Brasserie Blondel Reviews

La Lubie Blonde
The blonde one in this series, brewed in the heart of France – again thanks to Anouschka and Goedele. Egg-white, moussy, medium sized, plaster-like lacing head, clear pale yellow golden robe, misty with sediment. Aroma of banana peel, ripe pear, meringue, candyfloss, honey, red apple, soggy white bread, whiff of iron. Sweet with dominant isoamylacetate (banana), some ripe pear and canned pineapple, minerally notes from sharpish carbonation (but not too much for style); smooth cereally and bit doughy pale malt sweetness with honeyish residual sugars on top, light iron aspect beyond that, after which a vague floral hop note ensues, offering way too little bitterness to counter the overall sweetness of this brew. Bubblegummy banana ester dominates from onset to finish. Very one-sided, overly sweet, thinly structured Belgian style blonde – but in any case better than the wit and the IPA I had from the same brand…

La Lubie Blanche
Witbier or indeed, in French, ‘blanche’ from this brewery in central France, thanks to Anoushka and Goedele for sharing. Moussy, off-white, loosely knit and quickly dissolving ‘head’ leaving nothing but some bubbles at the edges after a brief while; initially clear yellow blonde robe with greenish tinge, hazy with sediment. Aroma of banana peel, green raw cereals, oxidized apple slices, apricot jam, pear, honey, sourdough, wet straw, sweaty hint. Sweet onset, lots of banana ester, pear, pineapple and a pronounced flavour of (oxidized) apple, next to a sourish gooseberry-like aspect and even a hint of green kiwi; softish carb, thin and slick body, some wheat smoothness and sourness for sure but otherwise very simply and thinly grainy, with that dull sourishness continuing (infection?). Nots of old potato and straw ensue, but eventually an annoying residual sugary sweetness gets the upper hand, with banana and lemon peel fruitiness lingering on. My second beer from this brewery and although many of the French regions come up increasingly with skilled breweries, this clearly is not one of them: this beer does not even taste like a proper witbier (it lacks the spicing, for one), and worse, is insufficiently fermented and sweet, very feebly structured a thin mouthfeel even at this strength, and highly unbalanced. We have one of these La Lubies left to taste but after that earthy IPA and this sweet and thin wit, I cannot say I am looking forward to it very much.

La Lubie India Pale Ale
One of a series of beers made by Brasserie Blondel right in the heart of France; from a 75 cl bottle, thanks to Anoushka (and my girlfriend for sharing). Gusher, but manageable if opened very slowly and cautiously. Eggshell-white, moussy, plaster-like lacing, irregular and opening ‘gusher head’, misty deep yellow-golden robe, bit ochre-tinged. Aroma of old bread crust, dried dandelion, grass, young mugwort leaf, dried out grapefruit zest, iron, banana peel, raw button mushroom, moist white pepper, strawbales, juniper berry. Dryish onset, some restrained yeasty fruitiness (banana peel, green pear, unripe apricot), medium carbonated with soft, bit ‘fluffy’ but also somewhat thin mouthfeel; grainy and white-bready pale maltiness, simple, with growing yeasty breadiness and clove-like spicy phenols, along with leafy, grassy and somewhat rooty, long-lasting hop bitterness, all combined in a long earthy bitter finish. Very basic for an IPA, with enough yeastiness to qualify as a very mediocre Belgian style one; needs cleaning up, a more elaborate malt profile and, more than anything, a much more bright and aromatic New World hoppiness. More an earthy, yeasty, hoppy Belgian blonde of sorts…

Acheté dans un magasin de produits locaux prés de Montluçon. Ambrée sympathique avec un gout de fruits trop murs, caramel, épices. Pas assez marqué au niveau gustative pour une ambrée mais se laisse boire

La Lubie India Pale Ale
75cl bottle shared at our holiday home in France. Hazy yellow with a medium white soapy head. Light to medium body with moderate carbonation. Subtle bitter and sweet tones. Citrus, grain, malts and caramel. A refreshing French brew, not too IPA-ish though.

La Lubie Triple
Une robe ambrée, avec un mousse légère et agréable. Cette triple présente peu d’arôme en bouche, mais on sent sa consistance et sa légère amertume. Bière avec de belles bulles.
