3.5 Hayes' Clíodhna The Goddess Pours a rather pale yellow, with smallish head. Aroma of apples, some malt and yeast. Flavor was very apply--tasted more like a cider than a beer, actually. Not bad, but not really what I'd expect in an apple ale. Sunday, May 12, 2019

3.6 Hayes' AN TRÍONÓIDE Pours a very hazy, pineapple-orange, with mid-sized cap of white, frothy head that lasts. Aroma is very fruity--tropical and citrus fruits as expected. Flavor is a bit more on the bitter side than the best NE-style IPAs. Not as smooth or sweet as it could be. It has some tropical and citrus notes, but a lot of the pine-spruce hop bitterness in the forefront. Not a bad attempt at the style, but could use some work. Sunday, May 12, 2019

3.3 Hayes' Eye of Balor with Oak Chips, Cocoa Nibs and Raspberries ABR 2016. Black beer. The oak chips have Jefferson bourbon. Surprisingly thick foam on top. Lots of bourbon in the aroma. Even though I am not crazy about the bourbon flavor, but I do like the raspberry which is in the flavor. No significant chocolate which seems hidden by the heavily roasted malt. 2.9 Hayes' Eye of Balor with Oak Chips, Cocoa Nibs and Raspberries Cask @ ABR 2016. Listed as Eye of Balor aged in Jefferson’s Bourbon barrels with cocoa nibs and raspberries. Brown pour with a tiny off-white head. Nose is sort of messy. Dark chocolate and ashy char. Some mild herbal notes. Woody heat. Flavor is similar. Pretty hot barrel character. Dark chocolate. Rich and oily. Raspberry presence is pretty minimal to non-existent. Full body, flabby. Not ideal. Sunday, September 18, 2016

2.5 Hayes' Old Sour Jack ABR 2016. It sounds really good on paper, but something didn’t work out here. Light red color. Some berry in the aroma. Unfortunately the flavor did not turn out so well. Not very sour at all, and after reading the description, I am thinking it might need some more time in the barrel. Sunday, September 18, 2016

3.4 Hayes' Dullahan Coffee Porter There’s a very good coffee nose here, really reminiscent of fresh liquid coffee (not grounds or extract). The flavor is much more crass, however, and it couldn’t soothe my palate. Sharp edge. Uneven. (at 2015 Summer Beer Dabbler, St. Paul, MN) Monday, August 31, 2015

3.6 Hayes' The Morrigan Black IPA 5 oz. pour, on tap at the brewery’s taproom in Buffalo, Minnesota. Consumed on 6-5-15. Pours a nice shade of dark mahogany brown. Dark amber hue. Very little, beige head. More head would have earned the beer a 4 for appearance. Coffee and pine tanginess in the smell. Flavor matches the aroma but with more depth. Very nice, charry, almost tarry finish and aftertaste. Long, roasted bitter aftertaste that I like a lot. Quite tasty flavor. Pretty good aroma but even better flavor, whereas more often the opposite is the case. Some grapefruit and lemon citrus. Nice, likable beer with some substance. Medium body. Smooth in the palate. A touch less carbonated than I would prefer. Overall, this is a pretty darn good beer. It’s not amazing but more than adequate. Sunday, June 7, 2015

3.5 Hayes' McLearen's Session IPA 5 oz. pour, on tap at the brewery’s taproom in Buffalo, Minnesota. Consumed on 6-5-15. Pours a clear amber, dark in color for the style. Liquid looks good. Shiny. Small amount of beige head. Clean, piney, dry, bitter aroma. Whole wheat biscuit scent. Smells good. Interesting, dry, bitter flavor. Cracker-like, dry taste. There is an element of well-done hamburger in the flavor. A touch of seaweed. This is an old-fashioned pale ale, whereas I was expecting a modern, perhaps tropical-fruity session IPA. Not bad at all though. Frankly, I miss beers like this. Light to medium body. Frothy in the palate. Easy to drink. Likable. Simple and not a lot going on, but I do rather enjoy it. I grant an extra point in the overall score for general likability and old-fashioned charm. This beer really does make the “Session IPA” category seem absurd. It’s clearly an American Pale Ale. 1.8 Hayes' Clíodhna The Goddess 5 oz. pour, on tap at the brewery’s taproom in Buffalo, Minnesota. Consumed on 6-5-15. Pours a clear, pale straw to yellow / light gold with a small amount of beige head. Yeasty, funky, cheesy aroma. Apple juice scent. I don’t like the smell. Looks, tastes, and smells more like cider than beer. Buttery, slightly cheese-like taste. Flavors of apple butter and sweet white wine. The flavor is okay but doesn’t do it for me. A bit of tartness. Light in body. Fizzy and aqueous in the palate. Not my bag. Sunday, June 7, 2015

3.3 Hayes' Clíodhna The Goddess Sampled at a festival. More apple flavor than I expected, and a light aroma of apple also, almost like a cider. Some yeast, making me wonder what might happen if this were to age for a few months. Thursday, February 19, 2015

