slightly more malt than hop. A good well made beer but quite lacking in my be-loved cat piss and dank. Thursday, March 19, 2015

2.8 Schipper's Mistress Pilsner I’m at a loss as to why this is such a disappointment. The aroma seemed ok, The mouthfeel seemed ok, the lingering almost to dry and pepper lingers, and it’s plenty sweet and comfortable. But that’s all there is. I wanted more of that harsh bite, didn’t get it. As I drank more the lingering mouthfeel became a little unpleasing too. I’m not sure I’ve got this right, and I’m sure the beer is better than this. 3.6 Schipper's Maverick IPA Another solid brew from Schippers. Enticing aroma is backed up by a nicely balanced body that is a little maltier than expected. No foul though - makes for a nice change from the usual is all. Wednesday, June 18, 2014

3.6 Schipper's Herr X Vienna Lager What a crackingly good beer that is very quaffable and enjoyable. For the most part. It’s got great colour and great head and lacing. There is an unexpected sweetness in the palate and a decent finish. Although there is an unusual plastic over note to this, it’s not that distracting. It’s not hard to be enthusiastic about this as a beer and although a bit rough around the edges is a bit of a gem Friday, May 9, 2014

3.5 Schipper's Herr X Vienna Lager I am always delighted to see a Vienna Lager on the market here in New Zealand. Firstly because it is preservation of a historical style and is justifiably worthy. Secondly because on its own merits, it goes beyond the realm of ordinary lagers with its classic biscuity malt and slightly darker colour. This one has an excellent amber body, consistent creamy white head and good sparkle. Its aroma is mainly herbal and has undertones of cherries, malt and pie crust. The flavour is tangy with oranges and some black cherry again. It is rather more bitter than I was expecting and if being faithful to style is your thing you’ll mark it down. At face value this beer is just calling out for a quiet afternoon session in a pub somewhere with a game of darts while you ignore the sport on the television. Seconds? Absolutely. Awards? Maybe. It has an absence of faults but may just edge itself outside of classic Vienna Lager styling. Monday, March 31, 2014

3.8 Schipper's Maverick IPA This beer reminds me of how lucky we are in this country to have so many brewers of quality putting out excellent product. I encountered this beer at the Great New Zealand Beer Festival just metres from the excellent Raindogs Deadwood IPA and they were very much birds of a feather. Deep amber colour and a good nose of spruce cones, resin and malty amber. Tasting it was like shaking a tree and having all the preceding aromas fall out. A big body, resinous, massively bitter and immensely gratifying. This is a big hitting beer and if we are assembling an NZIPA style, then it has to be a worthy member of that group. 3.6 Schipper's Scallywag (Bottle) Very good beer. Pours nice amber colour with thick white-light brown head. Caramely and light earthy aroma with little bit of dryed fruit. Taste is lesantly hoppy bitter with sweet undertones. Very nice long bitter finish and you cen still recognize the hops. Medium body high carbonation. Tuesday, February 11, 2014

2.8 Schipper's Herr X Vienna Lager Nutty, estery, fruity amber and brown malt aroma. Caramel cola and sweet almond flavoring. Fusels possibly. Metal flakes, tea, cinnamon? Sweet, medium-low bitterness, syrup and rough and minerally texture, flabby, low acid, peaked finish. I had better experiences with Schipper’s other products but also had inconsistent bottles. This one seems unfinished. Thursday, January 23, 2014

