On tap at Brisbane Airport. Golden bronze beer with solid white head. A few bubbles ascend. Mild malty nose. Zingy, malty, not bad. Finish has a touch of dry grain and very slight bitterness. Very similar to Carlton Pale Ale.

On tap at RSL. Sweet grassy aroma. Caramel colour. Some caramel malt sweetness. Very sweet. Honey flavour. Second review of this beer nowhere near as good as first.

Mild fruity aroma. Pours a dark golden yellow with thing white head. Taste is not overly pale, seems mostly driven by malt. some bitterness however. Not the ’palest’ ale, but also not the worst.

Yatala Brewery Sun Chaser Lager
BB 31 May 14. Poured a clear golden amber colour with a 5mm white bubbly head that diminished quickly to a very thin collar. Laced poorly as spots. Carbonation very low and coarse. Aroma slight of wet cardboard. Tastes bland with no bitterness - a sweetish water with no fizz. Light body, very watery. Thin with a nothing finish. Very poor.

Yatala Brewery Sun Chaser Lager
(Bottle) Clear yellow / pale amber, no head. Aroma of damp cardboard with a hint of cabbage. Thin palate with coarse, soda like, carbonation. Thin watery flavour; a bit of sugar and a slight citrus tang in the finish. It’s sort of like soda water with some sugar, maybe a hint of light malt and a pinch of citric acid. It doesn’t actually taste awful, but as a beer it is awfully disappointing. Verdict: avoid unless desperate.

Bottle - pours pale yellow, fizzes up in the glass then settles to no head. Not much of an aroma, of what there is smells a lot like dextrose in homebrewing, with some cardboard. No flavour, very watery.

Did not know they mage this. Found randomly on a lower shelf in a FNQ bottle shop. Corn, lurid yellow, very low carbonation and put me to sleep on a hot FNQ day.

Poured a light golden amber with a three-finger white foamy head that collapsed more than diminished. Laced poorly. Moderate carbonation. Aroma of malt with a strange slightly metallic tint. Taste bit bland up front but has a nice hops bitter after taste. Light (watery) body (3% ABV). Finish is pretty bland with a hint of bitterness.

375ml can. Blast from the past. This beer has been resurrected from the 80’s. I was too young to try it then but could not pass up the chance to try it now. Clear and amber in colour with a soapy white head. Mostly grassy aromas. The flavour is a bit harsh with some metallic flavours. Some things are best left in the past.

375ml can. Wow now hear’s blast from the past. This beer was around in the late 70’s & early 80’s & was often referred to as "Brisbane River". They have gone all retro and released a new version of the original beer, which I never got too try as I was too young. Golden amber in color with lots of grass and grain aromas. Big white head that stays for a while. In the mouth it is quite light with not a lot in the flavour department.

This used to be a great beer produced by an independent brewery in competition with the big brewers. Carlton United Breweries (Fosters) took them over and gradually denatured the brew until nobody wanted to drink it, which gave them the pretext to axe the brand. (Typical big brewery tactic). I have not seen this beer on sale here for a couple of years. Fosters still have rights to the Powers name and put out a feeble Powers Gold at Holiday times as a cheap ’opportunistic’ special.

In Australia it is common for breweries to run a special batch of beer to be sold on special, packed in 30-can ’blocks’ and sold quite cheaply compared to the normal can or bottle 24 ’slabs’ as they are known here. Powers Gold is only ever sold as a 30-can block and tends to be issued at major selling times like Christmas or Easter. It is usually very cheap indeed, less than $AUD 1 per can and tastes like it. Originally it was 3.5% ABV but has been watered down to 3% recently.

In the can. Pours pale gold with a medium-sized fluffy white head. Smells like a cross between apple juice and urine. Mild residual bitter finish. Weak and watery. Not sure that this has any sugar-donating adjuncts as it only reaches 3% ABV. Boiled vegetable flavors abount. Yuck.

Is there a scarier phrase in the Australian brewing world than the one on the label of this beer: "Queensland brewed"? The Sunshine State has a great deal going for it, but the beer... Ah well. Despite the name, this is another pale gold lager. The aroma has that wonderful Pride of Ringwood metallic ring with some wet grass and butter. Typical CUB lager burp-inducing soda-water carbonation. A hint of honey and peachy fruitiness in the mid-palate before the curse of POR washes it all away in a metallic finish. (375ml bottle)

One of six from the "Beer down under" six pack brought back from Australia. This offering from Carlton pours a pale yellow with a thin white lace. There is a metallic pale hop presence, the carbonation is high it almost burns the throat. There is a small bitter grapefruit quality in the finish but overall it is really weak.

Can. My Uncle Don brought this one over from Sydney in a pack of 6 different Aussie beers. Can says that it’s good until April 06. OK. I didn’t get to try this one in Australia, so here we go. Pours with a fluffy head, and that head leaves quickly, but surprisingly leaves some decent lace. Golden color, a little darker than I anticipated. Nose is like a lot of domestic macros, but not unpleasant, just corn and hops. I glanced at the can and .... what?.... 3 percent?.... Is this near beer for Aussies? Lots of flavor from the hops when I take a slurp. Pride of Ringwood hops I’m guessing because it tastes a lot like the other Australian lagers that I have had. Not bad. Highly carbonated. I think that I could easily drink 15 of these. Pretty tasty actually.

Damn, bugger and all those really bad words. I looked at the ratings of some of my colleagues and I noticed I hadn’t rated this. So, being in close proximity to the Australian Hotel in the Rocks I wander in and find, to my dismay, that this was available. Yup, typical Queensland description of a mid strength beer with all that such a style promises. Too grainy, corny adjuncty to be a real light and not enough guts to be a heavy. These beers are a bit like a transvestite, they technically have balls but they just can’t use them to any real extent. And they certainly are trying to be something they aren’t.

A lot of Aussie mainstream mid-strength beers have gold in their title, maybe to fool the unwary that they are buying a premium beer. This one is trying to fool you as well! Metallic tasting, corn aroma and the colour looks artificial. Still I could drink it.

Big, fat, toffee, earthy crystal malt aroma with diacetyl and mushrooms. Quite interesting. Crystal malt flavour isn’t so dominant but it’s there, light acidity and metallic bitterness. A bit watery, some pineapple. It’s actually not that far off a real bitter, which is a bit of a surprise.

At the CUB brewery tour. Has a level of that typical CUB grass-metal-vomit type funk that is unrivalled by any CUB product with the possible exception of Carlton Cold. Otherwise crap too. No good.

Pale gold, coarse carbonation to form a thin head which drops to nothing within a minute. Carbonation finished in a similar time. Pleasenet, sweet malt/honey aroma, but not well balanced. thin body, drying with a harsh metallic bitterness, and still a notable sweetness. Sounds like it should be nicely balanced but somehow misses out.

A bit like Virgin Blue. It started with a bang and a promise to be a real challenger to the big boys. In the end it became just another mass produced piece of dross that failed to deliver. I bought this on an Impulse Ansett it on the table. After drinking it I was let down. Did I Com.....pass.

Corny, sugar sweet start, kind of bland, corny, fizzy, adjuncty with a bitter finish, well, its suprisingly drinkable and, for a midstrength (3.6%ABV) has more flavour than a lot of full strenghts, still pretty crap though.