3.5 Hayes' Daiker's Wee Heavy 5 oz. pour, on tap at the brewery’s taproom in Buffalo, MN. Consumed on 11-21-4. Pours a hazy dark amber to medium brown with a bit of copper glow and a small amount of creamy, taupe head. Looks good. Malty, woody, nutty, pleasant, hearty aroma features scents of prune, mocha, and licorice. Nice taste is simultaneously malty and dry. Caramel flavor with a mineral finish. Full body. Smooth with reasonable liveliness in the palate. It is not difficult to imbibe, and that quality puts it above many other wee heavies in palate effects. This is a solid beer, though it is an a style that is far from my favorite. Tuesday, November 25, 2014

3.5 Hayes' Imperial IPA 5 oz. pour consumed as part of a six-beer flight, on tap at the brewery’s taproom. Strong scents of peach, apricot, grapefruit, and pine. I bit of armpit pungency in the smell, but only in a half-bad way. Pours a clear copper gold with a slight haze (though mostly clear) and a small amount of off-white head. Peach and apricot flavors. Also a nice caramel maltiness. A bit too sweet to be ideal for a Double IPA, but tasty nonetheless. Dry finish. Lightly dry aftertaste. Medium to full body. Smooth in the palate. Nice mouthfeel. Substantial yet drinkable. Overall, this was my favorite beer of the flight, narrowly edging out Hayes’ O’Ruaidhri Irish Red Ale. That said, this Double IPA probably counts as a below average entry in the highly competitive style. Saturday, May 3, 2014

2.5 Hayes' Green Kilt IPA 5 oz. pour consumed as part of a six-beer flight, on tap at the brewery’s taproom. Very bready smell is yeasty and dry. Scents of peach and sawdust. These are not my favorite smells, but they are interesting. Pours a hazy orange-ish tan that produces a nice glow in the sunlight. Small amount of nearly white / light beige head. Fruity, tart, and sweet flavor features caramel and peach elements. The taste grows on me after multiple sips, although I can’t say I like it that much. It does not taste like an IPA but rather more like a Scotch Ale or an English Strong Ale. I eventually get that the brewer is going for resin-y, but it comes across more as syrup-y. Medium body. Not particularly lively. Smooth and oily in the palate. This is a subpar IPA, and it was my least favorite of my flight. Saturday, May 3, 2014

3.2 Hayes' Sergeant Stella's Pale Ale 5 oz. pour consumed as part of a six-beer flight, on tap at the brewery’s taproom. Labeled as "Hayes Sgt. Stella’s Pale Ale." Weak aroma features a lightly dry hoppiness. Cracker scent. Floral fruitiness develops upon multiple sniffs. Pours a deep gold/brass with slight haze and nearly white head. Interesing, spicy, juicy, floral flavor features elements of cinnamon, cumin, apricot, cracker, and whole wheat bread. Light to medium body. Soft in the palate. Easy to drink. 3.4 Hayes' O'Ruaidhri Irish Red Ale 5 oz. pour consumed as part of a six-beer flight, on tap at the brewery’s taproom. Labeled as "Hayes’ O’Ruaidhri’s Irish Red Ale." Pours a hazy medium brown with an orange hue and beige head. Interesting appearance. Fruity aroma features caramel and vanilla. At first I considered the smell weak but inoffensive. When I returned to the beer later, I got a strong aroma that reminded me of a baked fruit tart. Nice, enjoyable, subtle, malty, fruity flavor features elements of peach, muffin, and bread. Medium body. Smooth in the palate. Pretty good liveliness. Overall, a fun and likable beer, and one of the best of my flight (along with Hayes’ Imperial IPA). I’m surprised because I’m normally not much of an Irish Ale fan, but, what can I say, it’s a standout. One of the bartenders said that it has been their best seller so far. Saturday, May 3, 2014

3.2 Hayes' Irish Stout 5 oz. pour, on nitro, consumed as part of a six-beer flight, on tap at the brewery’s taproom. Pours nearly black with a small amount of creamy taupe head. Has that typical nitro look and does look good; it’s what you want a nitro stout to look like. Coffee and char in the aroma. Smells like a burnt toasted bagel. Flavors of cigarette tobacco, char, and tar. Mineral-y. Metallic and lemony finish. I like the flavor aside from the metallic aspect. Thin body with nitrogen smoothness. I like the smoothness; I don’t like the watery quality. Overall, this is a pretty well done example of a style I don’t particularly like. Saturday, May 3, 2014

3 Hayes' Hillbilly Peach Picker 5 oz. pour, on nitro, consumed as part of a six-beer flight, on tap at the brewery’s taproom. Listed as 6.6% ABV. Pours a clear brass with a small amount of creamy white head, typical of a nitrogenated beer. Produces good, even, nitro lacing. Looks good. Weak aroma features peach or apricot and is a bit "beery" (i.e., like that of a typical macro pale lager). Cracker and cardboard in the smell. Taste is also a bit beery, but it has nice peach and honey flavors. Nice juiciness to the flavor. Smooth, creamy texture, as is typical of a nitro. Medium body. Saturday, May 3, 2014