3.9 Schipper's Scallywag Undated bottle. Rich ruby-amber body with faint haze and a soft white head. Hoppy aroma is cherries, cedar shavings, spice mix, herbs, cinnamon candy / twizzlers, pastry dough, marzipan and gelatin candies. Savory texture, medium-full body, semi-sweet flavor with bitterness well-suited. It’s certainly a "fruity" beer but it’s not overly sweet which is what the nose suggests. Instead it’s rich, savory and soft... prickly acids and fruity esters... the carared malt is perhaps the best use I’ve ever experienced... and the Maris Otter has that brined sweet cherry quality that I get in some English ale. Stellar beer once again from Schipper’s, everything works, it seems very deliberate, even four hop strains, including one I’m learning to dislike (Motueka), everything works. 4 Schipper's Boffin Bottle best by June 2014. Lightly hazed copper body with a creamy and fine off-white head (a rare NZ beer that looks swell and pours with a real head!). Lively bread crust and toffee Maris Otter malt with earthy and herbal English noble hops giving it a thyme, cinnamon and black pepper spiciness. Some calcium and granite shavings and mineral water come into play as well, it’s a rich aroma with more complexity than is found among it’s Kiwi counterparts, a joy to smell and taste. Dried apricot and red apple skin esters give it further depth, while the light body is divinely soft, carbonation natural and fine, and the finish leaves a spicy Fuggle damp earth / wet wood / moss / soil flavor coating the mouth. Bravo to Schipper’s once again. The Mistress Pilsner was exceptional the first time I had it, but a re-try shows some problems that seemed to be due to storage, it was purchased from a warm grocery store shelf. I didn’t like the Chinook IPA on tap and the bottle I had of it dropped and broke so I can’t say anything about tap versus bottle on that one. This bitter seems fresh, it’s superbly clean and flavorful and balanced and I think the pickiest English bitter enthusiasts would find something to like about it. Wednesday, January 1, 2014

3.3 Schipper's Chinook IPA Draft at Fork and Brewer in Wellington. Bronze body with small white head. Woody, nutty, "green" tasting (granny smith apples, cut grass, candy / jujube / gelatin notes). Syrupy texture, medium body, medium to heavy bitterness with crusty and toasty malt. Lemon scented laundry detergent off-notes and wet wood / moss grow as it opens. Low but creamy carbonation, malt has some coarseness. Not as rich in the aroma as their Mistress Pilsner, and sadly not as soft in the mouth either. I’m not a fan of Chinook so there’s little appeal for me, but it’s still a decent beer, well-made but not as pleasant as the Pils. Tuesday, December 31, 2013

3.7 Schipper's Mistress Pilsner A stunning and flavorful zwickelpils with Saphir-like lemon, cheese and musty hop character, very Old World in nature but certainly New World in execution. Exceptionally soft malt combined with a touch of yeast in the bottle gives it a creamy and velvety body with matching softness from low natural carbonation. Take the lemon and peppercorn spice of Spalt and the nectar / juiciness of Hallertau, amp them up a few decibels, combine with that cheesy / musty Saphir character and here we go... lemon pith, dried citrus, faint tropical gum touches with a strong pepperiness like Tettnanger on steroids. First impression was surprise, Wakatu and Pacifica hops, I’ve never had a clear taste of them until now, but by the end of the bottle I’ve fallen in love. No resin, no Christmas tree, no onion, diesel, cat pee or vegetable root, these are the Kiwi hops that need more attention, and this brewer, only two years in business, has certainly got my attention. First 4.0-level beer of the New Zealand trip and I would be happy to drink nothing but this for the rest of my time here. Re-rate: first bottle at home has noticeable diacetyl, very yeasty, cooked / over-kilned grains and corn kernels... I’m stumped. Friday, December 27, 2013

3.6 Schipper's Chinook IPA Nothing scary here move along. Nothing outstanding here either, move along. Except that for 7.3% ABV you’d never guess it because that’s well hidden. Nice pine, lots of mouth flavour and residual taste, nothing overwhelming. More towards grass then pine. Decent enough to share with a group, or sit for a bit with. Thursday, December 5, 2013

3.8 Schipper's Chinook IPA You didn’t choose an easy category did you? So many raters whose impression of IPA is Pacific NW and dominated by hops that begin with the letter C. My initial impression is that that this hasn’t been done badly though with a strong scent of amber resin, herbal grassiness and spruce cones. It seems a check in all the major boxes so far then. With regard to appearance it is reddish orange in colour with a suggestion that some head was once there. It is generously flavoured in the mouth with those aromas to the fore along with plentiful tangy malts, apricot and peaches in syrup and a nice pinch of bitterness. It isn’t over-the-top US-IPA, but I would stand in a queue for another... something I wouldn’t do voluntarily for other beers, believe me. Yes, this beer is well liked by me. Well liked indeed.
