3 Wharfedale Executioner Sampled this bitter in the Bow Bar, Edinburgh September 2004. Cask, handpump dispense. Copper red in colour with a thin creamy white head. Roasted malt aroma leads into a decent silky mouthfeel. Decent lacing. Pale malt complexes give a smooth rich roasted malt flavour in the mouth. Smokey flavour continues on into the dry coffee like aftertaste with earthy loam flavour to the bitter hop resins.Finish is robust and malty with woodsmoke present in the mouth. A decent session bitter. Monday, March 12, 2012

3 Wharfedale Tether Cask conditioned at Whitelocks City & Luncheon Club. Gold with white head. Malty grainy beer with a baked bread character. A sharpish twang too. Not a favourite unfortunately. Wednesday, June 1, 2011

3.6 Wharfedale Folly IPA Cask (handpump) at The Duck & Drake, Leeds, October 2006. Amber colour. Bags of juicy, resinous aromatic hops on the nose. More like a traditional bitter on the palate with a more earthy, bitter feel although some resinous character persists. I suspect some US hop input. Firm, dry and bitter mouthfeel. Very drinkable. I had this noted down as 5.0% but other sources say 4.5%. Tasted more than 4.5% to me. Saturday, February 16, 2008

2.8 Wharfedale Executioner Dark, red-golden beer with practically no head. The mouthfeel is very flat, no carbonation. It’s a very sinister name, I hope to survive the experience ;) The aroma has notes of malt and fruit. The flavour is fruity with lots of roasted malt and a nice bitterness, but it’s slightly disharmonic. It’s drinkable, but not one that caught my interest! Sunday, September 2, 2007

3.2 Wharfedale Folly Ale Cask, GBBF 07. Gold with a thin off-white head. Hoppy with some oaky tones, toffee warmth. Mouth is hoppy and some malt, but pretty straightforward. Tuesday, August 14, 2007

3.4 Wharfedale Executioner Cask gravity at Kingston BF 2007. Very dark brown/chestnut, no head. It’s an odd old fashioned beer, some smooth yet powdery coffee, some spicy hop on finish. Decent enough and good complexity. A bit between a fruity brown ale and a porter, but with striking peppery hop. Certainly the most interesting beer so far. Saturday, July 7, 2007

3.3 Wharfedale Executioner Cask at Bar t’at, Ilkley, West Yorkshire. Though I deplore the awful pun in the name of the pub, it was a nice place, and I liked the beer too. Amber with a beige head. Malty aroma and full-bodied.sweet malt taste. Ashy bitterness in the finish. Wednesday, April 18, 2007

3.5 Wharfedale Executioner Cask (gravity) at the Bricklayers Arms Yorkshire Beer Festival, Putney, London. Mid brown colour with a reddish tinge. Nutty malt aroma with some bready elements. The dry malt continues on the palate, providing a solid backbone with plenty of balancing earthy hop flavours. Developing bitterness comes through on the finish to join the ever-present chewy malt. Quite a full, firm mouthfeel. Pretty decent stuff. Thursday, March 1, 2007

3.4 Wharfedale Executioner Cask, at GBBF 2005. Amber bronze, no head and low condition. Low chocolate and roasted barley in the nose, good sweet chocolate and roasted barley in the mouth and a gentle but lingering sweet chocolate note in the finish. Thursday, January 25, 2007

3.5 Wharfedale Van de Plas (VDP) Cask (gravity dispense) at London Drinker Beer Festival, March 2006. Amber colour. Slight haze. Something of a rarity - an English wheat beer that is actually recognisable as a wheat beer. And a pretty decent one at that. There’s plenty of estery fruit and soft spice with a firm underlying peppery hop bite that prevents it from getting flabby. In this case the marriage of cask and wheat succeeds rather well. 3.3 Wharfedale Van de Plas (VDP) Cask@London Drinker. Quite authetic i thought, but the cask character was obvious. Some yeasty banana and clovey spicyness, citric finish, quite nice in the end. Tuesday, May 2, 2006

2.1 Wharfedale Folly Gold Tasted 08/06/2005. 500ml pastuerised bottle from Rumble’s, Wellington. Pale gold. White head that disappears as quickly as it arrived. Average looking soapy lacing that is attributable to the beer, not the glass. Sweet perfumey malt aroma, verging on rotten vegetables and over-ripe fruit. Some faint, pleasant, orange zest notes. Flavour, which is again sweet and malt dominated, has little bitterness. Some grainy, nutty and vegetal flavours noted. Mouthfeel is smooth, bordering on flat, and weight is medium-light. Below average. Wednesday, June 8, 2005

3.1 Wharfedale Folly Ale Tasted 03/06/2005. 500ml bottle from Rumble’s, Wellington. Pours a bright orange-gold with a airy white head. Some toffee and candy-like malt sweetness on the nose, followed by citrus and hints of almond. Huge oily, citrus hops in the flavour and a good malt flavour for it’s low abv. Perhaps a touch overly bitter in the end, which is highlighted by some bitter pithiness on the palate. Medium mouthfeel. Pretty tasty. Monday, June 6, 2005

3.2 Wharfedale Folly Ale Beer number 4 in the Great Ayr/ Glasgow pub crawl. Cask from Scottish Tall Fount in Geordie’s Byre, Ayr. Tasty, refreshing bitter. Little bit nutty. Great pub, but Jane was the only (a) female (b) non smoking customer, so we scarpered quickly. Monday, May 16, 2005

2.7 Wharfedale Folly Gold [Cask at GBBF 2004] An orange beer with no head. The aroma is sweet yet sour as if it has been wild fermented. The flavor is sweet with primary notes of oranges - quite boring. Thursday, April 14, 2005

3.1 Wharfedale Executioner Bottled. A nutbrown beer with a small light brown head. The aroma is sweet hoppy with notes of nuts and bread. The flavor is sweet and primarily hoppy from a weird hop I can’t pinpoint, but also with notes of malt, nuts, and bread. Tuesday, March 8, 2005

3.1 Wharfedale Wot u Like Cask Conditioned, White Horse Hedgerley, gravity dispense, poured by me. Ok bitter, but overly roasty malt. I don’t like the roast flavours in a bitter, it doesn’t mix well with the hops. Saturday, June 5, 2004

4.2 Wharfedale Folly Ale Cask Conditioned, White Horse, Hedgerley, Bucks. Beer Festival (day before it starts proper); beer 1. Gravity Dispense. A tasty golden/bronze bitter with plenty of citric bitterness. While the decription might say that it is a traditonal yorkshire bitter, I feel that this probably lends itself more to the Southern style than the Northern style. Thursday, May 27, 2004

3 Wharfedale Folly Ale Bottle, Melton Ross Farm Shop. Amber bronze, thin white head and moderate condition.
