Shimono Loco Pilsner (Sakura Hojun Bakushu)
Draught at the Great Japan Beer Festival, Osaka, 2011. A little thin in color, not much aroma, just a bit of malt. Malty, fruity flavor. Not much going on. A rather boring, un-hoppy lager.

Shimono Loco Kolsch (Sakura Kaori no Nama)
Bottle, branded Kaori no Nama (Sakura Netherland Windmill) at BarBar, Tokyo. Pours clear golden with a decent head. Moderate fruity nose followed by banana and citrussy fruit flavours. Still retains good dryness towards the finish. Highly drinkable.

Shimono Loco Kolsch (Sakura Kaori no Nama)
Draught at Q-Brick. Pale yellow, with a quickly fading head. Biscuity, grainy aroma, clean and malty. Very fruity, sweet flavor, with candy or gum balls. Not terrible, but not very great, and nothing like a real kolsch. Nicely smooth with a light body. This is the best I’ve found this beer. It is often worse.

Shimono Loco Coconut Draught
From the handpump at Beer Belly. This is a dark lager with coconut flavoring of some kind. Nearly black with tints of red. Aroma of chocolate cookies and almost no coconut. Big, oily coconut flavor, though, with chocolate and a touch of coffee. Dry enough, and not too sweet, with ok bitterness at the finish, though the coconut flavor is slightly fake.

Shimono Loco Divine Vamp VI
Cask at the Tokyo Real Ale Festival 2009. Really complex, fruity, caramel malt. Light but complex. Very well hopped, excellently done. Not heavy in the mouth at all.

Shimono Loco Divine Vamp VI
Draught at Popeye, Tokyo. Clear amber, minimal head. Fairly sweet with nothing but lots of caramel. Medium bodied with fairly hard mouthfeel. Low on hops, huge on caramel and with clean almost sterile flavour profile. Not my favourite at Popeye.

Shimono Loco Porter
Draught at Eni-bru, Osaka (as Coconut Porter). Dark brown, no head. Coconut aroma. Sweetish with clean mouthfeel. Medium bodied with lots of coconut and vanilla on the surface, not a whole lot underneath. Quite low bitterness. A bit too sharp and superficial.

I didn’t find anything too complex with this. A simple ale, with a minimal finish. Ok beer but wouldn’t reach for it again

On tap at Popeye. Copper with a small head. Hoppy aroma. Strong citrussy hops flavours with grapefruit and especially lemongrass. Hints of buttery toffee. Quite complex.

Shimono Loco Porter
This was the Coconut Porter, draught at Qbricks fruit beer day, May 2008. Black. Big coconut aroma, like suntan lotion. Rather sweet. Lots of coconut in the mouth, and not much else. Some sweet vanilla. Slightly bitter finish with coffee and coconuts. There is enough bitterness to give good balance. Much better than expected.

Shimono Loco Porter
Deep brown color with a nice beige head. Aroma is malty, chocolate, strong toasted coconut, light roasted malts. Smooth, creamy mouth. Flavor is strong coconut, toasted malts, milk chocolate, and slight molasses. Stornger coconut flavor than your average coconut porter and that really makes this one stand out from the crowd. I could session this one all night.

Shimono Loco Porter
Brown in colour with an amazing nose of rice, rum, chocolate and coconuts. Flavour surprised me...way more coconut-y than I weas imagining. Great! Displays a fine sense of balance as well as pushing the envelope (after all, Coconut Porters aren’t really a household name). Finish was kind of weak and left a dry feeling in my mouth, but overall this was an impressive beer...milky, delicious, and very refreshing...almost surprisingly so. Would love to have this on tap.

Shimono Loco Beer Sakura Steam
Light amber color. Slightly tart with a hint of oranges and apples in the nose. Light bodied and well balanced. Very carbonated. Lacks aftertastes, but no real faults. If Steve was aiming for an Anchor Steam clone in his homebrew recipe, he certainly proved spot on.

Shimono Loco Porter
This is actually a coconuts porter. Dark brown color, coconuts and whisky jump out of the nose. Sweet milk chocolately mouth, slight sour, chocolate coconuts finish.

Shimono Loco Kolsch (Sakura Kaori no Nama)
Tap at the 2005 Tokyo beer festival. Pale, golden, minimal effervescence. Minimal aroma to speak of. Honestly, the only thing between this and water was a little bit of grain. But they sure made up for it with the porter!

Shimono Loco Porter
Cask, at Tokyo beer festival 2005. This was the big winner of the festival among the ones I had, by a landslide! First of all, I was surprised to see anything on cask here. Second, this was phenomenally good!! Dark brown, and the head dissipated a little bit quickly for a cask beer (it was one of the last pours from the cask, not sure if this would affect things). Amazingly complex aroma: milk chocolate, brandy, rich coffee. Fine chocolate flavor fading into whiskey, alcohol, coffee beans. Finish that stays with you. One of the best porters I’ve ever had - unfortunately when I went to get more they were out. The brewer told me that it was one of the first batches and that bottles would be available later this year - I can only hope they’re as good as this was.
